Erika is my go-to person for dog training and dog sitting! I have two rescue dogs, both adopted at the age of two with no training. Needless to say I needed help badly! Now my pups sit and wait to go in and out of doors, and they will do most anything for a treat. It's also nice to be able to go out of town and not have to worry about my fur babies! She's the only one I trust with them (and also to stay at my home with them), and she sends me plenty of updates while I'm gone.

Ali has cared for my 4-legged babies on several occasions. She is very professional, reliable, flexible, and her love for animals is very apparent. She's come to my house during the day to let my dogs out or take them to the park while I'm at work. And just recently she watched my dogs for a weekend while I was away and even came to my home to check on my cats. It is SO comforting knowing that my pets are in such great care when I'm away. I get several updates and photos of my babies having fun when I'm gone. I'm pretty sure this last time they didn't even want to go home! I would recommend Ali's services to anyone looking for reliable, quality, and loving care for their furbabies.

This is the first time I've needed an overnight sitter for my three cats, two of whom are seniors (both 16 years old) with health issues. One of them is losing her eyesight and has started becoming upset and confused during the night, so a once-a-day visit isn't an option anymore when I have to travel. I was nervous about this, both for the animals having a stranger in the house all night, and for the sitter, knowing he or she would be awakened in the night by my confused cat. When I found Stable Hands, I was extremely pleased and happy when they came together to meet me and my babies quickly, and shocked when all three walked right up to both of them. I was immediately impressed that Lara and David both knew exactly how to handle the introductions the cats were making, too. I was comforted that they're licensed, bonded and very experienced. This was a short trip for two nights, and I couldn't be happier or more relieved to now feel confident that whenever I do travel, I have David and Lara to call. The cats were happy and relaxed when I got home, the house was immaculate, and David texted me each night with pictures to show me how well everyone was getting along. (My Maine Coon mix even reclined on the sofa with David -- photo evidence -- which is UNHEARD OF for her.) I couldn't be happier, and highly recommend them.

This was three cat and one house sitting. Returned after four nights to find the cats without any issues and totally indifferent to our return, a sign that they were each sufficiently indulged and taken care of in the way they would have liked while we were gone. House was more immaculate than when we left it. Megan is thoroughly professional and friendly. Finding her will allow us to do more traveling with more peace of mind, a problem solved.

Hannah frequently watches my two year old cat, Mellie, and she has always been my number one choice for a pet sitter. She has excellent rates, is extremely friendly, and goes above and beyond to care for my cat. I trust her completely, as she has access to my home to pet sit while I am away for multiple day excursions. I would choose Hannah over a boarding place any day, as having Hannah come to my house and spend time with my cat relieves any worry I have when I go on vacation. She is also extremely professional, punctual, and responds quickly. If you'e looking for a pet sitter, pick Hannah!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is house sitting?

A house sitter watches your house while you are away for work or vacation, or if you have to be away for an extended period. House sitters can also provide pet-sitting services, staying in your home and caring for your pet while you are away. The house sitter can say overnight in your home while you’re gone, or stop by once a day to ensure everything is in order if your pet doesn’t need overnight supervision. Reptiles and most cats are just fine with daily visits and feeding.

House sitting provides major advantages to the homeowner. A regular presence in your house deters break-ins and theft. Home safety issues such as water leaks get noticed and dealt with right away, so you don’t come home to big problems. A house sitter can bring in your mail daily, care for your houseplants, and provide home safety and peace of mind.

How do I find a reliable house sitter?

House sitting can help keep your home safe and well cared for so you can be worry-free while you’re away for work or play. There are several steps you can take to make sure you hire a trustworthy house sitter and do your part to be a responsible host. One of the best ways to ensure a safe home is to hire a professional house sitter. Here are some key points to look for when hiring a house sitter:

    • Reviews and referrals: When searching for a house sitter, always read reviews. Previous experiences will indicate how the house sitter will care for your home while you’re away.
    • Contract: Sign a clearly written contract outlining services to be provided (e.g., mail in each day by 5 p.m.), the daily rate you are paying, and how long the services will be provided. You can also include any agreed-upon house rules in the written contract.
    • Your part: Leave important phone numbers (vet, emergency contact, etc.) and information on where to find emergency items like the circuit breaker and the fire extinguisher, and have a credit card on file with the veterinarian in case of emergencies if the house sitter is watching your pets.
