The job was a total remodeling of a large townhouse(3600 sf), under limited time. It is in a popular ski area, and it was getting close to a new season opening. It needed to be finished before the snow fall. Therefore, it was hard to assemble a team of skilled professionals as they were in high demand to finish every project in town before the season would start. Brian and Jami (co-Ownwers of Blue Sky) took this hard task with an very professional attitude, created a team of very good and hard working sub-contractors, and achieved amazing job together. I lived out of state from the job site, and I had to fully rely on Blue Sky. Though, they kept me informed in every step of the remodel, communicated extensively by text, photos, email, and phone calls, which made me fully confident with theim. I, myself, am also a designer, and understood the time pressure and tough situation of logistics they had. The impressive thing was that they not only achieved the good construction but also paid very personal attention to every detail ,and cared about my benefit first throughout the project. They had a very positive attitude, and solved every usual and unusual problem that arised, very well and creatively. They had an amazing people skill, which was a big plus to have kept everyone involved going with a smile, and going out of his/her way to finish his/her part. I have a deep appreciation for their and their team's work and contribution. Project was done before the snow fall, came out beautifully beyond what I imagined. I highly recommend Blue Sky if you want creative professional who pays attention to detail, put your interest first, and make your life easier. They have certainly made my remote operation stress free. I would also like to add that they also offer property management and beyond. They have found me a very good renter and took care of all relating to the lease process. A very helpful, "one stop takes care of everything" company. They are flexible to your need to come up with solutions. On top of that, the new tenant was so impressed with their beautiful remodel work, so they hired them to decorate their new home, and manage their other properties.

North American Construction did a beautiful job on our kitchen remodel. The team was very nice. I had a small kitchen and needed so much more room. They suggested to build custom cabinets to free up more counter space room and it allowed me to open up the kitchen even more. Which I honestly thought couldn't happen in our little space. I love my new kitchen. This holiday season is not going to be as cramped as it has been. Thank you North American Construction.

Royal-T replaced a contractor I hired - and fired - to remodel penthouse condo I had recently purchased. First contractor misrepresented his capabilities and experience, and created a horrendous mess. Royal-T stepped in and transformed my penthouse property with care and quality. Owner Micah Chamberlain coordinated with building management/HOA with ease, and everyone was impressed. My project was greatly impacted by improper work by first contractor, and Royal-T rectified major problems. Carpentry is excellent. Total quality and professionalism by everyone associated with this project. I was comfortable with Royal-T personnel and they had keys to my property. Ten weeks from start to finish, including demolition of substantial fireplace separating two rooms (11,000 lbs. stone and debris hauled to dump!), new flooring (over 1,500 sq ft). New kitchen/bath, doors, recessed lights. Major ceiling and vent work. When my project was completed, my designer said he would like to work with Micah in the future and has already contacted him! Royal-T Construction is first-class!

It was a pleasure working with Justin. He was very thorough and made sure he got our shelves down to the exact size, type of wood and color that we wanted. The fact that he didn't charge us extra for supplies was a breath of fresh air. Most contractors will double your price simply from charging you more for supplies. But he didn't. He bought them at his cost and we just paid him for his time and hard work. We absolutely love our floating shelves that he created for our living room. It was exactly what we wanted and he got it done quicker than we thought too! We'll definitely be hiring him to do a few other projects in our house like creating the mud room and fixing a light in our kitchen.

Stefan does a great job and has a good eye for detail. He provided good professional advice while designing and constructing a whole new bathroom. It is very clear that Stefan knows what he's doing and takes pride in doing things correctly. I would have rated five stars, but there were several delays in construction that I had to ask about rather than being updated on. Nothing terrible, just construction delays. I will recommend and work with Stefan in the future.

Chad just finished our kitchen remodel. We are very pleased with the quality of work and the final result of the project. Our kitchen looks great! We have so much more space than we did before. The kitchen is very functional in its design. We have 6 family members who cook in the kitchen and we are all very pleased with the end result. We will be having a kitchen open house for our friends and neighbors to show off the finished project!

I am soooo happy with my brand new kitchen. From start to finish I was taken care of and my kitchen is perfect. KBD helped me to design everything and thought of small details that I didn't. I appreciated thie expertise and their knowledge. My finished product, from flooring to cabinets, to back splash is superior.

Within about an hour after posting my need for an interior designer/stager for my mom AND a potential to build upon a new market/entrepreneurial concept, Nath called me. His enthusiasm was spot on for me, he is very quick thinking and intelligent as well as creative. He "got," my unique needs for my mom's care. Nath not only caught onto my business needs and how helping me could benefit his business, we almost immediately started to co-create some ideas and direction for my projects! He was very generous of his time and in sharing his creative spirit, as we visited about my mom's unique interior design needs and my vision for providing an extraordinary living environment in a single room living area. I loved his ideas! I loved how he was able to really listen to my concerns, pain, and dreams for improving my mom's quality of life...how one's environment can help them to live better. In fact, Nath, who at a relatively young age has headed up, been involved in amazing projects, hangs one of his hats on the very concept as to how design of indoor and outdoor environments SHOULD help the inhabitants to live easier and better. Environments from small projects to even huge projects are a powerful force, the foundation even for whatever the desired function to be experienced in any given space. He believes, my summation here, that by creative architectural, aesthetic and functional design can interact...sort of meet the users/inhabitants at their levels of function, personal, or collective needs for any given space. I am a Physical Therapist, and I so believe in this concept. Meeting Nath by phone and then in an exciting meeting at my home, was like receiving a huge blessing or cosmic gift in both my mom and my own lives at this very time. His capabilities cross over from being an architect, interior designer, artist, and even virtual design concepts. His mind just seems to be able to meld with his clients' needs, and then well it is like opening a magic cannister which when opened, all of this intelligence, compassion, passion, drive, (in my case) bursts out and grows or flows. He brings all of this, based upon our interactions to date, to the plate on every project from small to large complex projects. Nath is truly one of the top most impressive and talented persons whom I have met in my 52 years of life. I am not exaggerating. I am looking forward to the outcome of my mom's living area as he helps me problem solve her needs/wants and even logistical challenges involved. I am also looking forward to what I/we hope will be a long term business connection across multiple projects. Resources like Nath just don't cross one's path often in life. You have a need in this area of business, I have no doubt that Nath is definitely a person to meet and consider to handle your project...at any stage.

Kore investments recently did a major remodel in my kitchen, removing a wall, moving electrical and plumbing, installing new cabinets, etc. They did excellent work and everyone that was in my home was extremely professional and conscientious. I would recommend them to anyone. Everything turned out beautifully and we love our new kitchen.

I moved to Salt Lake last year and decided to rent an apartment, but i have no experience nor knew how to decorate my apartment, so i've started to look for designers online and found George. I gave him a call and on the next day he was at my place measuring everything and asking question about my taste. It took us around 15 hours (around 3-4 hours a week) to be done. He helped with everything, from telling you what it would fit, what is too expensive, what is a good deal, going to furniture stores with me... Literally everything. I was very picky and particular about what i liked, but george helped me to find exactly what i needed. My place is looking amazing and I'm very thankful for his work.

Mick was very professional, and very informative. He was the first contractor I got a quote from for my kitchen countertops, and provided me with a lot of useful information. His price was also very reasonable, but I still wanted to get a few more quotes. After speaking with a few more contractors, I definitely got the best "feel" from Mick and decided to go with Signature Marble & Granite (even though I did have one quote come in a bit cheaper). It has now been a couple months since he did the job, and we have been very happy with the look and quality of the work. No problems to report. I will definitely consider using him again once we're ready to replace some bathroom countertops!

My mom told her interior designer that I approve of her cabinet maker, and then noted “and coming from Shaun, that says a lot.” It does say a lot. I’m a “Best of Show” woodworker who since college hasn’t done much with woodworking, but a fine artist and very picky. I’m not easily pleased and prefer to do work to have it done right, as even many professionals I’ve found disappointment in. Michael has proved to be a guy I would relish to have around in my own creative circles, and if I ever did custom home or furniture building, I’d want him close to collaborate and perhaps be part? Why? He’s got the passion and the love for quality, fine craftsmanship, wieshmanship. He’s an artist and his love of his craft make him a rare find. In due course, he’ll cost a lot of money for his expertise in creating beautiful things with wood. As I work on this kitchen remodel for my mom, he’s right there open to amazing ideas and has collaborated on great design points. My mother loves the lazy Suzan cabinets that make much better use of space than the 1964 constructed cabinets now being replaced. Micheal is perfectionistic and likes a high quality end result. I appreciate that much, and value him highly as someone to consult with on design and woodwork.

Lori is very creative. I opened up 3 small rooms constituting 1 and a half baths into one large bathroom that literally causes people to gasp before they tell me how amazing it is!! Love the lighting and colors she uses. And her attention to small detail.

We were very pleased with the work the IKEA specialist did for us. He started and finished the job when he said he would and the finished product looked great. He has had a lot of experience with IKEA kitchens and he knows what he's doing.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
