Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

They went above and beyond when moving our church piano. Even moving a few things in our storage unit to make room for it. I would highly recommend this company for piano moving!

Hilario was very responsible and we agreed on a reasonable price to move my piano. He wrapped a protecting seal around the keyboard while moving, and handled every step with care. He's moved pianos for 15 years—he definitely knows what he's doing!

Did not hire a piano mover. The piano was too far gone to tune. It is now being dismantled! The only way I could submit the first part was to select a company.

Moving Clear was quick to respond, on time, and communicative. I was worried that moving my piano was going to be really difficult (its a massive 100 year old upright piano that was on the second level of a townhome), but these guys did it in under 30 minutes from start to finish. I was so, so impressed. Would highly recommend.

The crew was right on time, prepared and friendly. They easily moved an upright piano from one house to another, taking care upon delivery to make sure they didn’t damage the house or the piano, and they worked quickly. All three crew members were great.

Wow Juan and his time responded very quickly, and I needed a rush job. They totally saved my day, and helped me move a piano from Capitol Hill to Georgetown. Could not be more happy. I’m so so grateful for their team. The piano was cared for and everything was done in less than 2 hours.

These guys were incredible! They moved our piano from Spanaway all the way up to Seattle for $150 less than the next best quote. They were on time and very communicative, and to top it all off they made my 7 year old son feel like he was helpful and part of the process which made his day! The piano was well taken care of on the move and they were so friendly to work with. I'm planning to use them anytime I have to move from here on. Great experience over all.

Art is an outstanding piano mover. He has tremendous experience and is very professional. He communicates well and has amazing equipment to make any job doable. Our job had its share of complications and he pulled it off very smoothly at a very fair price with the utmost care and concern of our grand piano as his top priority.

I was contacted and given a bid on my moving job very quickly. They phoned me to let me know they would be able to arrive early for the move. I added additional items to be moved and was charged a small additional fee. All items were wrapped and delivered in perfect condition (including my piano). I will be using Moving Clear again in the near future.

They helped me move an upright piano from a house in Snohomish to a townhouse in Seattle. They were always prompt in responding and did an excellent job. Pricing was fair and competitive as well. Would definitely hire them again!

Juan, Gilerio and Alonzo came early before 8 am...I was impressed! They even know where to go....they went straight to work - in a few minutes, my baby grand was ready to be rolled out of my apartment....they did a super job in protecting the piano...and did a super job in rolling it up their truck for delivery to my sister's house in Edmonds. I will definitely hire them again if I need to move a grand piano!
