Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a landscaper or lawn care professional during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation call with a lawn care professional or landscaper during the COVID-19 pandemic, take advantage of digital technologies to avoid face-to-face exposure. When searching for lawn mowing, landscaping and lawn care companies online, ask if they’ll do a video call to assess the job and give you an estimate. You can also go over strategies for completing the job and conducting virtual payments to stay safe.

How can I find out if a landscaper or lawn care professional is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To consult national guidelines on essential COVID-19 service providers and see whether a lawn care professional qualifies, visit a page on CISA’s website called Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. This website contains 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors that you can search through. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure so you should also check your city or state’s government website.

Can I use digital payments to pay for outdoor landscaping and design, lawn mowing, tree trimming and other similar services?

Many outdoor landscaping and design, lawn mowing and tree trimming companies will likely accept some form of digital payment instead of cash or check. The COVID-19 pandemic will likely causing more businesses to adopt digital platforms like Zelle, PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash and Google Pay.

Search professionals’ online profiles to see if they list digital payment services, and ask them about their payment policies during a consultation call.

Does a landscaper or lawn care professional need to enter my home?

Because landscaping and lawn maintenance take place outdoors, it is unlikely that these professionals will need to enter your home.

To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, practice social distancing at all times -- even with professionals doing work outside. You can minimize exposure during a consultation by using a video chat service. And when you pay, you can use a digital payment service like PayPal. Discuss strategies with any lawn mowing, landscaping, tree trimming and lawn care companies you may be considering.

Do landscapers or lawn care professionals offer remote or virtual services?

Landscapers and lawn care professionals generally do not offer remote or virtual services. But if you come across a profile that states the landscaper is offering remote services, it’s best to contact them to see what type of remote work is offered.

Typically, lawn care and landscaping professionals can perform many of their duties without coming into physical contact with clients. Message local lawn mowing, landscaping, tree trimming, and lawn care companies near you to schedule a video call and inquire about remote services.

Is hiring a landscaper worth it?

A landscaper is worth it if you don't want to invest a significant amount of time and effort into planting, trimming, raking, weeding and performing other operations on your garden or yard. Hiring a landscaper to perform regular maintenance in your yards and complete bigger projects is valuable if you’re looking to sell your house. A professional landscaper can make your house more appealing to potential buyers.

Some landscapers may perform maintenance duties — remove leaves, mow lawns, trim trees and shrubs, etc. —  but they can also help you bring bigger projects to life. This may include adding a misting system, an outdoor fireplace, water features, artificial turf, a patio and much more.

Start contacting landscapers near you to get free estimates and start planning your project today.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

I hired Luis for a complicated, large scale landscape job. Some of the quotes I received from other landscape contractors were jaw dropping. Luis came up with a reasonable bid and did a great job. Luis had great ideas for how to solve our severely sloped landscape. He listens to what you want, makes great suggestions, shows up on time and works hard to get you what you want at a price point you can afford. Love Luis...highly recommended

Overall, we are extremely happy In our choice to work with Heath and Cory at Humin Organics. We cannot thank them enough for helping us complete our front landscaping job. When a previous landscaper was injured and had to back out of the project, we were stuck in a lurch. I contacted Humin Earth - Brothers Home & Lawn and spoke with Heath, who scheduled an appointment to come out right away. It was Immediately obvious that Heath and Cory knew their way around landscaping, including the best product treatment to care for our early Fall planting of ground cover and trees. They were always respectful of our time by meeting the projects start date and keeping us current on any additional hours needed to complete the project. We were apprised of additional landscaping products that would enhance the look of our yard and were patient with the time we needed to make those decisions. We also asked Heath to utilize their fertilizer products on our trees and the 132 ground cover starters throughout our yard. We were happy and surprised to see our trees and ground covering start to flourish even with planting in the Fall. I am completely sold on their product, customer service, timely communication and overall positive and uplifting vibes they showered upon our yard and home. Thank you so very much, Heath and Cory! Apo does honest quality work. He has a large crew of loyal men. He has the equipment, man power and skills to do large landscaping jobs. The end result was beautiful and worth every penny I paid. My home is on a half acre. The land was overgrown with weeds and full of debris. Apo's crew cleared the field of debris, trimmed and raked up all the weeds, and hauled away a lot of stuff. He ground out several tree stumps, moved a mound of dirt, and trimmed up my trees. In the front yard Apo's crew dug out lots of gravel off of my lawn area. Leveled and graded the ground, Brought in new top soil and installed new sod. To finish it all off he weeded around my flower bed and removed weeds that were growing in cracks on the edge of my driveway. Apo gave me instructions on how to care for the new lawn and advice on maintenance of my other landscaping at my home. Supreme Tree is a great landscaping company and I am happy with the work they did.

From the first moment I started working with Hak, I was impressed. When I submitted my landscaping request to Thumbtack, I received a few bids. Hak not only promptly responded to my bid, he also made an appointment for the next day to come take a look at our yard! I had been trying to get other landscapers to come out and my experience was they either didn't get back to me, or they made appointments that they didn't keep. So, Hak already impressed me with his promptness! Besides basic maintenance, like cleaning out weeds and adding new mulch, I also wanted ideas for possible future projects for our yard. We have possible ponds and meditation gardens in mind, but don't exactly know what we want to do. Hak was immediately on my wavelength and gave me amazing suggestions that we can do with our yard. It was so refreshing to not only have a landscaper be so responsive, but also so creative with his ideas! I hired him, and he and his team were able to come out much quicker than he originally thought. They came out one evening and pretty much stayed until it was done. They even worked in the dark for a bit! It was really awesome to wake up the next day and have a beautifully transformed yard! Their work was terrific! I am looking forward to hiring Hak and his team again for the future projects we discussed! They were awesome!

I would rate Tony 10 stars if I could. I purchased my first home and it came with a neglected backyard that I felt was beyond salvaging. Tony and his crew worked their magic to turn it into something that I can be proud to show off. This included installing a new fence and an entirely new sprinkler system. The price was very reasonable for the amount of work involved, and Tony made himself available at every stage of the process when I had questions or concerns. I was worried that I was coming off as one of those overbearing homeowners, but Tony was very kind and accommodating. I am beaming with pride at my new yard and have already recommended Tony to a couple of my coworkers. I’ll be calling Tony back for any of my landscaping needs!

Ruben and his crew have done amazing work! The project isn't quite finished, but all the finishing touches should be done tomorrow. Ruben has been great to work with and his price was unbeatable! We got bids through Thumbtack and also some from contractors we contacted directly. The project included the entire backyard and a little work in the front, including excavating and grading, construction of a block retaining wall and steps, concrete curbing, installation of a sprinkler system and drip irrigation for flower beds and a garden area, garden boxes, sod, gravel fill, top soil, and burying of drain lines. The other contractors bid as much as double Ruben's bid for the same work. Ruben started the work as soon as the snow melted and worked in between each of the snow storms throughout February and then really started progressing in March after it warmed up and stopped snowing. His work product has been great and he was responsive to minor additions and changes I requested throughout the process. Don't hesitate to hire Ruben. I definitely won't hesitate to call him for future landscaping projects.
