I have worked with many "handymen", contractors, builders in Richmond and Tony Tan, by far, has been the most responsive and skilled of all of them. I completely recommend him and will definitely use his services again. He made a multitude of repairs on a rental property to get ready for a new tenant as well as a property going to sale in just a few days.

John and his guys did a great job. Arrived when promised, installed and repaired duct work as needed and cleaned up before they left. I could not have asked for a better experience. Price was way below what I was quoted by other competitors and his knowledge far exceeded anyone else I spoke with. You will not go wrong using Atlantic Coast Contractors for your HVAC needs.

John's service was outstanding. He mounted a ceiling fan and he mounted my T.V. and hid all wires along with the cable box and DVD box. He was on time, professional and very knowledgeable. His rates were very competitive and I would definitely recommend his services to anyone looking for a great contractor.

Jeff gave outstanding customer services and workmanship. We needed 2 heat pumps and air handlers. Jeff gave us a very competitive quote, fit us into a very hectic schedule (since we were without heat), made some extra improvements not listed and worked late to get the job finished. We will eventually need our third unit replaced and will absolutely call Jeff again. I highly recommend JDM for any HVAC needs you have.

Jason Bond was professional and honest throughout the entire process, from bid to completion of job. Other contractors tried to have us replace items that were fixable at half the cost. Highly recommend.

Chris and his team were prompt, courteous and they did not try to oversell their products or services. Very professional in appearance and their workmanship was spot on. They explained what was wrong with our cooling system in great detail, keeping it simple to allow us to understand what needed to be replaced and why. Their pricing was competitive and slightly lower than other quotes that we received. Overall, this was the best service we have received from a contractor in meeting our needs for numerous projects. When use them again, when I get ready to replace my heating system.

I had a small job - installation of a small window AC unit - other contractors and handymen would not take the time to do. GPS cam out the day after I contacted them and did great work at a good price.

We had a Mechanical room that was just a storage area. I needed more room to prep food and store all my extra plates and serving peices. My dream was to have a Butlers Pantry that would suit my needs and Chris Fisher of Creative Design Homes did just that. He took my needs and turned them into the most wonderful room to work in, I have floor to ceiling cabinets to store extra large peices and my dessert glasses, which I have 13 shelves full of different sizes and shapes, all sit perfectly so I can take a tray of 8 or 12 glasses at one time. The upper & lower cabinets are also designed to meet all my needs. He built me a seperate closet to house other books, coffee urns etc.... We worked with Chris for approximately 2-3 months he was very professional he procured all permits nothing was done without permits and all was up and beyond code, time including waiting for cabinets to be made and special sink to come in, inspections to be done. He took the time and effort to make my work space set apart from others with attention to the tinest details. The people he brought into our home were true professionals they respected out home and took care not to damage anything. All in all it was a wonderful experience. Before Chris was finished we had another smaller project for him, I knew if I would have waited on this someone else would snatch him up, in my laundry room there was wasted space we designed a cabinet with pull out shelves for my pots which also go from floor to ceiling. He is a very respectful man with a big heart and wonderful ideas and he listens.... and creates the most beautiful rooms ... he is very methodical, his measurements are precise ... he may take a little more time but the end results you will not be disappointed, they are wonderful. I would recommend and use Creative Homes Design without hesitation.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.
