Colleen is a rare combination -- both wonderfully logical and incredibly kind and warm. I can't say enough of my sessions with her, especially the analytical exercises and work to reframe thought processes. Colleen is your neuroscience-backed fairy godmother, helping you change your behaviors, retell your story to yourself, and leap for what you want the most (but have always been afraid to dare to even whisper to yourself that yes, you can have it, and yes, you do in fact deserve it). Using Pinterest boards, writing exercises, journaling, analytical exercises and actionable items and goals for the week, we've tackled so much together -- and the best part is, I know I'm not in it alone. I love having someone who has no SUBJECTIVE bias for what she wants to happen in my life -- unlike my family or friends, she is merely there to help me get the best, most passionate life. Change your thinking, and you'll change your life -- but this isn't just "think positively." It's "How can we be concrete in our new thinking and try out different new things to see what works." Try out her exercises and self-reflections and see if you don't have a new direction in a few months. Dakota Kim, Writer and Event Producer

Deborah Drake is incredible! I was first introduced to Deb over a year ago, after she invited me to be a part of her weekly writing group we affectionately called “Tuesday’s with Deborah” or better known to us as “A Writers Support Group for Reticent Bloggers.” She created a safe haven for writers and bloggers to incubate their ideas and share thoughts weekly. Which turned out to be some of the best inspiration, not only for my writing, but for my business as well. I have also had the opportunity to work with her on my first book, “The Art of Working for Yourself” which she was my editor and voice on my shoulder, helping me get out of my own way. I have to thank her for helping me keep my writing voice as the project went along. As tough as the process sometimes was for me, Deb was pivotal in making sure I stayed on track and helped me flush out ideas from the cover to my bio. I would work with her again in a heartbeat. What more can I say, Deb is good at what she does.

It is with genuine enthusiasm that I recommend Lynn Murphy as a writer, editor, and editorial project manager. Lynn is exceptionally smart and strategic, quickly grasping all relevant data and key points of emphasis, and then communicates in clear and concise prose to suit any business project. At the same time, she has a woman's keen intuition and insight that make her equally well suited for more sensitive subjects and assignments. Lynn also has an editor's eye for great versus more common writing, whether on more complicated subjects or with the simple turn of a phrase that results in the most compelling communication. Net, she can write for you or make your writing better. Importantly, Lynn has invaluable experience in the high-octane world of Hollywood television and film. She brings fire-hardened skills in working successfully under pressure and in a more visible environment with lofty expectations. Finally, and perhaps most significantly, Lynn is a wonderful colleague and teammate. She's punctual, delivers her work on time and on the mark, and always delights with the outcome. She is truly a pleasure with whom to work, and I recommend her most highly. I

Great writer. Quick delivery. I got more than I asked for, and would use him again. This was a unique project, but his theatrical and film background came in very handy to me.

A well-written trade book is the foundation of commercial viability for a game developer interested in converting revenue streams of their skilled labor via film production, RPG modules, artwork and extrusion product development contracts. A well-appointed developer will have less difficulty raising capital, pitching their product's potential and establishing the commercial potential of their expert product.

I love to write engaging content with a sense of humor. As a freelance writer I create online content such as blog posts, SEO copy, social media posts and bios or newsletters. I believe the key to good copywriting is to add value (or at least a little entertainment) to the information that is already out there for your audience to use.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

  • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
  • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
  • Expertise in your target area.
  • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

  • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
  • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.
