Sophie C. says, "I have been learning English for many years, and I consider myself a very advanced learner. I have a rich vocabulary and a deep sense of life in the United States. However, I still had difficulty expressing myself at the level of a native American speaker, especially when it came to my accent. During eight months in Prof. Alex’s American Accent program, I made incredible progress. The mechanical training of sounds, intonation, and accent patterns was very important and helped me understand how to position my tongue and produce the correct sounds. This technical part of the training built a strong foundation for my accent development. But what made this program truly unique was Prof. Alex’s knowledge of psychology and psycholinguistics. Whenever I felt that a sound was not good enough, or when I could not clearly hear or feel the difference, he guided me through reflection. He helped me understand how the sound felt from my perspective and how it should sound to the American ear. This reflective process helped me move forward and develop a deeper connection with the language. As a native Spanish speaker, I always felt that the culture of speaking Spanish is very different from the culture of speaking in an American accent. At times, I was even afraid that by developing my American accent, I might lose a part of my Spanish cultural identity. However, Prof. Alex helped me understand something very powerful: both cultures are important, and having both makes you a stronger and more complete person. This idea made me feel safe, secure, and confident during the entire program. Because of this approach, I did not only improve my accent — I also transformed the way I see myself as a speaker of English. Today I often receive compliments from people who say my accent sounds very natural and close to native. More importantly, I feel that the language truly belongs to me, and I feel comfortable expressing myself in American culture while still keeping my Spanish identity.
