Miguel was very professional and did our roof repair even earlier that expected. He advised us of the condition of the roof ( our roof is about 13 years old, but winds have been hard on it). The work was done quickly. We will definitely use M & A in the future for other projects...

I knew this was the right company to hire to replace my roof just by talking to Mike Reedy on the phone, he explained to me that before he comes to give me an estimate on my roof that his company will be a slightly higher price than some of the others around the area. So i ask him why, his reply was because im gona do it right and if i touch it its gona be replaced, i dont cut corners and i dont reuse anything. I thought to myself thank god finally someone that has not lost the old ways of doing thing, finally someone that cares, someone that wants the best roof on my house as much as i do. Mike refuses to give you anything but the most superior product on the market and he will not even let his crew install anything else. This man went way above and beyond anything i ever expected, for one i was having problems with HOA of my community on the color of shingles i wanted to put on my house and believe it or not Mike Reedy went to next HOA board meeting to defend me and resolve the situation, i was completely amazed. He did everything from getting a dumpster delivered and picked up to going to get the permit to do the work, and going to the HOA meeting on his own time. I didn't' have to do anything and absolutely no headaches at all, and that piece of mind was completely priceless. They finished my roof and cleaned the after themselves, spotlessly, I couldn't even find so much as a nail on the ground after they left. I was amazed once again. All and all i would recommend this company to everyone, and for the slightly higher estimate of 350 mizzly bucks i got all that ive already listed with the highest quality product on the market installed with the best craftsmanship ive seen in a very long time with absolutely zero dollars in surprise charges. well single worth every penny.

I did my homework in planning the new siding and gutters for my house. I got 4 estimates and chose Ricky Shakallis. He answered all my questions and I had a lot of those, staying in constant contact throughout the project and his crew did an exceptional job on the installation. I couldn't have ask for a better or more experienced contractor. He definitely knows what he is doing. I would recommend him to anyone wanting beautiful siding, gutters or a new roof and someone who will take care of your home as if it was his own.

I contacted and interviewed 5 different roofing contractors to get estimates on replacing my 23 yr old roof, install trim wrap and soffets, and to remove and replace my gutters. After going over all the bids, I decided to go with Don Rafa. The owner, Rafael, listened to my concerns and answered all of my questions on multiple occasions. He was down to earth, and his prices were fair and within the price point for the amount of work I was looking to do. He was very accommodating and gave me recommendations on my particular roofing needs. After signing the contract, Don Rafa was accommodating to my schedule and started the roofing project on a date we agreed upon. The workers were friendly, professional and helpful, answering any additional questions that I had. They did a fantastic job in tearing off the old roof, replacing bad wood and installing GAF Timberline HD shingles, with GAF's Cobra underlayment and ridge vent system. They installed the roof per my contract and within two days. The roofers placed tarp down to protect my yard and cleaned up after they were done, they also used a magnet roller to pick up any stray nails. I am very pleased with the quality of the work!!! After the new roof was replaced, Don Rafa's roofers started the trim work making sure to remove and replace any bad wood. I have a fairly large home with a wrap around porch, so it took a couple of days to finish the trim. The new trim looks great and was professionally installed using quality caulked (OSI Quad) as required. Lastly, Rafael had a great gutter sub-contractor who was able to replace all of my gutters within a day. The gutters were seamless and manufactured at my home using a seamless gutter machine. They even placed an additional downspout (at my request) in an area that I previously had some problems with the amount of water coming off the roof. The new gutters are look great and were installed professionally. I highly recommend Don Rafa roofing for you roofing needs. Rafael was honest, intelligent and knowledgeable concerning roofing materials, shingle manufacturers and warranties, trim and gutter work. I am pleased to say Don Rafa was able to do all of this work within budget and on schedule. Thanks Rafael and Team!!! Dan McAdoo

My wife and I used this company back In September and was really impressed with the professionalism and quality work this company provided. With Amber answering our questions with the initial call , she was very friendly and also very knowledgeable. She gave us a price range for each service we asked about and set us up on the schedule to have the work performed. Marc and his employee came out and did a wonderful job cleaning our house roof, deck, and patio. Everything looks like new. I wish we would have called sooner. We will be telling our friends and neighbors about this company. Paul Sexton , Yorktown, Va

Very professional! Great worksmanship! The job they did on our roof was great. During any rain storm, my roof had several trouble areas that caused several trips in my attic to do patch jobs that wouldn't work. JB Design came through and replaced my entire roof, I now have no leaks or cracks anywhere. I dare anyone to come and try to find a flaw in their work..... you won't, trust me I tried! Next is my siding..... Thank you JB Design!

They came out quick to check a leak in my roof. He took his time to check everything in my attic and on the roof. He showed me where the leaks were coming through in the attic. Quote was reasonable. I was not happy when I made the appointment because they told me appointments were 2 weeks out because they were busy. They actually called me 2 days after I hired them that they could come out the next day and be done in 3 hours. Crew showed up on time and began working. They cleaned up when they were done and showed me pictures of the result. I was very pleased with their work. Would definitely hire again.

After getting 5 estimates on my roofing needs, 3 of those from Thumbtack, I chose New World Painting and Handyman to hire. Avel Nunez and his crew were great to work with from the first meeting to discuss my needs to the finished project. Avel, the owner of New World Painting and Handyman, thoroughly discussed step by step what he and his crew would do to complete the roof. He took the time to help me choose the perfect roof shingle type and color and also kept me informed of any problems that arose while completing the project and discussed additional costs that were needed to resolve the issues. Once the original shingles were taken off, large holes were identified in 6 pieces of plank boards and plywood; he replaced them all and charged me minimal; as a matter fact my final cost was still below the first estimates given by the other 4 companies. Due to unforeseen issues, the men had to work an additional 2-3 hours, but they did it without complaining because they wanted to complete the job in one day, as promised to me. After the job was completed, they properly cleaned up the scraps and nails from my yard and removed the dumpster used. The owner thanked me for given him and his company an opprtunity to do this job. I plan to use them to complete other home improvements, as well coming up. (Pics of roof attached.)

Rick did a long list of tasks at my house including installing new waterline and faucet on the front of my house. Installing a whole house antenna ..he added a couple of new outlets for my electrical needs..he installed a tv on the wall and placed the wires in the wall which included some construction and drywall repair and painting. At the same time he responded to a couple of emergency situation that arose at my house while he was working for me. A roof leak and a plumbing clog and overflow... He handled each of his tasks in a professional manner and gave me a reasonable price quote which he honored and the items I added as we went along were priced very reasonably ..I would highly recommend him for a job !

Tidewater Regional Contracting checked all of our boxes. As we live in Sandbridge, careful consideration was given to our choice of roofing contractors, as we are vulnerable to extreme weather conditions...especially high winds. As our roof was 17 years old, with many vents and many peaks, knowledge, experience, professionalism, great communication, quality work, and accessibility were key and Tidewater Regional Contracting delivered. We recommend them highly and would definitely use them again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why do I need to clean my roof?

Over time, algae, moss, lichen, dirt and even salt (if you’re near the ocean) can build up on your roof. These buildups can affect the look and function of your roof unless removed. The buildup of organic materials such as moss on a shingle roof can prevent water from sloughing off as it normally would. Trapped water can rot the roof or cause early deterioration of your shingles. Even if you don’t have a shingle roof, moss and lichen absorb water, and that wet material adds weight and stress to your roof — as well as providing a home for insects and other pests, and collecting dirt. For reflective, cool roofs that redirect heat away from the home, algae and moss growths can hamper their ability to deflect the sun, which can affect utility bills. Visually, moss, dirt and algae growths on a roof can have a negative effect on perceived home value and curb appeal. For example, black algae streaks on your roof may cause a potential homebuyer to assume that the roof might need repair or replacement, when it only needs to be cleaned.

Can a roof be cleaned?

Yes roofs can be cleaned, and yes, it’s a real thing. Roof cleaning may actually be a wise investment to prolong the life of your roof. Overgrowth of moss, grime, lichen or algae can all shorten the life of your roof. If you have black streaks growing on your roof, they are likely caused by gloeocapsa magma algae spores that have landed on your roof and taken up residence. Once the algae has grown into streaks, the organism has usually been growing for several months and it’s high time to have it removed. If you live in a rainy part of the country, such as the Pacific Northwest, there’s a good chance you’ll find moss growing on your roof at some point. The northern part of your roof, as well as any parts that remain shaded all day, will provide a wet, cool haven for moss to flourish. Unfortunately this water-absorbing moss can damage your shingle roof, leading to rot if not removed. Beyond roof health and function, a clean roof can boost your curb appeal and potentially boost your home’s resale value. The national average for roof cleaning costs ranges between $270 and $350, although prices can be higher depending on how large your roof is, how steep your roof is, and what type of cleaning is necessary. Typically pros use either a pressure wash or chemical wash (made with a concentrated bleach solution) to remove algae, lichen, moss and dirt.

What chemicals are used to clean roofs?

Roof cleaning is done to remove moss, lichen, algae, and buildup of other grime and dirt. There are several methods for roof cleaning, which can include a chemical soft wash, pressure washing, low-pressure washing and hand washing. When a chemical soft wash is used, a bleach mixture is sprayed onto the roof. The bleach-based solution is absorbed by the algae or moss, which dies from exposure to the chemical. The roof is then sprayed with a low-pressure rinse of water, which loosens the now-dead material, allowing it to slide off the roof.

For homeowners, the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association recommends a mixture of 50 percent laundry-strength liquid chlorine bleach and 50 percent water. Professional roof cleaning companies will use an industrial mixture that is still safe but may be more effective in eliminating algae and moss growths. Asphalt shingle roofs are the most common type of roof, but each roofing material will have its own cleaning needs, so it’s best to consult with your roofing pro before diving in. Don’t do it yourself unless you can safely navigate your roof, the chemicals and a sprayer system. When in doubt, leave it to the pros.

What is a standing seam metal roof?

A standing seam metal roof may be a strong, durable, safe choice when you’re considering metal roofing installation options. A standing seam refers to the raised seam where the sheet metal roofing panels join. Traditionally, shingles and roof panels lie flush to the roof, making them more prone to rust or penetration by water at their seams. In a standing seam metal roof, the raised (or standing) seams run vertically from the roof ridge to the eaves, with no horizontal seams. In addition, the fasteners joining the metal panels together are concealed, providing even fewer opportunities for water or moisture to build up. The cost to install a standing seam metal roof will depend on the type of metal you select, the size of your roof, and the cost of roofing labor in your region. Materials will play a major role in your metal roofing installation costs. If you select standard galvanized steel, the cost per square (100 square feet) might be in the $150-$300 range, while a high-end choice such as copper or zinc could be between $1,000 and $1,500 per square. Here is one example of cost:

  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.

Can a metal roof be installed over shingles?

Metal roofs are durable, environmentally friendly, safe and budget-friendly. If you’re considering an update, metal roofing installation doesn’t have to mean completely removing your old roof. In many cases, metal roofing can be installed over your existing shingles. Research building codes in your state, as many require that after two roofs have been installed, all roofing materials must be completely removed before a third roof can be put on. This protects your home’s structural integrity and your family’s safety. Carefully read contractor reviews and choose someone with extensive experience with metal roofing installation. One concern when installing metal over shingles is that over time, condensation can build on the shingles and cause the metal to rust. This will lead to rust around the panels, making them more likely to come loose in a storm. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000. The wide price range represents different roof sizes, different types of metal, and the cost of labor in different parts of the country — and can also include the cost of removing an old shingle roof prior to installing the metal. As a line item, the average cost of removing an old roof to prepare for installing a new roof, plus adding new roof decking, costs on average about $45-$75 per square (the pro roofer’s term for 100 square feet), depending on the pitch of the roof. Always make sure you have a clearly written contract and a warranty on both the labor and the metal.
