My job included a tree removal, a tree trimming, and grinding a few stumps. They did an extremely good job and were very efficient doing the work and cleaning up afterwards. Everybody was very friendly and explained what was going on. The only negative would be that scheduling took a bit of back and forth since I have a fairly full schedule.

Steven pressure-washed my home, and deck. The deck was a mess so he came back a second day to be sure it was cleaned up. He also pitched in and helped me with and overgrown rose and holly by pruning it out and coming back a third day to take away the brush pile. This man is willing and cooperative. I paid him extra for the extra work but was glad to do it. He will be helping me with more fall clean-up in a few weeks. I am delighted to have him serve me and hope he continues with the great work.

From start to finish I was 110% satisfied with Stumpbusters Tree Service. Their cost was very competitive. Their workers were very courteous and professional and the owner Steve Childress was very responsive to all questions. They were hired to remove three large trees which they cut down, ground the stumps and hauled away all excess mulch. They arrived on time and completed the job ahead of time. I will use them for any tree cutting needs I may have in the future and I would highly recommend them to anyone needing tree removal services.

Eastrige Lawns and Landscapes did a great job at my house. They did a big spring clean up of old leaves in all mulch beds, mowed the lawn, edged, pruned all shrubs and trimmed dead out of my ornamental trees. My place looks amazing!

All I can say about this company is WOW!!!! I have never been more impressed with a company I have hired. We had some construction waste to get rid of in Sandbridge in Virginia Beach. Sunnyside was the first to respond, but when I saw they are from Smithfield, VA I contacted another company since we are 1 1/2 hours away. Believe it or not, they contacted me and said they would be here in a few hours. Sure enough, they came and were the most pleasant guys and worked very quickly to remove our junk. I was amazed at the positive attitudes and work ethics, so I have already hired them again to come cut down a tree! Literally, don't get any other quotes, go with Sunnyside Landscaping for anything you need done around your house! Truly honest guys that work hard.

They came the same day, were polite, and did exceptional work. I marveled at a professional who knows how to use a track loader. The tree never stood a chance, finished yard is clean and ready for grass to grow.

Joe did a great job on my yard. I deducted a star because the price he quoted me was not what was charged and he did not remove the leaves as agreed prior to him coming out. I might consider using him again as I liked the work but I would recommend better quotes.

Not prepared to remove cuttings. Cut too much...tree may not survive. This might be a better company for tree removal not trimming. They cleaned up the site well.

Rodney & Zach redid 2 plantings for me, making a rock border and mulching around my flowers and bushes to make one large area so I do not have to mow around all the individual plantings. They did the same around my 8 tree border for the same reason but without rocks. It looks very nice. They gave me a quote, a time, came on time, did the job and even sprayed the weeds in my driveway as a bonus. Good job, very nice. They are going to do my mowing, too, when the weather gets hot.

Working with Michael has been wonderful. He did a beautiful job on our 1910 rowhouse yard both front and back! Both yards were very overgrown and in disrepair and he put his magic to work and now we are the envy of the street! He handled everything from removal of old trees, clean-up, design and installation.

Messaged me immediately after I posted the job, and came by a couple of hours later. Gave me a bid that was nearly 1/3 what I paid last year for leaf removal and started getting the job done on the spot. Took him just over an hour and did exactly what I wanted. I will definitely use them in the future.

Super impressed with communication of scheduling and with the work. Very reasonably priced - they raked our front yard, bagged leaves and even those annoying tree gum balls...14 bags worth in a little over two hours, for about $60. Definitely recommend and will be using again!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

    • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
    • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.

How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

When you’re ready to have a tree on your property come down, it’s time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.

Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home — the roots were damaging the home’s foundation — cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

How much does it cost to cut down a massive tree?

If you have to remove a big, beautiful tree from your property, you’ll definitely need an arborist. Cutting down a massive tree without the proper tools or training can lead to major property damage or injury. A huge tree may need to be removed if it is diseased or dying and poses a safety risk, has suffered a blow from a storm and isn’t safe, or is growing into your home, your home’s foundation, your septic system, or your power lines. Removal costs for such large trees will depend on the tree’s height, diameter, and relative safety and accessibility, as well as whether you also need the felled tree and stump removed. The bare minimum for removal of a tree over 75 or 80 feet would be $1,000. This may not include tree quartering and removal or stump grinding. Stump grinding ranges on average from $2 to $4 per inch of the stump’s diameter. There is no set price as each situation is unique, so it’s always best to have an arborist give you a quote and detail exactly which services are included in the price.
