Scott was great to work with. Unlike many people in the construction industry he’s prompt at returning calls and messages and is always accessible for questions or information. His work quality is fantastic and he really builds things to last. His extensive knowledge of all facets of construction enable him to approach every job request creatively and he’s able to solve even tricky projects effectively and efficiently. He keeps track of all receipts and supplies and is extremely transparent at all stages of the project. I hired him to hang a door for my new basement entry and was so impressed I went on to have him do the guardrails for the stairs with an entry roof to protect the entrance from the weather. He then built new stairs for the porch and and an awesome breezeway on the side of the garage to house my garbage cans and small tool storage shed. Big project or small, this guy can get it done. After seeing how much time he spent researching and picking up supplies and then enjoying a professional finished project I feel like I really got a lot of bang for my buck. Will I hire Scott again for my next difficult project? Definitely!!

Rick was amazing to work with! He replaced my exterior front and back doors, and being that it is such an old house, it turned out to be much more difficult than just switching out a door. He was extremely knowledgeable, and able to work through the problems and leave me with 2 beautifully installed doors. He was efficient, great with communication leading up to it, and very reasonably priced. I will definitely be using him again for future projects around the house.

Daniel is a great contractor! I had a cracked tub I was going to have him replace. Not only did he provide me with the bid, but he also suggested I patch it instead of replace it. He found someone who specialized in repairing tubs and even set up the appointment for me. By repairing the tub I saved hundreds of dollars and you can’t even tell it was damaged! Also, I mentioned I had some home repairs I wasn’t comfortable fixing myself (fixing a couple towels racks, installing a lock, fixing a glass door and installing a cage over a vent). Daniel was the right man for the job! Not only did he text me to confirm our appointment the day before, but he arrived on time equipped with all the tools to get the jobs done! He’s very professional, nice and did quality work! Oh and he even cleaned up after himself! Overall, I’ll be hiring Daniel again. He’s trustworthy and is very skilled. Thanks Daniel!!

Chris came over this evening to fix my bathtub faucet. He was extremely kind and knew exactly what needed to be done. He didn’t waste any time fixing the problem! Even though it was a late appointment for him, he showed up with a smile and an overall positive demeanor. I’ll definitely be using Cransten again for home repairs!

I used Crown Services Group to remodel a bathroom in one of my rental properties in Salt Lake City. I have never been more satisfied with not only the quality work but also the turn around time the project was completed. I had some new tenants coming in to occupy the unit within a few weeks and they were able to accommodate my needs in which I am truly grateful. I have used many home repair services in the past and I have never been more pleased as I have been with Crown Services Group. Check them out, you won't be disappointed.

"This is the third time I have had North American Construction work on my home. The first was when I had my roof replaced, the second when I had my bath enlarged, and modernized. It wasn't with simulated tile,or tile with all of it grout problems, but with a marble product that looks like I was in the Waldorf Astoria. The last was my antiquated kitchen. The foreman Angel, was instead, transformed a drab, outdated kitchen into a show place that my wife can't stop singing the praises about!!! And they were several thousands of dollars less than the fu-fu places, that had done my neighbors kitchen. I would recommend them to my best friend without reservations, and I cant wait till i have enough to get my windows later this fall."

It was a pleasure working with Justin. He was very thorough and made sure he got our shelves down to the exact size, type of wood and color that we wanted. The fact that he didn't charge us extra for supplies was a breath of fresh air. Most contractors will double your price simply from charging you more for supplies. But he didn't. He bought them at his cost and we just paid him for his time and hard work. We absolutely love our floating shelves that he created for our living room. It was exactly what we wanted and he got it done quicker than we thought too! We'll definitely be hiring him to do a few other projects in our house like creating the mud room and fixing a light in our kitchen.

Stefan was a great choice for what we needed by far! He was on time and brought everything for the job and more. We needed our king size (IKEA) bed frame disassembled, moved to a new location and reassembled , while disassembling we found there were some things that were broken prior to him coming and he happily found ways to strengthen and repair our bed, assembling it better than it was before. He did all this in a very short amount of time and at a great price at that! I will definitely be calling Stefan for any needed handyman work. Great service!

When we hired Jason at Building Pros, we only intended him to complete some drywall repairs we needed done in a rental unit. However, as additional needs arose, we soon discovered Jason to be skilled in many different areas and had him complete not only the drywall repair, but door frame replacement, baseboard removal and installation, window repair, hvac assessment, plumbing repairs and several other miscellaneous jobs we needed done. Jason and his team have been incredibly efficient and professional and we look forward to maintaining a long term working relationship with Building Pros.

We trust these guys. They gave me a ballpark estimate over the phone in no time and were in our home within a few hours, on a Friday night of all times. Unlike other contractors we've worked with, they seemed to understand the urgency of a home disaster when others were content to wait until the next week when they could "fit us in." They found the correct source of our water damage when another contractor was completely off in their theory. The service, expertise, and honesty was well appreciated and more than we could have hoped for.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
