I also have two licensed ejudicator coaches with the International Dance Teachers Association and the National Dance Council of America. I love the affect that dancing has on people. My girlfriend loves to dance. She's fantastic freestyling (just shaking it with the beat) but she also loves to structure dance (ballroom, rhythm, latin) and THAT is where I had a problem. I could freestyle with the best of them, but when it came to actually dancing a 'real' dance step, I was completely lost and when I tried, I felt that everyone was watching and well, so much for my self confidence. So instead of playing it off like Mr. Macho, I searched for a local studio and was fortunate to find Amy. When I called, she answered the phone and all of my questions. She is a fantastic person and a wonderful instructor. She was able to take my two left feet (when it came to structured dancing) and turn me into a confident dance partner for my girlfriend. My girlfriend and I love East Coast Swing, which can be used at most clubs, parties, summer events like Port Warwick, The River Walk in Yorktown and of course, at Amy's Friday night socials and her themed parties. Fear not, because your dancing concern will be resolved and you will become a confident dancer. No more 'wish I could', no more standing back and watching 'that guy' dance and all the ladies drooling, no more 'hiding in the shadows' - this is YOUR time! No only will you gain a greater sense of self confidence, but you will also get great exercise and cardio. Not to mention that you will meet other folks who enjoy to dance. Yes, I was nervous at my first lesson - just like riding a roller coaster. But once I 'took the plunge' I've been enjoying the ride ever since. BTW I started to take lessons two years ago, when I was 43. I just wish I started when I was 23.

Amy's Dance Studio is a landmark as far as I am concerned. Wherever her studio may be located, that town will benefit immensely by her presence. She is a professional instructor who teaches people to have a better quality of life by dancing. Dancing is a physical and mental exercise that benefits all ages. It provides confidence, dexterity, challenges the mind and body and provides people with an outlet to make changes in their lives. Ballroom dancing has become an event people admire, envy, and want to learn. I cannot say enough about Amy Hontos and her dedication, professional manner, abilty to teach so that the other can learn by her methods and teach in a way the other understands. Amy Hontos is by far the best instructor I have had for my ballroom dancing. Any city or town she is teaching in should welcome her with open arms and a go.odd posture and frame as expected in ballroom dancing.

My wife is a fantastic dancer, she can learn any style of dance within a few lessons. I, on the other hand, require persistent and gentle teachers to learn a new a dance. Amy's Dance studio is the right place to learn how to dance in an atmosphere of gentle encouragement and very competent instruction. The professional instructors appreciate that you have taken the time to place yourself in thier competent hands. They don't judge, they teach, they don't discourage, they lead by example. It is their goal to make sure your time and efffort leads you to feel complete confidence in your ability to learn the basics of dance. Once they have guided you to a new found confidence, they begin to help you build an enduring love of dance. As you progress to learn the more intricate dance steps you will find yourself moving on the dance floor like an old pro and the envy of all your friends.

Having spent the better part of a year and a half learning only an eight count swing, trying my hand a ballroom was at first rather difficult, despite Amy telling me I was a natural, however through Amy's patience I have since become reasonably proficient with multiple styles of ballroom. I still consider myself more a swing dancer, but have begun incorporating leads for hustle, cha-cha, salsa, and rumba into my swing dance and as a result have become quite a popular partner at the swing club I attend on Thursday nights. I know I have found something I can do for the rest of my life, I regret not starting ballroom when I arrived in Hampton Roads eight years ago. Yes, while there is the social aspect of dancing for fun and recreation you cannot overlook the health benefits as well as confidence and pride that come as a result of learning how to dance. I am by no means an expert but with time, patience, and a little guidance from Amy, I have no doubt at some point I'll be just like the cast of "Dancing With The Stars."

My husband had always wanted to take ballroom dance lessons. One day while shopping in City Center, he walked into Amy’s Dance Studio and inquired about lessons. Amy discussed the health and social benefits of learning to dance and offered my husband a free lesson. My husband was thrilled and gladly accepted the offer. The hard part however, was how to convince me to take the dance lesson with him. Reluctantly, I agreed and to my amazement, we learned the basic steps to the swing in 30 minutes! The lesson was so fun and we couldn’t wait to take more lessons. There are so many things I love about Amy’s Dance Studio. To name a few, Amy is very patient and I chuckle over how she handles my husband, who is free-spirited and wants to learn everything “now”. Sometimes he gets ahead of himself and Amy has to literally pull him back in line; she does it in such a fun way. I have my problems too; sometimes I ask too many questions but Amy reassures me by saying, “too much analysis causes paralysis.” She never misses anything and sometimes my husband and I joke that she has “surround vision”. She sees everything, she is so helpful, and her love for dancing shows greatly. For Amy, it’s not just a job, it’s a true love and joy. Also, I admire that Rita, Amy’s daughter has literally followed in her mother’s footsteps. She has been dancing since the age of three and now at age sixteen, dances like a professional. Rita is very knowledgeable of so many dances and often demonstrates new dances with her mother. Another added attraction is the Friday night socials. Rita often leads the line dances during this time. Another valuable asset to Amy’s dance studio is Chelsea, who is a student at CNU. She is majoring in theatre and dance, works at the studio, and loves it. Chelsea welcomes all newcomers with exuberant joy and excitement; on Friday nights, she invites the newcomers to dance with her so they may become comfortable and more familiar with ballroom dancing. Chelsea is very dedicated and is available to assist at all times. As an added attraction, there is Matt, a student at Amy’s Studio. Matt loves to practice dancing and has progressed to advanced levels in most dances. So ladies get ready… Matt may ask you to dance! If you are new in the studio, don’t be shy because Matt will help and guide you on the dance floor during open dance. Matt is very encouraging and If you happen to step on his foot, it’s ok… I’ve done it several times. Lastly, the dance studio host parties on most holidays which are fun and enjoyable. Also, there are other informative social events such as wine tasting with different wines and cheeses from around the world. I would definitely recommend trying the group classes or private lessons. Hey, what do you have to lose except two left feet? Jackie, Hampton, VA
