I have been privileged to coach with Alan and my life has been significantly better since I began a year ago. Through Alan's guidance I have been able to transform painful experiences into beautiful stepping stones. I have been able to find considerable peace as I have followed Alan's teachings. I have been so pleased with the results that I have had Alan coach my nine year old daughter through her struggles with losing her Dad. As a single mom, Alan has shown me effective parenting strategies and my relationship with my daughter continues to improve. I am forever grateful for the opportunities for growth and the wisdom and knowledge I have gained. It has been an amazing journey.

I recently completed Life Coach sessions with Amy and I found her very easy to talk to and felt that she was listening and actually hearing what I was saying. She prompted responses from me in the form of questions to get me thinking of how I could affect my own solutions while gently steering my toward some concrete advice. I feel she nailed it perfectly in my Vision Statement at the conclusion of our sessions and I will be listening and reading it over and over to keep myself on track. Thank you Amy Colgan-Niemeyer!

Dr. Kramer has been my life coach for 15+ years. He helped me through some very tough areas in my life, from my childhood abuse, being a teenager with a lot of issues, going into adulthood, becoming a mother at 20 with no partner, mairriage counseling then helping me to see that my marriage was explosive and unhealthy for not only myself but our children. Coaching through a very difficult divorce and currently he's helping me through a very difficult custody battle. Dr. Kramer has helped me through it all! He's coached me with career goals and changes, helping me set boundaries and reachable goals with my career and helping with pros and cons of a recent career change. Dr. Kramer has coached me through my depression and anxiety, creating excercises to use daily and since I've been using his techniques I've been able to sustain my relationships with people in my life where I'd normally shut them out. I've also been able to gain self confidence and feel valued in my personal and professional relationships. I highly recommend Dr. Kramer as a life coach and even have my 12 and 9 year old children seeing him and setting goals. I feel that you can never start too early and I know how much I have benefited from seeing Dr. Kramer, so of course I want that for my children as well.

I have had four amazing sessions with Margi. Before beginning our sessions, she asked a me few questions and made me feel very comfortable. Before hiring Margi I was soooo tired, suffer with, "failed back surgery", well this is what all the doctors tell me, and weight gain due to the all the medications that I was ingesting daily. Margi is VERY intuitive and COMPASSIONATE and taught me how to tune into my body and feed it wholesome, good food to create the energy I needed. The cooking lessons were so fun and she shared with me so many ideas and tools to create easy, satisfying meals. she shared with me so many ideas and tools to create easy, satisfying meals. She also did awesome, relaxing energy healing sessions on my back and recommended herbs to help with my back spasms or "episodes". Now I am feeling so much more flexible with a GREAT deal less pain! I'm very grateful to Margi for opening my eyes to how much my life, psyche and health are affected by the energy of what I eat. Her knowledgeable, professional and friendly manner has inspired me to continue the nutrition counseling to balance my weight, have more fun in her cooking classes and oh!... so, relax the back with her energy sessions!

There are many who describe themselves as coaches who are system coaches. In other words they have a script and a program and work to fit the client into the program. I coach the person. I work with who you are and where you are in life and assist you to move forward from that point, rather than where some system tells me to go with you. We work together. I don't give you assignments based on some script. We work together to create challenges for you based on where you are and where you desire to be. In the process you learn to accelerate your learning curve not by bypassing steps you would naturally go through one way or another. Rather by looking at your life under a microscope and seeing what beliefs and habits you have that hinder you from moving forward. By working from the inside out, looking at beliefs and driving forces from within you, rather than working from the outside in by having you change what you do, you create a connection to your own strengths and abilities from within, creating a greater possibility of lasting shifts in your life!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is a life coach?

A professional, accredited life coach works with people to help them make important changes in their life, either growing in their profession or changing gears in their personal lives. They help clients turn their dreams or wishes into realistic, attainable goals. They guide people through the process of making life changes by helping them evaluate the steps they must take to reach a particular goal, then help them decide how — and whether — to take those steps in the most efficient, effective and rewarding way possible. A life coach acts as a motivator, strategist and accountability partner. Unlike a therapist, a life coach doesn’t help solve problems from your past — they’re focused on helping you move forward with new ways of acting and thinking that will help you reach your goals. Some people specialize in particular types of life coaching, including life balancing coaches, small business coaches, executive coaches and personal finance coaches. Some meet clients in person, while others hold consultations over the phone.

Regardless of which type of life coach you’re interested in, make sure the person holds an International Coach Federation (ICF) credential. There are three tiers of credentials: Associate, Professional and Master, which require coaching experience ranging from 100 hours to 2,500 hours.

How much does a life coach cost?

A life coach helps clients set and reach professional and personal goals, develop positive habits, and deal with stress. Some people meet with a life coach once or twice, while others form an ongoing professional relationship, meeting regularly in person or on the phone. The average national cost to meet with a life coach ranges from $80 to $130 an hour. Some coaches offer per-session pricing, especially for one-time meetings; expect to pay an average of $100-$125. People who want to work with a coach over a period of time to explore life transitions, career growth or lifestyle changes may be able to get discounted pricing in a package. For example, three 60-minute sessions cost an average of $300, four 60-minute sessions cost an average of $350, and four 60- to 90-minute sessions plus unlimited contact between sessions cost an average of $400. Some specific types of coaching, such as relationship or marriage coaching, cost more than standard life coaching. For instance, three 60-minute relationship coaching sessions cost an average of $500, four 60-minute sessions cost an average of $550, and six 60- to 90-minute sessions cost an average of $650 when purchased as a package. Training and experience can also affect the cost of hiring a life coach. An Associate Certified Coach, who holds a certification that requires only 60 hours of training and 100 hours of coaching experience, will charge less than a Master Certified Coach, who typically has at least 200 hours of training and 2,500 hours of coaching experience.

      Why get a life coach?

People of all ages and in all careers have called in a life coach. Life coaches are accredited professionals who can help you figure out the tangible changes you can make in your life to reach your goals; they can even help you turn your dreams into goals, if you’re not sure where to go next. A life coach can also help people find their purpose in life. Life coaching clients often have an idea of what they want to do, such as help people or work with animals, but don’t know how to turn that passion into a career. A life coach can help clients work through the options to find a clear path with concrete steps that lead to an attainable goal. A life coach can also help clients make a major career change, such as starting a new business. Life coaches can help clients develop better habits that will make them more successful, acting as an accountability partner. Life coaches also often guide their clients through major transitions in life, such as a career change or other stressful situations that are made easier with guidance from a neutral third party.
