Jack, of All In Construction & Landscaping responded within minutes of me placing an invitation for a bid on a backyard fence. Within an hour both Jack and Forrest arrived to look over my needs and give quote for a fence installation, including a gate and removal and disposal of the existing fence. I liked their bid so contracted with them for a new fence. The installation took only 2 days and the fence is beautiful. They completed the fence while I was at work and when I arrived home they had removed all the old fence material, raked out the dirt from the posts installation, and cleaned up all excess material. I am very pleased with the quality of work and the beauty of the fence. Plus, Jack and Forrest were friendly, engaging and professional. I highly recommend All In Construction & Landscaping as I am a very satisfied customer.

Installed 2 digital porch lights in front and back porch with timers also a side yard motion light. We set a 2 day limit and we will have the job completed on Wed this week for a very fair and reasonable price. Much cheaper then the bigger companies and he even provided us with a shopping list of needed items to complete the job.

Dave and his crew did a number of projects for me (repairing lattice privacy patio fence, installing vents in storage shed, fixing a leaking gutter, pressure-washing white vinyl ranch fence around house, etc). I was very happy with the results and plan on using his services again for future projects.

We have had a very pleasant business experience with Jeff and Nancy Fullner, the owners of Small Job Industries. They are friendly, courteous and personable. Their rate was very reasonable. The two young men who did the exterior and window cleaning of the entire house, delivered prompt and excellent services. By the way, Jeff, in real person, is the closes Elvis-look-alike we have met, with his side-burn and the magnetic baritone voice. Sean and Luke did wonderful jobs in pressure washing our driveway and patio, gutters, sidings, and walkways. They also hand cleaned some moss spots on the roofs and apply Wet & Forget roof treatment. They are both energetic, courteous, and very professional in their manner and thoroughness. Sean also did excellent exterior and interior winder cleaning. We have unusually high ceiling, and he did the job efficiently. We wish we could give them more than five stars!

I hired John Crandell (aka Jack) to turn a small bedroom into a large walk-in closet. He had to remove the existing closet and entrance door in that room and insert a pocket door into the wall adjoining the Master bedroom to the new walk-in closet. He also installed 4 LED ceiling lights, moved my electric outlets, insulated my attic above the space, and painted the walls and ceiling. What impressed me the most was his knowledge of the job. His estimates were exact, even finding ways to save me money without sacrificing quality. He understood exactly what I wanted and what was needed to get the job done. He made several helpful suggestions. He went above and beyond to not just give me what I asked for, but to do things right to ensure the work lasts. For instance, re-insulating the attic above the space was his idea because it wasn't up to code and it would save me tons in heating and cooling costs. And after he installed the insulation I noticed a temperature difference immediately! The work was amazing! I had an interior designer look at the space before I hired Jack. After he had finished, I invited her back over for a second look. She was amazed, not only at how beautiful the space was, but also at the fact that he had done all that work in only a week. I told her what I paid and she said that was a really good deal. I've never heard of a construction project going so smoothly, but I actually have no complaints. In fact, I am hiring Jack for a few other projects I have on my to-do list.

Coast Contracting is just finishing up a bedroom / bath / roof deck addition to my home. Love the result which has included all the structural work from the foundation up. My building inspector said "They're doing a great job. You could park a truck on your roof deck if you could figure out how to get it up there." We had a few scheduling hiccups here and there but they're busy guys. They show up when they say they will show up and don't fool around with time or materials. They've also been very patient with this demanding homeowner and her innumerable outside-the-box last minute change orders.

I had Jonathan Balas from Balas Homes complete multiple projects in my home Spring/Summer 2016. I had three windows replaced, more than three drywall projects, a new bathroom fan installed, a long, wooden window sill replaced (that involved many precise measurements & cuts) and a roadside mailbox installed. Jonathan was absolutely fantastic to work with! The attention he places on communicating with the client is beyond any other I have had with a contractor or handyman. I would always receive a response to my emails within 24 hrs. Jonathan possesses the integrity that we all seek in a contractor. He is trustworthy, professional, experienced and competent. His attention to detail and doing quality work is without question, the best in the business. I assure you, Jonathan Balas and Balas Homes will be the best investment you can make in your future project.

We shopped around for Contractors to build a fence on our huge corner lot, to include an electric gate for our driveway. The reason we went with Budget Remodel and Restoration is because they are a small family owned business and we felt this team would be dedicated to our job in particular. They are competitive on pricing, professional and did a great job. (The job was done on time and even completed under budget) The General Contractor took the time with us to explain things in way that we would understand the logistics of the job. Would recommend again.

Job involved installation of a generator connection for the well pump, installation of a garage heater, and roof and gutter maintenance. Met with Jesse about the projects and within 2 days had an estimate. After accepting it, Jesse was here promptly at 8 am, a day or so later. All was completed in just a few days. Impressed with his electrician's skill and efficient work. Will definitely call on him when the next project comes around.

I have used Will's services for ten years and am very happy with his work, which has included installing cork, slate and travertine floors; installing a stone backsplash; installing three solar tube skylights; building a shed out of mostly recycled materials; building a fence; and numerous repairs. He guarantees and takes pride in his work, and I am in awe of his knowledge and expertise. Furthermore, Will is always reliable, courteous and easy to deal with, and his prices are reasonable. It is rare to find someone so honest and conscientious. I recommend Clarkwork without reservation.

I am delighted to share our extremely positive experience in selecting Ruhlr Renovation to do a major home makeover. My wife and I had a rather major home remodeling project, involving completely an extreme makeover of two bathrooms, plus installing hardwood floors, putting on a new front door, new interior doors throughout, new trim everywhere, removing a small fireplace and installing a much nicer fireplace on a different wall, and updating all the kitchen cabinets. We are thrilled with the results. For the first week after the project was completed, we felt like we were living in a fancy 5-star hotel. We are THRILLED with the results!! The entire crew was the definition of professional at all times, responding to any requests to tweak something with no complaints and always in a timely manner. The team of Ruhlr Renovation did top-quality work for a very fair price. We are thrilled with the results and so glad we selected them to do this very complicated project. We love our newly made-over home!

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

      • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
      • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
        • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
      • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

      What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

      • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
      • Toilet replacement: $75.
      • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
      • Faucet replacement: $125.
      • Garbage disposal: $75.

      Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
