Jarrod did a nice job mounting TV and sound bar in the media room. it looks fantastic!. I highly recommend him for any handyman job. I wish I contacted him to mount my living room TV as well. I went with someone through referral, the other guy didn’t do well. Anyways, Jarrod, thank you for the work.

I hired Mogi to install ceiling lights in my living room. He was by far the best electrician/contractor I've worked with. He is polite, humble and knowledgeable. His quote for this project was reasonable and his work ethic is impressive. I would recommend Mogi for any electrical work without reservations.

Steve did a fantastic job installing extra wide crown molding in my family room and kitchen. He was prompt and professional in all our communications. The job included many difficult miters of inside and outside joints, and Steve did an excellent job. My painter was also impressed.

Julio and his team created a patio made of pavers for us and it was a pleasure doing business with them. They promptly began and completed the job, and came up with a beautiful and affordable solution to an unexpected snag. (we needed to add a retaining wall) Julio and his team provided great customer service, good design ideas, and were very courteous on the job. The prices were by far the best around, and we got several quotes before ultimately deciding to go with Lucas Landscaping. We will be using them for all of our future landscaping needs. In fact, we're already planning to have them do a few more projects for us in the next couple months.

I had All Phases Building move the kitchen from one side of the living room to the other and enlarge. They removed the dividing wall and created an open concept. They did an exceptional job and the price was better than the other two companies that bid the job. I would use them again.

They were very professional and the quality of their painting of our whole house which encompassed two master suites, and a loft upstairs, downstairs kitchen living room powder room, also the outside two story multi colors stucco exterior , the work was wonderful. Now to the kitchen cabinets they were the usual faded old oak cabinets, they refinished the cabinets with a beautiful gray finish , very glad I didn't have to buy all new cabinets because the outcome of the painting was wonderful they look like all new cabinets now. I would highly recommend them to anyone and next time I need painting I would definitely use them again.

Lawrence saved us after a negative experience with another architect! We are adding an attached garage with a room over the top, two upstairs bathrooms, new kitchen, raising the roof and adding a dormer to augment our view, and taking out the interior chimney to open up the stair case . . . on a Tudor house that was built in 1928--not an easy project. The plans are creative and lovely, and we had no problem getting a building permit. Lawrence is prompt, patient, and really listens. Will post photos of the finished remodel when we're done.

Brian painted the main floor of our house, three bedrooms, two baths, living room with dining area, hall. He got the job done in a week. The first thing that impressed me was that he bought a small can of the color I chose, came to the house and applied it on various surfaces, so that we could judge the color in different lights at all times of day. When we decided that I had chosen the right color, he painted. He was very neat, no drips and drops and smears. A very good experience for us.

I had Chris out to my house recently to redo our house. When i say redo, i mean redo. A pipe broke but it was more like a slow leak so when i had my floors rotting out that rippled into walls we decided to redo everything. We had hardwood and tiles put in and they were flawless. I dont know if i can attach pictures but if i can i will. He remodeled our bathroom, our kitchen, and our living room. Remodeled half of our study and my daughters room. I painted the whole interior to get rid of the mold. Insulation and plumbing was done by a sub he recommended but everything turned out flawless. I loved getting updates while i was at work or out of town. Toni sent me pictures of extra work that was going to be involved and asked if i wanted it performed not pressuring me into it. I also appreciate the fact that they worked weekends. I appreciated the fact that they were so courteous of my stuff, covering my clothes when they sanded the drywall in the laundry room, carefully placing my paintings where they would not get broken, etc. At one point, something was cut short, it was a really simple mistake but Chris went and got some more to replace it. I really appreciated their honesty. They did what they said they would do and on time. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to anyone. I loved the fact that they fixed the issues and i loved the fact that they stayed within their estimate even though most of the work was hourly rated. They really increased the value of my home! Call them for repairs or remodeling...

Glenn Coggeshell created a yard space for myself. He had to remove rocks bringing in dirt to prepare the ground for the lawn. He also planted various plants for the landscape building planting beds. Glenn also created and designed a gorgeous fountain pond for my landscape. The entire piece of art was built with green materials to include timbers and the natural rocks here in the Ozark Mountains. I am so pleased with it and so are the many animals..birds who love stopping by for a drink..and the flowing water is so relaxing...I am able to hear it from my deck as well as opened windows. Glenn also constructed an additional room for me. He also worked on my deck maintenance. Glenn is creative and performs his work to the agreed specifications. He takes pride in a job well done. He managed the entire project precisely and in the agreed time frame of job completion date. I recommend any of his services highly.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

    What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

    • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
    • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
    • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
    • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
