My husband and I decided to get married rather quickly and only had 13 days to pull together all the details. Julie at Mermaid Catering was one of the first caterers to respond to my request for a quote. After exchanging a few messages via the Thumbtack site, Julie had a good idea of the type of food items we wanted and was very prompt in responding with a great menu and great price quote. We worked with Julie to secure a bartender. We supplied all the alcohol and Mermaid Catering supplied all the mixers, plates, plastic glasses, etc. The food was delicious, fresh and beautifully presented. Julie was fun and easy to work with, she was prompt getting back to me and arrived at our wedding with ample time to set up. Julie, you did a GREAT job, the food was delicious and the presentation beautiful. Thank you for working with me under such time restraints. We received many compliments on the food and presentation. Thank you SO much for helping to make our wedding perfect!

Ted catered an after wedding brunch in my home for about 40 people. I can't describe how pleased I was with the whole experience. The food was plentiful and delicious! Ted made omelettes to order on my stove for each guest. What delicious entertainment! Fabulous French toast casserole, celestial crepes with strawberries and cream, the list goes on and on. All served up by his lovely wife and her lovely assistant. Then they cleaned up my kitchen better than it was when they got there. I am VERY glad I selected them to help me with such an important event. Lorraine B.

We hired Brandon as a personal chef for my wife's 50th birthday party. He was extremely helpful in putting together the menu, flexible in working with our choices, and very cost-effective. He and Ashley did a great job with setup, presentation, communication, and cleanup. The food was fantastic, from the appetizers (crab cakes in Cajun remoulade and summer spinach salad) to the entrees (fresh rockfish in a lemon dill cream sauce and steak with a red wine mushroom reduction) and the delicious chocolate cake. My wife and many of our friends are "foodies", and Brandon's meal earned an ovation from our group. Well done, and thanks for making my wife's special day extra special!

Jason and his team provided the perfect food for my big day! I got compliments on the BBQ food even from vegetarians! Everything was wonderful and he went above and beyond what I initially planned. From the cocktail hour to a bartender to the amazing dinner to ice cream sundaes, he and his team made this day truly special for us! The groom and I couldn't wait to get back to the hotel for leftovers!!!

We decided to plan ahead and order for Friday since we knew we were going to be busy and not able to cook. We ordered the family size portion of steak bites, baked potatoes with sour cream and chives, and cabbage with carrots and onions. The meal was absolutely delicious. The steak bites were very tender and seasoned just right as well as the cabbage and baked potato. My only regret is getting home late to enjoy it!!! Thank you April's Essence for making our Friday meal perfect.

The chicken and pulled pork platters I had was nothing but the Truth!! What topped everything off was the Blazing Fries with the Pulled Pork on them along with the jalapenos and sour cream. I ate them while driving lol. It was more than I could handle but by three red lights I devoured them !! The quality of food is definitely worth the experience!!! No need for fast food while Blazin' Goats is in town..

I contacted Alyse about in-home cooking for a special occasion and throughout the initial consultations whether it was via email, text, or voice, she was always prompt, clear, and had great follow through. We planned the surprise event for a group of ten people and when a last-minute change occurred, she easily accommodated a menu for three of the ten individuals who didn't eat seafood. For a group this size, she brought some help, and things went off without a hitch! Alyse was great with the meal planning, cost estimation, shopping, preparation, cooking, and post event clean-up. She started with homemade garlic biscuits and a herb butter that were marvelous! This served as a bit of an appetizer while the meal was being prepared. The first course was shrimp and grits, the second course was a Seafood Etouffee, and for desert, a Vanilla Bean Creme Brulee paired with Bourbon and Pecan Ice Cream. SLURP!! We really enjoyed the conversations with her and she and her assistant made the evening very memorable, certainly enjoyable, and tasty ! In case you're asking yourself the critical tell-tale question, Would he hire her again?, The answer is a resounding yes!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

How much should catering cost per person?

Catering prices can range from about $10 per guest on the low end to $150 or more per person on the high end. Catering costs represent the quality of food, presentation, variety, ingredients and service. But catering prices are more than the cost to cook the food that will be at your party; they also include the cost for the company to do business. Here is a simple breakdown of catering prices:

      • Menu: The food you serve your guests will directly affect the price per person. Organic ingredients, complex recipes, elaborate presentations, or high-ticket items like lobster or filet mignon all add to the cost.
      • Service: Buffet, family style, plated dinners — how you serve the food affects the cost per person. For example, a true plated meal can cost about twice the price of a staff-assisted buffet because of staffing costs. Hiring waiters, bartenders and cleanup crew will all be calculated into the per-person catering price.
      • Drinks: Providing beverages and alcoholic drinks for guests greatly increases your catering budget. Hosting an open bar can cost as much per person as the meal.
      • Rentals: Seating, plates, glassware, etc., will all have an effect on the cost per person for catering. For example, a plastic conference table that seats 10 costs about $6 to rent on average, while a wooden farmhouse table is about $80 to rent on average.
      • Business costs: Any catering cost will also include the cost for the company to do business such as insurance, employee wages, commercial kitchen space and more.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
