Sylvia is a true dog whisperer and she has saved our family many times. The first time I was almost in tears because my puppies were fighting all the time and I was afraid I might have to re-home one of them. She calmly told me that all I needed to do was learn how to be the pack leader. She was right! Once the dogs knew my husband and I were in charge, they no longer fought each other for dominance. The next time was when my husband was away in the army and I became too sick to take care of my dogs. My dogs are my babies and I'm so grateful that Sylvia was there to watch over them. She took care of them as if they were her own until I got better and my husband came home. They were so happy and healthy and vibrant when we picked them up. Sylvia has also taught me how to do service dog training with my dog, Ike. Sylvia loves all creatures, human or animal, and has a big heart. She especially reaches out to help veterans and the disabled. There is no one else I would trust more with my family, you can trust her with yours.

Martha was intuitive, kind and knowledgable. My pup is a work in progress, but she gave me the tools and encouragement to believe that our problems are solveable and that things aren't as bad as I had thought. I needed as much training as my dog did and look forward to our mutual progress and peace of mind.

Leashed Seattle is an excellent dog walking service. Robert comes to my apartment in Kirkland and walks my dog for 30 minutes. Sometimes I pay a bit more and her takes her to an off leash dog park for an hour. Robert is really easy to reach by cell and email. He always fits us into the schedule, even when I make changes the day before. The best part of his service, and probably what sets Leashed Seattle apart from others is the email I get after every walk/park session. It includes a map of distance covered, photos of the dog in action and customized notes. So happy I found them! There's also a discount if you buy a block of walks in advance.

We took our 18 month old put bull for training. Anne was very informative and helpful gave my wife and I tons of handouts to help us to continue our training at home between lessons and to continue now. Rusty when he first started his training couldn't even see a dog without getting anxious and start barking and lunging. Now after 4 weeks he will allow dogs to walk by withing about 6 feet without him even caring and we actually took him camping over labor day and the campsite on both sides of us had dogs and he didn't have one outburst. Also rusty now walks nice on a leash with us. If your dog as any behavioral issues or just want to add more training to your dog's repertoire than I highly suggest Anne. You won't find anyone more knowledgeable patient and also affordable than her. Thank you again Anne or and Kirby for putting up with Rusty'a nonsense

We are so happy that we found Wendy to help us with our 100 pound mastiff mix. Before we started training, our dog pulled us everywhere, was nervous around other dogs and people, and we were afraid to take her anywhere off leash because she never came when called. After completing our training, we have a completely new dog! I can't believe that she will heel beside me off leash even with other people and dogs around us! I'm so happy that we can finally trust our dog and give her the freedom she deserves. Thanks, Wendy! You're the best!

Patti is amazing! She gave me practical tips on training my dogs and gave me insight into how their minds work. She showed me processes to help me work with them and gave me hope that I will be able to train them properly. She saw my dogs as loving, sweet and good dogs - like I do! Even just 24 hrs later I see a marked difference in their listening and wanting to change direction! I have 2 mastiffs and needed someone to come to my home since it wasn't possible to take them both somewhere by myself for training and she was able to do that. Patti is kind and gentle and I am so thankful for her help! I would definitely recommend her to anyone.

We love Zoom Room! The staff are amazing, especially Olivia at the front desk! The owner Cheryl is truly a gifted dog trainer and an all-around awesome person. Zoom Room offers numerous classes and you will find no trainer more dedicated to you and your pup than Cheryl; she has taught me so much about being a good handler and my dog Xedo loves her. Xedo has excelled at Agility under her awesome direction and insight. Even now, while he is recovering from ACL surgery, Cheryl has been so awesome, checking on him and offering ideas and encouragement. Cheryl is going to help us build strength in his knee, by utilizing one of her class specialties, “Puplates”! Best of all Zoom Room is a community gathering place where like-minded, fun loving dog owners and their awesome pups can meet up; whether it’s for "Agility League Night" (a friendly competition for pups and their peeps!) or celebrating while playing games and enjoying lite fare. Xedo even had his 6th birthday party at Zoom Room! Boy was that fun!! We have so many favorite events at Zoom Room it's hard to name them all! Cheryl is so awesome at putting together parties to celebrate every new season, including holiday photos shoots for pups and their owners. There is no better training studio around! If you are looking for a great community to connect with while learning tons about training your dog and having lots of fun while doing it, look no further! Zoom Room is perfect!

We just had our consultation with Shawna about our dog's aggression issues. She had some great insight on what is causing the issues, and gave us some things to work on at home until our next session. After meeting with her, my husband and I are confident that she can help correct this behavior. I highly recommend Shawna to anyone looking for a calm, straight forward, and practical approach to dog training.

Our Lucy is quite sweet but also a very rambunctious Australian Cattle dog. This combined with her stubbornness and physical strength, she was out of control. Thankfully I found Alex. He is great! Right from the start he had Lucy following his commands. Lucy now sits / stays and comes when I call her. We are working on walking without pulling on the leash. It’s wonderful to see the changes with her. He loves dogs and they love him. I highly recommend Alex. I can’t say it enough, he is great!

Julie's knowledge and expertise were evident from the clear instructions she provided to me and the way she interacted with my Husky-Mal mix, Koda. Koda would go crazy whenever she encountered other dogs when we took our walks, so I sought Julie's help in finding ways to deal with those situations, as well as ways to help introduce her to known friendly dogs. She brought her dogs (Malamutes) to assess Koda's reactivity and we worked on exercises to divert her attention and to gradually approach and greet her dog in a more controlled manner. She also showed me how to prevent Koda from jumping up when greeting people and tips on training her to greet people politely. I've been practicing what I learned with Koda and her behavior has definitely improved. I'd recommend Julie/Learning 4 Life Dog Training to anyone looking for training and practical advice using positive reinforcement.

Awesome experience. I have an older dog who is getting more aggressive with strangers and she managed to win him over and one dog that is much younger and a total sweetheart. She successfully help me while I was on vacation and my husband and daughter works long and odd hours. We did not want to leave them created for too long. Angelica came in with a key and walked the dogs. I really loved her app, that shared with me pictures and their adventures together. I am very grateful for her help.

Jacqui was asked to jump into a very difficult situation and she was absolutely marvelous. I watched Jacqui train four dogs for a commercial shoot, in which, she had very little time to prepare and time was of the essence. It was a complete success! Jacqui has a confident demeanor and knows how to work with animals proficiently. With over 6 years of experience, I can't think of a better trainer for our commercial shoot. Jacqui is kind and respectful and was the lynchpin in ensuring the success of our shoot and ultimately our commercial spot. We could not have done it without her. If you need your dog trained, call her right now! You will not be disappointed. Thank you, Jacqui for all of your help! I will be calling you again, when my director tells me that our talent is a bunch of pooches. You rock!

I am 110% satisfied with Vivians care of my pets while I was on vacation! She was courteous, punctual, reliable, obviously knowledgeable and just a real sweetheart! My pups and I liked her immediately! She even got my "shy" dog to actually leave the yard and go for a walk! I haven't been able to get her to willingly do that! Thank you, Vivian! She sent me periodic status updates and pictures! When I got home she took time to "educate" me on some techniques for continuing the training she had done with my shy dog and she will be coming back for further training sessions! I am grateful I found Vivian and will highly recommend her to friends and family! Thank you Vivian from me and Autumn, and Summer, and Dinah!

We still call on her for any questions and concerns we have with our pets, and can't wait for her to house sit for us again :) Thanks Whit for all you do.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

      • What type of training methods do you use?
      • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
      • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

We have adopted a highly intellegent dog from a rescue. He appears to be a beagle/corgi mix but we're not sure of that until we do a DNA test. We have a family member who suffers from severe anxiety and PTSD and is already forming a strong connection with this puppy. We are hoping to be able to train the puppy in service and/or therapy techniques to help our family member.
