How do you refinish kitchen cabinets?

If you’re ready for a new look and feel in your kitchen but don’t want to replace the cabinet layout or your cabinet doors, refinishing your existing kitchen cabinets is a great option. To be a good candidate for cabinet refinishing, your cabinet boxes and doors need to be in good condition. Cabinet refinishing includes taking down your doors, sanding or stripping the surface, preparing the doors with primer as needed, refinishing them with as many coats of stain or paint are necessary, then re-hanging them in their original locations. If you’re not in love with your kitchen cabinet layout, talk to a designer or contractor about creating an alternative. Refinishing simply means adding new shine to the existing setup, so if you’re dying to have a pull-out pantry or maximize wall space by going flush to the ceiling, you may want a different approach. Functional and stylish ready-to-assemble (RTA) cabinets can be similar in cost to refacing your existing cabinets, so keep the budget-friendly RTA option in mind when making decisions.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a flooring professional during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To safely set up a consultation or appointment with a flooring professional and avoid the risk of transmitting COVID-19, start with an online search. Contact the professional through a message and ask to set up a video or phone call to discuss the project. This lets the professional visualize what needs to be done without physically needing to be there. Discuss the project’s timeline, budget, virtual payment capabilities and adherence to guidelines set forth locally and by the CDC.

How can I find out if a flooring professional is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To find out whether a flooring professional is considered an essential service in the current coronavirus pandemic, consult your city or state’s government website. To get a sense of the national recommendations, check CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage

This page lists 16 different infrastructure sectors that are officially considered essential during this time. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure. Ultimately, you should consult with your local government.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a flooring professional when social distancing?

If you hire a flooring professional for an outdoor project, you may be able to avoid person-to-person contact with the pro. If you hire a pro for an indoor job, avoid physical contact, sanitize surfaces and use virtual payments like PayPal, Venmo, Google Pay and Square Cash App to complete transactions instead of using cash or checks. Determine a strategy with the flooring professional when you contact them.

Can I use digital payments to pay for floor installation, replacement or repairs?

Many local flooring professionals offer digital payments to conduct transactions for floor repairs, installation, replacement and more. This trend has been increasing during the COVID-19 pandemic, which is prompting flooring professionals to take payments through Venmo, Square Cash, PayPal, Google Pay, Zelle and other convenient platforms.

To ensure you can safely pay for the service, contact the professional beforehand and ask which services are acceptable. Take any measures necessary to comply with guidelines on social distancing.

How do you resurface cabinets?

Resurfacing kitchen cabinets means that you retain your original cabinet boxes and existing cabinet layout and simply remove and replace the front layer of your cabinet doors. Cabinet resurfacing can also entail replacing damaged cabinet doors, keeping those that are in good shape, and installing a new surface on all of them. Cabinet resurfacing may also refer to a decision to completely change out cabinet doors because they are damaged or their style is out of date, but keeping the existing cabinet boxes and layout.

If you’re handy and have all the proper tools, cabinet resurfacing can be a DIY project, especially if you’re simply repainting. However, if you’re not comfortable removing and replacing your cabinet doors, doing precision measurements and cutting, or working with sanders and power tools, then this may be a project better left to the pros. You or your handyman or cabinet installation specialist will remove all cabinet door and drawer fronts and all hardware, then prepare the surfaces for a new layer. The pros should also update the veneer or laminate the frames to match. Once the new laminate, veneer or surface has been applied and new hardware installed, your cabinet doors and drawers are hung once more in their original locations. The national average cost for refacing cabinets is $5,000.

Can you resurface laminate cabinets?

Resurfacing laminate cabinets is an affordable and relatively easy way to give an outdated kitchen a fresh new look. If your existing cabinets are in good shape and you like your current cabinet layout, putting a fresh face on your kitchen could mean simply painting over the current laminate or putting a new laminate surface on the doors and drawers. Cabinet resurfacing may be possible for the capable DIY homeowner, but if you don’t have the proper tools or the know-how, it’s wise to call a handyman or a cabinet installation specialist to ensure you have a professional-looking outcome. To make sure your kitchen is right for cabinet resurfacing (as opposed to completely replacing your cabinets), ask yourself:

  • Do I like the layout of my current cabinets?
  • Are the cabinet boxes structurally sound?
  • Are the floor and framing in good condition to keep cabinets supported over time?
  • Are the cabinets free of water or wood damage?

Does a flooring professional need to enter my home?

If the flooring project is located inside your residence, performing the job would require the flooring professional to enter your home. This is not recommended by the CDC during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, if a flooring project takes place in a separate location outside of your home, the flooring professional will not need to enter your home.

Talk to flooring professionals in your area to see if it’s necessary for them to enter your home. If so, you might want to postpone the project until social distancing guidelines are relaxed by the government.

How much does it cost to refinish kitchen cabinets?

Cabinet refinishing revives dull or dinged-up doors and drawers. The cost of cabinet refinishing will vary based on factors such as the number of linear feet of cabinetry you have, the amount of nicks and scratches that need repair, the level of detail on your cabinets, and more. The pros typically will remove the cabinet doors and then sand or strip them down to create a beautifully smooth new surface. After prepping the surface with primer as needed, the pros may then repaint or stain the doors to give them a new lease on life. Cabinets with intricate detail or extensive surface damage will likely cost more to refinish, as they will take more time and effort. Keep in mind that you should only elect to do cabinet refinishing if the cabinet boxes are structurally sound and you plan to keep your current kitchen layout for a number of years. The investment will be wasted if the cabinet boxes are in disrepair and will need replacement soon, or if you’re planning a remodel in two years. The national average price range for cabinet refinishing is between $1,500 and $6,000.

Do flooring professionals offer remote or virtual services?

Because flooring work has to be done in-person, flooring professionals are typically unable to perform work virtually. If you come across a pro's profile that states they're offering remote services, message the pro to see what those services include.

If you plan to get indoor flooring installed once the pandemic is over, you can ask potential flooring specialists if they host virtual consultations through video calls and digital messaging. Compare flooring professionals in your area online to find the right fit, and book an appointment.

John Burnett is a furniture restoration expert and a very nice guy. He is the consummate professional, knowledgeable, and pleasant to work with. I have a massive master bedroom set that was old and faded. Although it was not very expensive furniture to begin with, I wanted it refinished because I'm downsizing and need these pieces for the extra storage they provide. John provided a reasonable estimate, picked up the pieces, refinished everything beautifully, delivered and reassembled everything perfectly. I would highly recommend John's services.

I gave Sue an old, abused hutch and some vague color choices, and she returned to me the perfect piece to display my antique china in. Her work ethic is high, and her talent is undeniable. I strongly recommend Tanglewood Works for furniture refinishing.

Great job!..I initially engaged Jeff to refinish the tops of two end tables. However time and environment had faded the finish on the two tables differently and one was lighter than the other. He went the extra mile and stripped one table entirely and restained and varnished so that the end tables matched more precisely. He gave me excellent advice on how to care for the tables in the future and provided the source for an excellent wood wax.

Sue is absolutely BEYOND amazing when it comes to artistic talent and incredible furniture refinishing skills. She took two old family pieces and completely transformed them so I could use them in my new jewelry display room (I’m a jewelry designer) adjacent to my home studio. I had a very specific idea of what I was looking for, and Sue just went above and beyond. Check out my before and after photos. I absolutely give Sue and Tanglewood Works the highest possible recommendation!

Ford and team did a really great job refinishing our existing 70 year old wood floors and seamlessly integrating them with new wood flooring in an adjacent space. He really went out of the way to make a great transition (What was originally a concrete step was refaced with a new wood tread and riser), and even delivered the flooring to our house over the weekend to accommodate our schedule. He was very courteous, knowledgeable, and willing to go out of the way to make sure we were happy with the end result and completed the job very quickly. We would definitely hire again.

We had our floors refinished by MJA design and the final product turned out great. Whitney was a true professional from the initial contact, doing a thorough estimate, and working with us through several mishaps in the process. We were even able to start our project several days earlier than initially predicted. Unfortunately, while Alex and his crew were very helpful in putting down sample areas to help us decide which stain color to use; instead of then sanding out the sample areas to be the same bare finish as the rest of the floors, the crew stained over them along with the rest of the bare floor, leaving the sample areas with noticeable boxes where two coats were applied (the sample coat plus the one coat the rest of the floors received). Whitney was quick to bring the crew back and have them fix it, but unfortunately their fix left a much larger section that looked noticeably darker from the rest of the floors. Whitney was quick to bring the crew back again to fix that attempt and ensured all stain any poly was stripped and again refinished. While there are still very minor noticeable differences in the problem areas, we are ultimately satisfied with how everything turned out and really appreciate Whitney's and Alex's follow-through to make sure things turned out as we wanted--even after we already gave final payment. That is a commitment to customer service that is highly commendable and sincerely appreciated. Our only gripe is the way that the process played out, dragging what should have been a 3 or 4-day project to 10-days. The persistence in fixing the problems warrants five stars, but the frustrations of not having everything been done well the first (or even second) time knocks off 1-star.

Ford and crew were very responsive and did a wonderful job on refinishing our floor for a reasonable price. We had a bit of a miscommunication that left us waiting around a while for the initial estimate, but otherwise they were fairly prompt. I appreciated his willingness to respond to my questions over Thumbtack (particularly in comparison to others floor people on here) and via text message as well as on the phone. The previous owners of our home had painted over some wires tacked onto the baseboards and the paint was cracking and ripping as they were removing the shoe molding to do the work on the floor. Ford offered to come back and install the shoe molding for us after we've had time to repaint the molding that was damaged by the methods of the previous owners, which I appreciated. We were on a tight timeline trying to get the floors done between closing on the house and moving in and Modern Floors was able to accommodate our schedule and work with us to get it done when we needed it to be done. The finished product looks beautiful and they did a great job matching the color of the engineered hardwood floor we have on the main floor. The only cons to our experience was the lateness to the initial estimate appointment and it would have been nice to get an email copy of the estimate. I would not hesitate to recommend them to a friend!
