Mike did a phenomenal job redoing my electric on my first floor. He replaced my electrical panel and got the first floor ready to install a new kitchen. On top of that, he replaced my light fixtures across the entire floor. I will most definitely hire again !

I didn't know that I had the wrong flooring surface to install hardwood so instead of making it a frustrating experience for me in delaying the project, Jason worked with me in in giving me a discount price to have his crew remove and install the right surface in a timely matter. Because of this we were able to enjoy an installed hardwood floor in our family room in just a few days. Very good workmanship and very friendly service. Kaisa was very friendly and happy to help with the finishing touches of the flooring to make it look very nice.

They showed up on time. Did a great job prepping the area including laying paper down on the floor to prevent messes as it was rainy outside. They got right to work and did a great job! They are also very nice and personable - and I felt safe while they were here. Highly recommend.

Aaron was quick to respond to our requests. He came to our house to give an estimate and share samples, which made it easier for us given the tight deadline we've been under to get the house on the market. The install was smooth and our floors look like a million times better.

These guys rocked. We spoke on a Thursday night. They came Friday morning for a quote and started on Monday. They removed my old shower and put in a new one! I had hired another guy for cheap, and I got what I paid for. They had to fix his work. They did exactly what we had asked and were clean about it. They cleaned every day to make sure we didn't feel like we were living in a construction zone. They finished in the time frame that they said they would and there were not any hidden fees. I'm a Realtor, and work around a lot of work like this, and I would use these guys again. I probably will and already have referred them to my family and friends. They will be my first recommendation to any of my real estate clients too that want work done to their floors and bathrooms.

You won't find a more caring flooring professional than Chris. We got numerous bids for the hardwood floor work which included adding new flooring to old, sanding, staining, and finishing all with 3 topcoats. After the first visit, we knew Chris was the flooring professional that would take the best care of our floors. He is detailed oriented and methodical... very cautious and very knowledgeable. We consider the hardwood floors one of the biggest investments in our home, and we didn't want to gamble on contractors that seemed in a hurry or careless. We are so glad we chose Chris. The finished product is AMAZING. The floors are beautiful and are now one of our most prize possessions in the home. Chris addressed every concern or question we had along the way. After a long main floor renovation with lots of ups and downs, we can truly say that Chris is the one professional who never let us down in the process. I highly recommend him and his work.

Worked very quickly and was by far the best value/quote I received. Note, I suggest making sure your floor is level if you can. I did not level my floor and some of the tiling did suffer a little. This was my fault and Falcon Tile did a great job considering the lack of a level floor. Highly recommend.

These guys were great! Good communication from start to finish and the work they did was excellent. I had them install some 12'X24" tile in my kitchen...it is an older house and the floors were not level at all. These guys shored up the subfloor and leveled everything out and it looks great! I liked them so much, I had them come back and install a backsplash for me as well. You definitely get what you pay for with tile setters, and these guys do quality work.

We had a very difficult job to be done! Our home had an 80's spiral carpeted staircase including the stairskirt/moulding. We wanted to modernize the look but didn't know how to go about that process. I called and got it scheduled for the next day! Scott Rodriguez had the knowledge and expertise to perform the precision angled cuts for more than 20 angles required to give us a finished look of excellence. They really took their time to evaluate each and every piece that was cut and put into place. Their pricing was very reasonable and we couldn't be happier with the outcome! Thank you HSD Remodeling!

I spoke with Mike but a guy named Javier came out to do the job. I think Javier did a pretty good job, he used a paint sprayer which I wasn't a fan of because it left little spots on the hardwood and the floor was very dusty when he left but overall I would say he did a good job.

Robert is an amazing person, I would trust him with any job. We had him do our basement bathe room and fire place when we finished our basement. Of all the things we had done in our basement including the theater room, the shower and fire place tile gets the most comments. He worked extremely hard until the job was done and even make corrections on a spot or two without me pointing them out. He seems to be a profectionalist and he seems he judges the job harsher than the home owner would. I wouldn't hesitate to hire Robert, if you want a good honest hard working guy at an incredible rate(he should charge more) hire Robert, you won't be disappointed! Thanks Robert!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
