John did a great job mounting our TV above our corner fireplace. He also helped troubleshoot an electrical problem with an exterior outlet. In addition, I had John install lattice work around the base of our porch. He was very courteous, neat and organized. We will have him back to do some other projects.

I worked with John directly to replace my front porch flooring and rotted joist. He was quick to provide a quote and stuck to his number, while still remaining flexible to the project's needs. His crew was timely, efficient and friendly. We are thrilled with the finished product, I highly recommend Service One for your carpentry needs.

Chris did an excellent job installing our porch ceiling fan. We had a sleeping baby upstairs and he was very mindful of this which was well appreciated. He was also very responsive, punctual, and efficient with his time. You could also tell that he has a wealth of experience. All around positive experience.

Howard replaced some rotting boards on my front porch. He replies quickly. His pricing was considerable lower than the other estimates that I received and he offered to repaint for a nominal fee.

He got started the next day following the estimate and began very early in the morning at 7:45am. I asked for wood patching on my porch where it had chipped away near the end and repainting of the deck and pillars on the porch as well as resealing the back concrete patio. I'm satisfied with the work performed and the price I paid. The only reason I did not give 5 stars is because i had to put things back like plants and patio furniture left out in the yard, so minus one star for lack of finishing detail.

He came quickly & was able to adapt to our needs given several challenges. We could never have done this ourselves. The resulting outside porch & hand rail are perfect for an elder to navigate the steps - she is very happy & has more independence now as requested.

Al was amazing. We hired him to scrape popcorn and paint our ceilings. We were getting the house ready to sell our house and he came back to help us fix things from plumbing, to screening in a porch, to landscaping. He did it very quickly and because of him we were able to get our house on the market in time. I cannot day enough good things about him - he was so nice, always on time, and very fair price.

I was referred to Ron through a friend to power wash my house. While he and his team were at my house they pointed out a few areas that may require attention in the future(rotten molding around a door). They walked around with me when they were finished to make sure that I was satisfied. I was so thrilled I had them repair the molding as well as convert my porch railings and posts to PVC so I wouldn't have to worry about those in the future. I would highly recommend this company for repairs, upkeep, maintenance or improvements. They are professional from the beginning to the end.

I rent my house out in Richmond and I live in MD. I was looking online to find someone to fix my porch very reluctantly. He was the first one to response to my request. He went out there to look at the project and received good comments from my tenant. We text and talked on the phone to see what will be the best option, so we went with demo the porch and put up composite. He said it will take 4 days and he made sure he stayed in that time frame and sent over pictures. If I had concerns he did fix it or explain to me the reason. Overall we are pleased with the results. Thank you.

Jorge has completed numerous projects for me as I update and renovate my home. He is prompt, courteous, has assistance from his wife and son, is trustworthy, reasonable, and efficient. Most importantly he is honest. He first assesses the project, then sends a written estimate via email, gives a starting date, and cleans up after he completes each task. He buys the materials and brings them to the job. He saves me worry and time. He has completed the following projects for me: 1. Repaired drywall where I had had a water leak and painted the ceiling. 2. Painted all of my wood trim and turned it white. (Totally changed the brightness of the rooms). Has painted 5 rooms. 3. Removed wall paper and painted walls in a 2 story foyer. (his wife Monica cuts paint like no one I have ever known). 4. Removed and painted shutters and rebuilt several to avoid the cost of having custom wooden shutters made. (Very impressive work) 5. Removed a set of brick steps and replaced with new, "fake" wood steps, installed a railing. Rebuilt steps in my garage and installed a handrail. 6. Removed chipped paint and touched up white trim on the exterior ( house has 20 windows on the front). 7. Hung a double rear door that was custom made and has windows above it. 8. Built columns, hung a swing, painted porch ceiling... I have probably forgotten some projects. He has a wonderful work ethic and is pleasant. I could include photos, but I do not know how to do that!

We had an existing deck converted to a screened porch. The plan was exactly what we were looking for and was executed very well. David was superb in giving our project his personal attention, and made sure that everything was done to our satisfaction. I recommend Richmond Rebuilders highly and will not hesitate to engage them again!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
