"Pastor Mark served as our wedding officiant and provided our premarital counseling when my husband and I got married two years ago. He is one of the nicest, most genuine people we've met and my husband and I are thankful he was part of our big day. Mark completely customized our ceremony and helped make our day so special. He also made us feel very comfortable during our premarital counseling sessions, which were great preparation for marriage. I highly recommend him to other Christian couples who are looking for a wedding officiant and/or premarital counseling. Mark is wonderful!"

"My husband and I found Deandre to be extremely helpful in growing together as we prepared for our wedding day. He always came to our sessions with good questions and key talking point to help us think about different situations that could happen later in our marriage and also help with things that were already going on. The two books he had us read were incredible and helped us grow individually as well as, as a couple. I would recommend Deondre for not only premarital counseling but all counseling."

"We had the pleasure of having Daphne as our wedding officiant. Her kindness and personality were sincere and compassionate. She remained in contact with us throughout the planning phase of our wedding and returned all emails lightning fast. Her prices are more than fare, and lower than anyone else we inquired with in the area. I would highly recommend her to anyone, you won't regret it!"

"We were extremely pleased with Mr. Broyles, and think that he was the perfect wedding officiant for us. He was warm and friendly, and put us at-ease immediately. Having never met us before, he took some time to talk to us and discuss what the ceremony should be like and include/not include (we had a somewhat last-minute, private elopment ceremony at one of our favorite outdoor spots in Alabama). He was very willing to work with us on location and what to include/not include in the ceremony. Mr. Broyles met us for the first time in the hour before the ceremony, yet managed to make our ceremony more beautiful and meaningful than we could have ever asked for! He was meant to be there as our wedding officiant, for sure, and I will be forever grateful for the beautiful words he said during our simple ceremony. Could not have asked for anyone better- thank you so much, Mr. Broyles!"

"We could not imagine our wedding ceremony with out Aron. His guidance and mentoring leading up to the wedding and the day of were so meaningful as we prepared for our new life together as Husband and Wife. Having just celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary we still have family and friends who say how impactful and special our ceremony was because of the message that was given by Aron. A commitment to Christ and having a christ centered marriage was an important message we wanted to share with our non-christian family and friends and Aron's ability to share that in a welcoming way was truly a gift. Not only that but also the words of encouragement and exhortation given specifically to my husband and I are something we carry with us forever. "

"Caroline is truly a master healer. My request for treatment was tied to emotional well being. The energy was so very positive leaving me completely relaxed and in a much calmer and more serene state. On another occasion, Caroline healed an intense knee sprain/flareup which happened while I had been doing extensive walking and moderate hiking. After an evening treatment I awoke to absolutely no pain! Unfortunately I am not geographically close to Caroline now so it is my intention to try her long distance phone healing."

"When you pick someone to officiate your wedding, their words will impact the entire mood of the room. Jennifer uses her words impeccably and puts true meaning behind each one. She is an amazing woman. Jennifer crafted a beautiful, heartfelt ceremony filled with laughs, tears, hope, and of course all the love I could ever imagine. You will be so happy with her as your officiant. I couldn't praise her more. She is the best!"

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to officiate a wedding?

The national average cost to hire a wedding officiant is $150-$200. Wedding officiant rates are affected by the date of the ceremony, the time of day, and how far the officiant has to travel. Some officiants may charge extra for additional ceremonies like unity candles or sand ceremonies, as well as the cost of the supplies. Many wedding officiants have higher rates for larger weddings and lower rates for smaller, more intimate ceremonies. Personalizing the ceremony means a lot to some couples. Wedding officiants may have flat rates for standard ceremony templates, perhaps $100-$125, and charge more for a more customized experience, such as $150-$200. This allows the couple to collaborate with the wedding officiant as they are building a unique ceremony script. At the pre-wedding meeting, the officiant will ask whether the couple plans to write their own vows and how much input they have about the rest of the wording and flow of the ceremony. Additional planning meetings and extra communication can add up to a higher overall cost. If your venue has parking or other fees, you may need to pay on behalf of the officiant. Often wedding officiants can rent sound systems and wireless mics if you have an outdoor wedding location or venue that is not wired. These extras will also increase the overall cost.

What does it mean to officiate a wedding?

To officiate a wedding is to oversee the official union of two people in marriage. A wedding officiant is vested with the power to legitimize your union in the eyes of the court. An officiant also sets the tone for your ceremony, leading the couple through their vows and shaping the experience with the words they choose and the pace they set. An officiant may be based in a religious faith, may be an interfaith officiant, may be a secular officiant, or may be a friend or family member who has received ordination online.

You can have a traditional wedding officiated, or you can also have an officiant oversee a commitment ceremony, a vow renewal or an elopement. Once the wedding is complete, the officiant will ask you to sign the wedding certificate, and will then submit the document to the court on your behalf. This makes your marriage legal. Wedding officiants work with you no matter how simple or elaborate you would like your ceremony to be. The more involved wedding officiants are in the planning and customization of the ceremony, the more they will typically charge.

Who performs a wedding ceremony?

Anyone who is authorized by the court or a credible online source has the power to perform a wedding ceremony. Traditionally, wedding officiants were ordained members of a religious organization or civil officiants authorized by the court to legally marry two people. With the increasing customization and personalization of weddings, many couples are asking a friend or family member to become ordained and act as their wedding officiant. Wedding officiants can represent a wide range of backgrounds including Christian, Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, nondenominational, interfaith or nonreligious. There is no legally required structure for a wedding ceremony, so couples can customize the language of the ceremony and their vows in any way they desire (though members of some religions may have specific requirements). To legally validate the marriage, the couple and the wedding officiant must sign a marriage certificate after the ceremony verifying the date and names of those involved. The wedding officiant should then submit the certificate to the court, which will in turn mail an official marriage certificate to the newly married couple.
