Mr. Tan and his crew completed multiple home repairs including replacing a main post and railings on our front porch, replacing our exterior kitchen door as well as replacing the frame on our basement door. He also replaced three faucets and patched a bedroom ceiling impacted by water damage. His team was prompt, professional and completed all of my repairs in one day. I will definitely use him again and recommend him to others.

My deck furniture looks brand new. Chris did an excellent job power washing my driveway, fence, and deck furniture. He also cut back some shrubbery, that really enhanced the area around the back of my house. I have already referred three of my friends to use his services, and definitely plan on calling him again to do more extensive work inside my home.

Highly recommend! Ramone and Jimmy power washed our house exterior; power washed, sealed our deck and driveway, fixed some door trims, replace and painted some moldings. Ramone had to go through several places to find the molding with the right width. They went through several times to make sure the deck was clean. They work hard and no complain. Also they are very friendly. We will definitely do business with them again.

Met Keith and received an estimate and Keith installed 3 gates as requested and did a great job on the fence and the gates. It has never looked better. I would definitely recommend Foster Construction to anyone looking to have fence or deck work done.

I would highly recommend Rae's Masonry for a project at your home or business.  When I called about an estimate,  Mr. Rae personally came to my home to assist me in designing my project, which consisted of repairing/replacing the bricks and slate on my front porch; building new steps and a walkway; and putting cobblestone pavers aside my driveway.  His estimate was very reasonable; which helped me stay within my project budget.  My neighbors were impressed by the craftsmanship and speed of his workers' performance. The brick masons were professional and and courteous by keeping the onsite materials organized and cleaned up their work area. They used quality materials that will keep my home looking beautiful for years to come. Masonry construction may be a lost art form to some,  but i believe it adds a classic, authentic feel to a home. Masonry unequivocally is the best choice for any home because it never goes out of style.  When I visited Shade and Wise Brick Company to choose my bricks, the representatives spoke highly of my contractor and said that Rae's Masonry would do a great job on my project. This gave me an extra comfort that this company would do a great job! Give Rae's Masonry a chance to turn your vision into reality!

I called him to repair my gate and it turns out it was broken beyond repair. He built a new one! It cost me very little compared to what I thought I'd have to pay. He's the best!

Curtis installed a vinyl fence with one gate in our backyard. He also built us a shed from scratch. His prices were very affordable compared to other contractors we had talked. We found Curtis to be very professional and experienced. The fence took only two days to install and the shed about a day. Curtis is well knowledgeable about his job and he would advise us what to do. Originally, we wanted to buy the DIY sheds from the store, but he advised us to build one from the scratch. The price for material and labor was great, but even better the quality of shed is magnificent. It will definitely last forever. He also saved us a lot money when we were buying the materials because he was able to get discount. We are glad to know him and we will keep the relationship going. I would definitely recommend Curtis without a second thought. We have been getting so many compliments on our new fence and shed.

Jason did a great job renovating our deck. He was perceptive and let us know when he found areas that were unstable. He did a wonderful job replacing all of our deck boards, steps, and rail tops, as well as adding more pickets to bring them up to code and adding a sturdy gate to keep our toddler safe from the steps. He finished the job quickly and the estimates we were quoted were pretty spot on for what we paid in the end. He is also a very nice person and I look forward to using him for other projects down the road.

We asked Brandon to mow our grass and mulch some bushes and our garden. He did a fantastic job, including weed-whacking and edging our driveway with prices that beat the competition.

Oscar and the Williamsburg Construction Landscaping Company are really good. We had to wait for them a couple of weeks to start because they had other projects, but Oscar communicated that with us from the very beginning and really did an amazing job on our yard (in a timely manner) once they started here. He came with CREATIVE ideas, which we needed, and he went above and beyond what we expected. Before they finished, we asked him to do another couple of jobs like installing a railing for the front steps and screening-in our back porch and he was willing and able to help us. Such a talented group of guys! Within about a week, we finally have a nice front lawn/driveway and finished brick patio that we've been trying to get finished for 2 years! We'd recommend him to any one- big or small jobs.

Quality Handyman Services (QHS) did an excellent job remodeling my kitchen and adding a half bathroom downstairs. My house was built in 1918 so there were a few surprises along the way but Jeremiah didn’t skip a beat. He was able to do all of the work himself with the exception of the electrical wiring update necessary. Jeremiah updated plumbing and ran new for the new location of the dishwasher and the new bathroom. He also installed all of the new plumbing fixtures in both the bathroom and kitchen including the garbage disposal. Jeremiah did all of the demo and removed all of the debris. He did everything from replacing rotten floor joists to taking out a support wall and building a new support beam to open the kitchen up to the dining room. He put in hardwood floors, framed an alcove for the refrigerator and a utility closet/pantry. I formerly had to keep my pantry items in the closet that housed the washer/dryer. He moved the w/d upstairs and when I saw how big the closet actually was, I asked if he could turn it into a bathroom. He did it! No more climbing the stairs 4-5 times a day to use the bathroom!!! I also had him install new cabinets and all new appliances including an over-the-range microwave that required the exterior wall to be opened to vent to the outside. He moved and removed two cast iron radiators, installed a new sliding glass door to my patio, exposed the original brick to make a backsplash, built a support wall for a bar looking into the new kitchen from the dining room. I had new lights, switches and outlets installed too. It was a huge undertaking and Jeremiah made it as painless as possible. I am having QHS replace my porch light, repair my gate and build a cover over my back porch this summer! I highly recommend QHS. You can’t beat their prices! Sincerely, Amy Owens (804) 938-1277

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
