Cesar was very professional and built my complicated bed, set of drawers, desk, and living room couch from ikea. He was much faster and more efficient than the builder that my friend hired. His price was very fair especially for his work.

Eagle Home improvements did a fantastic job repairing a pipe that burst due to faulty labor from my home builder. They showed me the damage, repaired it quickly, and ensured I knew how to properly shut off the water in the future. I will definitely use them again in the future. They were easy to work with and communicated clearly through Thumbtack throughout the process. I wish every service provider were as easy to work with as Eagle Home.

Juan and his associate did a great job for me. We ha d a couple small wall patch jobs and some sticky doors - true handyman tasks. Juan came over promptly, evaluated the job and was able to complete everything that same afternoon. He was courteous, cleaned up after himself and professional. He even pointed out some caulking that our builder missed! We will definitely hire him again.

Nicodemo Blanco (Nico) has been my painter in two large Potomac homes for over twenty years. His knowledge in the field of painting is extensive. His work is impeccable. Nico has helped me with various carpentry and handyman projects as well. He is always cheerful and goes above and beyond to complete a job to the highest standards. His paint prep. and painting is second to none; his work ethic is A+. I am a fastidious homeowner requiring anyone working in my home to be clean and top notch. I couldn't ask for a greater painter than Nico. He leaves my home neat and beautiful. I highly recommend Nico.

I am an Architect and have worked with Saul on several projects. Throughout my years of practice I have worked with and around many Contractors, my experience with Saul is he is honest, sincere and straight forward with customers. These are admirable qualities in a builder, I say this because a straight forward and sincere builder excepts the risk of a not so forthright Contractor coming behind them and telling a customer what may not be a proper and professional assessment. Saul excepts this risk knowing it's the right thing to do.

Very please with my experience. Stephen was very patient and took his time installing the door. The precision of doing it right the first time was extremely important to him. I plan in the future to use him for four additional projects since I will be moving into a bigger home with my family. We spoke as he was installing the door, and decided to make him our permanent contractor. I recommend his services! Crazy how my neighbors also endorsed his work only seeing the replaced door that he installed the same day.

Al sent us a carpenter - Mark - who was great. He was very proficient in his work - and worked basically unnoticed by us - with very little noise and almost no disturbance. He was able to quickly adjust to small difficulties (due to the backing of our cabinets), and finished his job quicker than expected. All around great experience - and would be happy to go with them again. Thanks again, to both Al and Mark!

In planning our move from Northern Virginia to our home in Florida, My wife and I faced a potentially costly issue with having to replace our dining room table and buffet set, because the 104" long table would not fit into the considerably smaller dining room in our new home in Florida. Although we really did not want to replace the set, we had already conceded that we would have to run a local Craigslist ad, and hopefully be able to find a buyer who would offer us pennies on a dollar for the set, or have to give it away for free before the movers show up in 30 days. My wife was already looking at $5,000 replacement sets. Ouch! Running out of time, I thought if I could find a skilled woodworking craftsman that would take on a small but challenging project such cutting down a table top by about 20", we may be able to make the dining set work in the new home. Through Thumbtack, I described the project, received a list of potential woodworkers, and solicited to a half dozen furniture builders for the project. I received a response from only one individual, Gerry Hurley of Max Min Design. I read the reviews of Gerry's work, and impressed by the photos of his past projects, we hired Gerry. Gerry's price to do the project was very reasonable, and in addition, he said that he would be able to complete the job in ample time before the movers show up. Gerry got right on it. He came to the house with the right tools and was able to do a fantastic job; cutting down the table top, making the necessary modifications to the under supports, shortening the finished side rails, and stained and finished the end cut surface to perfectly match the rest of the table. Gerry even used scrap from wood removed to make a number of matching wood plugs to cover all the new screw holes in the shortened side rails, to look exactly like the original construction. To look at the table now, it is impossible to detect that the table had ever been modified. In addition, Gerry also stained and finished the 20" section that was removed so that I can possibly use later for a nice sized matching coffee table. All I need to do is add the four legs. Gerry, I welcome you and your good ethical nature to this USA. The end product and the professionalism you show in your work clearly portrays the pride you take in your skill and craftsmanship. A great job Gerry! Thank you!

After interviewing several builders, my wife and I selected Winthorpe Design & Build based on previous projects. Scott and his staff were attentive during the pre-construction phase, the building phase and remain so many months after the project was completed. Krag (Designer/Estimator was very close to being on budget (after several changes we had made) and in the end Winthorpe’s craftsmanship exceeded our expectations. We have received numerous complements about our home and are happy when people drop by and ask "who built your home?". I would hire his firm again but that won't be necessary, my wife & I are living in our dream house with the security that it was well designed and built. We had a few questions after moving in and Krag came out to walk through (again) to explain how some of the high tech items we wanted worked (media room, security system and the whole house stereo, lights and window shades (all wireless and that are controlled by our tablets & phones ).

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

Do you tip cabinet installers?

In general, home service providers such as electricians, plumbers and contractors are professionals who don’t expect tips. They expect to do a job for you for the specific price they quoted. Of course, they may appreciate a tip for a job particularly well done or for which they’ve gone beyond what’s normally expected, such as completing the project early or under budget. Even better than a tip, it’s always appropriate to leave a positive review online after a good experience.

How much is custom cabinetry?

Custom cabinets can be built for any room, including bedroom closets and built-in armoires. Measured carefully and built precisely, custom cabinetry can increase storage and beautify any room. The national average for building custom cabinets ranges from $500 to $1,200 per linear foot. The cost is highly variable because there are so many styles, colors, glazes and other options. In general, the linear footage of the cabinets, the materials used to build them, and the cost of the labor will determine the cost. Solid wood costs more than plywood and wood veneer, and costs vary among different types of wood; maple and cherry cabinets are more expensive than pine. Glass-front cabinets can cost more, as can decorative hinges, handles and door pulls, which can cost $2-$45 each; choose carefully to stay within your budget and pull off the exact look you’re going for. Some carpenters also charge for installation, on average $100 per cabinet box. Additional molding and trim, such as crown molding at the ceiling, cost an average of $70 per 8-foot section, and adding finished ends to exposed cabinets averages $100-$200.

How much does it cost to have kitchen cabinets installed?

In any kitchen, the cabinets are the main focus, so you want to make sure new or replacement cabinets are installed correctly. A professional carpenter can properly, securely mount new cabinets to the wall; the national average cost for this service is $7,725, although the cost varies widely depending on the type of cabinets, their material and their size, and the accessories you add. A typical fee is $70 per linear foot to remove existing cabinets and assemble and install new ones; the cost is less if you do the demolition and removal yourself. Stock cabinets are the least expensive to have installed, ranging from $75 to $400 each; semi-custom cabinets range from $150 to $900 each; and custom cabinets cost from $500 to $1,400 each. Wood cabinets are more expensive than those made from plywood or medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and finished with a laminate. Wood cabinets range in cost from $80 to $160 per linear foot. Laminate-finished cabinets cost $35 to $75 per linear foot, on average.
