Matt responded quickly and set up our work plan the next day. He was clear about what would be included and the cost. Matt worked nonstop with precision and care. When we ran short of bathroom floor tile, he shifted focus to our second tile project so we could find the needed material. He completed it and then returned to project #1 The tile lines were straight and smoothly grouted. He cleaned up his work space and removed his tools after each stage of the projects. We will hire him again for a kitchen back splash tile project once we are at that stage. The price was fair.

Eugene is a professional who values quality. We had his company install a new wall and door frame in our basement and it turned out great. A family member who regularly stays with us initially didn't notice the additions because they were so seamless! We plan to use Eugene's services again.

Josette, was fast, responsive and accurate. I had a real quick turn around project of a total house renovation in Washington DC and she managed to deliver everything within my time frame which was just about two weeks, with everything looking fabulous. She was able to respond pretty much any time of the day ( wow!) Well worth the money. and a joy to work with.

Chun-Fa helped us design our next kitchen. He listened to our ideas and help translate them into a design that reflected what was most important to us. Plans and drawings were very detailed and he helped us withe some baseline pricing at manufacturers and gave us a good education on how to proceed. A good experience all around.

I hired Mr. Jett of RCJ Contracting to remove and dispose of some furniture from my home. With very little notice he arrived at my home exactly when he said he would. His team removed everything very quickly and professionally. When I discovered that he is a very experienced contractor, I asked him for a quote to tear down and rebuild an old shed. He gave me a very good quote and we plan on doing more business in the future.

The team at Winthorpe Design & Build has helped me renovate my entire house over a period of three and a half years. With their help and Krag’s excellent design ideas, we came up with a creative plan for my home and broke it down into three phases. They worked with me through the entire project to help tweek and improve the overall project. I realize that the construction process isn’t always smooth, but when issues or questions would come up, they would discuss my options with me and resolve them quickly. I could not be happier with the final project, it turned out exactly as I dreamed. The Winthorpe team is made up of true professionals and I would not hesitate to recommend them. Petar designed a beautiful two-story (1500 sq. ft.) addition for my house in the Pimmit Hills neighborhood, near Tyson's corner. The design included a beautiful second floor deck. His rate was much lower than other architects in the area. He also provided me with a list of references (former clients) who all recommended his services. He also helped me get the appropriate permits from the county and helped me find a builder to build based on his plans. I highly recommend Petar.

Chuck has done 2 projects for me and my husband. The first was an 750 square foot addition to my home. And the second was finishing off my basement. He went above and beyond. He save me a lot of money on an architect by drawing up the plans for free. He also beat all the other contractors estimates by 10% I would highly recommend

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.
