Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

What is considered a local move vs. a long-distance move?

Local moves are among the most common moves. Unlike a long-distance move, a local move is typically less than 50 miles and does not cross state lines. Generally, a local move only takes one day, and movers tend to charge by the hour.

The definition of a long-distance move may vary depending on the moving company. Generally, a long-distance considered to be any move of 400 miles or more. However, some say a long-distance move is over 50-100 miles.

Local Move

A move under 50 miles

Long-Distance Move

A move over 50-100 miles or over 400 miles; may also be called an “interstate move” or “out-of-state move”

Out-of-State Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “interstate move” or “long-distance move”

Interstate Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “out-of-state move” or “long-distance move”

Intrastate Move

A move that begins and ends in the same state, typically beyond 50 miles

Interstate moves require additional legal preparation and will incur additional costs for distance, the amount and weight of your items, the preparation required and various other factors. Moving companies tend to do an initial weighing of the truck, which you should be present for.

A move that crosses state lines is considered an interstate move or an out-of-state move. Contrast this with an intrastate move, which begins and ends in the same state, but is typically above 50 miles.

To determine whether your move is local or long-distance, contact the best movers in your area.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

Is it cheaper to move your stuff or buy new stuff?

It often makes more financial sense to buy new stuff when you have the chance to sell furniture to offset the cost. The cost of moving your current furniture can sometimes be more than buying new things, particularly if the furniture is large or cumbersome to move. You can sell furniture online, or make a furniture donation and deduct it from your taxes (if it qualifies as a charitable contribution). Some places near you may even offer free furniture pickup when you choose to donate.

If you have valuable furniture that would be costly to replace, however, it may be cheaper to move them. To find out which option is best for you, contact professional movers in your area to receive quotes and estimates.

Lori and Cory were both responsive and professional. One of the movers was unsure about what he was doing, but the other mover was kind and helpful. The whole process was completed quickly and efficiently.

I was told on the phone that they could move my golf cart and when they arrived they were not able to move it and I was not compensated for the additional expense that I had to incur to have it moved. They also brought a small truck and had to make two trips, which costed more money for the job. I would not use them again.

This was a great experience. The team came in and went straight to work. Discussed the initial plan and they went to work. Took great care of very delicate items (TVs, China Cabinet, mirrors) no scratches. Moved everything exactly as instructed. Definitely recommend this team again with any of my moves and for any friends in need of a local move. Thank you Thumbtack!

Provide workers who are not high under the influence of marijuana. Once I informed the owner via phone conversation, he should have come and seen first hand and replaced these workers. We hired them to move my daughters belongings from her apartment to storage. We were going to hire them again in June to move everything from storage to Memphis, TN. Due to their lack of performance and professionalism and not adequately explaining the fee. They didn’t come out prior to the move and gift an estimate so the move took longer and cost more than they quoted. We will not be using them again. I wouldn’t hire them to move my trash from inside my house to the curb!!!

I used their service yesterday to move staging furniture from my rental property with less than a 24 hour notice. Four movers arrived promptly; they are hard workers and very professional. Will use again for my other rental properties.

These guys are FANTASTIC. I called another company they didn't answer. Called this company and was scheduled an appointment for Sunday. I was informed that the appointment would be between 3 and 4 pm. I received a call right at 3pm on the dot that they were about an hour a way. 4pm on the dot they were here! I didn't have much stuff to move but the few items I did were very heavy. I had eight pieces of furniture they moved it all in less than 30 minutes to my pod! They were great about moving my stuff and took the utmost care in handling. They were also very polite. I don't think I've ever come across a moving company with customer service orientation in mind. I will definitely contact them again. Also one more thing I was contacted the day prior on Saturday to confirm my Sunday appointment. I was told I needed to print out a sheet for them to sign. Being how my stuff was packed I inquired if it would be possible for the movers to bring a hard copy for me to sign. They did. I know to some it may not seem like much but a little courtesy goes along way and it saved me a 45 minute trip to the store. Anyway highly recommended!

The guys arrived about 15 minutes early. They checked the scene out and it turned out I had alot more to move than originally expected. They were fast, professional, and very very polite. I am so grateful for them because without them I am completely unsure how my move would have been possible. Although all of my belongings would not fit on their truck, as it just was too much junk, I will rehire them for rest of my items!!! Absolutely amazing!!!!

Although they ran late getting to my place in both cities, once they got there, there was no time wasted. I appreciate Carlton and Jermaine working just as hard in the rain as they did in the sunshine, it was a doozie of a move and I will definitely be using them again!

Was disappointed with the experience. Was scheduled for arrival between 9-10 am and didn’t arrive until 1:30 pm. I witnessed my leather couch standing on end which resulted in an abrasion and tear. When they opened the roll up door of the moving truck my rolling toolbox had fallen over and tools fell out. Two drawers do not operate now. While my dryer was being taken into the house they had a huge dent. They were able to knock it back out but there is a deep dent that can’t come out. My hard wood floor was scratched as my couch was pushed across and I had to stop. I have a hole in the wall in the stairway from a corner of furniture being carried up. I was told prior to their late arrival that the remaining bill would be adjusted as the time delay caused me to reschedule other moving parts.

My guys showed up 45 minutes late and only 3 out of the 4 I requested ever came. Despite that, the guys were great and efficient. Got everything done and worked really hard. If the company was a bit more professional I’d hire again. Being on time is so important and if I won’t be getting what I’ve requested (4 guys) then I should have been notified prior to the day of my move.

I contacted this provider to schedule our June move. I was sure to enter our current address as well as our new address. I received the following response. Hello, thank you for contacting Leon Logistics! Our estimate is 200 USD for the first two hours and 85 USD for the next each additional hours. Price estimate includes 2 movers and 17' truck(larger truck available if needed). Services are included in estimate are travel from our facility to your address, furniture assemble/reassemble, protective padding and stretch wrapping. There is no other fee that our company will ask at the end of the day. Our company is fully licensed to operate in DMV area and our team members are chosen after training and screening process. All your belongings are insured by our company. Please give us a call or respond to this message to schedule your move. I contacted the provider again to schedule our move date after discussing the rate with my fiance and comparing against other providers. I RESENT the information already provided (name, addresses, email) at their request. I was then told that we would be subjected to an additional $100 travel fee which clearly goes against what I was initially informed. I let the provider know what I was initially told which was that there were no additional fees and that travel was included in this fee. I was then told this is an automated message and “we’re not traveling 130 miles for free.” I said no worries and thank you and suggested they include this disclaimer in their automated message so that customers can make a more informed decision and not waste their own time or the provider times as this information was provided nowhere in the quote I received. The next response I received was that I should not expect anyone to travel 130 miles for free (wonderful customer service guys!). Who in their right mind would expect anyone to travel anywhere for free?! Traveling over 130 miles for $100 is a good deal I'd say. The fee is not the issue. The issue lies in the fact that the initial quote specifically stated travel was included which help us make our decision to choose this provider and decline all others. If your “automated message” states travel is included in the quote YOU provided, then the customer is not expecting an additional fee related to travel. If you’re going to service areas outside of your 50 mile radius and require a fee for this, which is a company's right, then it only make sense to share that there WILL be a travel fee for any service provided outside of that radius which is all I suggested for future reference. Instead of receiving the feedback which was not delivered in nastiness by any means, you meet a potential customer with these types of responses. I wouldn’t recommend them animals migrating for the winter. UPDATE: Updating to share ALL correspondence between myself and the owner of this business to reflect the TRUTH. Which is, I never used foul language toward him as he insisted in his response to my review and to show his miniature level of professionalism and how disgusting he speaks to others. He has continued to harass me literally all day long because I left a poor, but HONEST, review reflecting my experience with him, which is my right. Photos don't lie (SEE BELOW), but people do. DO NOT HIRE THIS COMPANY.

This was the worst experience with a move we have ever encountered. We were scheduled for a certain day (Thursday), they called that morning and said they were having brake issues on the truck (totally understandable). They said it would take until the following day to get the part and have the truck repaired. The next day (Friday) they contacted us and said that they got the wrong part and because of the weather (snow) they wouldn’t be able to deliver our stuff until the following day (Saturday) at noon. We asked them for options to get our stuff delivered, they said they called around and couldn't find a truck to transfer our stuff to and get it delivered. WE found a truck in the meantime and called them back to see if we could come down and pick up our stuff and they REFUSED to release OUR stuff. TONY stated that they were already losing money on the job (not our fault)!! Meanwhile there were 3 of us that took 2 days off work, had to get a hotel for 2 nights because we had no beds or furniture to sleep on and had to eat out for 2-1/2 days. We lost money too!!! Then we asked if they would be discounting their fee because of the inconvenience. TONY told us NO, not even a little bit because it was an ACT OF GOD (I guess he meant the snow), which in our area, we didn’t even get any. The email we got from Linda stated that a ROUGH ESTIMATE would be between $1200 and $1500 (we have the email to verify). They said that was not true and that our quote was for the flat $1500. The only good thing we have to say is about the men that loaded and unloaded the truck. They were completely helpful and considerate and did a great job. We will NEVER use this company again – nor will we EVER recommend them to anyone in that area.
