Ed Bilo (the owner) wEnt good service for my wife and the cleanup needed done. We had gotten several other prices and ED was the cheapest and most professional. Beware of other contractors on thumbtack that are not a licensed and insured businesses. I inquired about Eds business insurance since it was important for my wife and I to make sure that the job was done right and the first time. I had proof of insurance from Ebrr within hours of the posting...other contractors wouldn't even respond. Will be calling back again for future needs.

Great craftsmanship, professional, and easy to communicate with. Worked with my schedule to complete the project according to my timeline. My bed was put together perfectly, and headboard mounted into masonry. I find a common theme amongst contractors in that they don't clean up after themselves, leaving saw dust and waste materials for the home owner to clean. While I did have to do some fine tuning in the cleaning department, Trenton did at least attempt to clean up the area by picking up and disposing of the larger waste pieces. I would definitely hire him again.

Very courteous and responsive to my needs. Provided a fair estimate and found that what was estimated was not the problem. Repriced the job (lower). I will definitely use this contractor again. Thanks much.

"After some miscommunication on the initially agreed upon time, Tim called me this following morning to apologize and see if they could come by to move the furniture that day. I wasn't available to answer the call and tried to call him back. While the phone was ringing, my doorbell rang. It was Tim and a helper asking if he could move the furniture. I very much appreciated his initiative and willingness to apologize. (It's incredible how many contractors we've had who lack both.) They moved our items upstairs with minimal damage. It wasn't an easy task to get our couch up the stairs and around the turn, but he took great care and breaks when needed, which is exactly what we wanted."

I can’t say enough about what a great professional and thorough job Kelvin did! He came out within hours of my request, bought all the material he would need, and fixed the piping under my bathroom sink. It didn’t take long at all and he is the most reasonably priced contractor thus far! Thank you and I will be using you again for several projects!

I cannot say enough good things about RB Construction (Remberto and his crew) on their work during our kitchen relocation. Honest, fair, reasonable price, quick and resourceful. You cannot beat their prices. I tried to on drywall, cabinet installation, painting, carpentry finish and tile work and nobody came close To make a long story short, I had him out to bid on patching drywall after electrician ran wiring and ending up hiring Remberto to finish the entire kitchen. We live in a house built in the 1930s and moved our old galley kitchen to the family room. Remberto and crew did a beautiful job on the tile work to include all the difficult subflooring work. They also did an excellent job on drywall and smoothing out transition with old plaster. Finally, they did an amazing job on installation of kitchen cabinets despite the fact that none of the walls were square or the ceiling level, as well as the custom installation of a 300 lb. country sink. They are true craftsmen! I wish I would have found Remberto when I start my remodel job. He would have saved me time, money and headaches.

I was delighted by my experience working with Ordonez. He installed a marble backsplash in my kitchen. His price was competitive but it was his conscientiousness, thoroughness, and commitment to excellence that impressed me the most. I’ve worked with many home contractors, and this is one of the best. Fully recommend!

Renaissance did an amazing job on my den. I originally hired them to mount a tv and ended up having him paint 2 rooms as well. They were on time, very responsive and knowledgeable. I had another contractor install a cable outlet and electrical outlet above my fireplace to make the mounting of my tv easy. However that contractor didn't do an efficient job and when Antonio mounted the tv both outlets were showing. It is very important to me that only the tv be visible after mounting. Antonio assured me that he would not only hide the cable box and cords but would fix the other contractors work as well. I was able to relax and everything was taken care of to my specifications. They went above and beyond to ensure that my needs were met and I was satisfied with the job. I would recommend them as well as use them again for other home improvement projects.

Edgar has consistently provided excellent value and well crafted electrical work for our Owner / Builder new home construction project. He has roughed-in, and set outlets, switches and fixtures. Post construction he has wired a Generac whole house standby generator and added several additional circuits for me. Sometimes it is frustrating dealing with small sub-contractors; not with Edgar- he is always on time, always efficient, always great quality work. We couldn't recommend him more highly. I typically do not ever write reviews, but this contractor is a special exception to the point that not doing so would be wrong. Words truly cannot express how fortunate I feel that I was able to work with this crew, and how lucky I am that they reached out to me. We needed a renovation project done on the first floor of our rental property, and after meeting with several other contractors, we were starting to feel like finding a reliable contractor who could start working on it before mid to late-August at a reasonable price was a lost cause. Then, we came across Brandon Contractor. Not only did they quote us an extremely reasonable price that was less than half of other quotes we had been given, but they also scheduled us in sooner than anyone else we talked to. To make things even better, they were able to start working on our project almost a week earlier than originally planned due to some postponements on other projects. Once they started working, I was blown away by how hard this crew works. They worked from 8 am to 6 pm, only taking a break to eat lunch, and didn't take any shortcuts in terms of quality and detail (they honestly might have cared about getting it done exactly right more than I did). Also, perhaps most importantly, they never once even mentioned raising the quote despite the project turning out to be much bigger (requiring more materials/man hours) than originally expected. To top it all off, the crew cleaned up after themselves each and every day that they were here, and completed the project faster than anybody else told us they would be able to do it even though they had multiple other projects going on at the same time. There is no doubt in my mind that any time I have a project that needs to be done to make our property look better, Brandon Contractor will be the first contractor I contact. They are by far the best crew I could've found, and I couldn't be happier with the results of their work!

Erick and his team are exceptional. I contracted Erick initially to do some minor house repairs. However, after not being satisfied with the work of contractor hired to paint, I asked Erick to do a lot more work to include painting, installation of kitchen appliance, replace flooring, miscellaneous carpentry, and electrical work. Erick was so responsive to my need to get the work done quickly as getting ready to list house. Quality of work is good, Erick knows his trade and made suggestions and recommendations that proved to be invaluable. His team are hard workers and take pride in what they do. And, the pricing is exceptional. Definitely recommend and will use again in the future.

Patrick's work is second to none. He took the time to make sure the wheelchair ramp for my father was ADA compliant. His entire concern throughout the job was to maintain my dad's safety and comfort. Also, not only is the ramp very sturdy, it looks nice too. When the job was finished, there was absolutely no mess. Everything was cleaned like the construction never happened! I plan on referring Stares Restoration to everybody.

Naser was great. He was on time, fixed our problems while only doing a estimate walk-thru, and didn't charge us anything. We insisted on giving him $50 because now we no longer need a plumber. Our big issues were the garbage disposal and leaky toilet. He found a tiny drill bit in the garbage disposal left over from kitchen contractors and fixed our toilet on the spot.

Tim and his crew did a great job on our basement finishing! Tim was very knowledgeable throughout the process and was very accommodating to with our busy schedules. He and his crew were very trustworthy as most of the time they worked in the house while we were away. Special thanks to Neil and the other gentleman on the team. They were always very friendly and responsive when I needed anything or had a question. My only negative, hence 4 stars, would be that I would have liked to only have had Tim as the sole POC versus us having to deal one on one with the other contractors on the project as it made for a lot of calls and additional tasks to manage. This was our first project so we were not really sure how everything worked. All in all, they did a great job and made our space beautiful! We would definitely use again for any project!

Sam has an excellent team. Quote was a great value, work was completed on time and cleanup was excellent. I met four of his team members through our demo and construction project and they were all professional and courteous. I especially appreciated one female team member. Her paint skills are impressive! Kudos to Sam for hiring skilled workers, no matter gender. We will definitely hire him again for future projects.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
