Not knowing anything in regards to bookkeeping/taxes/laws, etc...I was very concerned if I was in compliance in this arena. I had a bookkeeper before Ken ...but I had no peace of mind and wasn't assured that everything was in order. Ken has been very helpful and I no longer worry about the legal stuff when it comes to my bookkeeping, thanks to Ken. I'm not sure if I am getting all the necessary advice as to how to save on taxes. We're a new company and I'm very busy but I'm hoping to find the time to talk with Ken more on how to reduce my taxes by making the right financial decisions.

Michael was prepared for my appointment and did his best to explain to an inexperienced new business owner how to use Quickbooks. He went above and beyond in creating a template for me outside of our appointment time. I would definitely return for further questions if needed--he was a great value compared to other accountant who do this type of Quickbooks set up and training.

I have come to rely on Christy. Besides being accurate and and clear in her communications, which you would hope all bookkeepers would be, she keeps an eye out for tax deadlines and payroll. I interviewed several Bookkeepers when my previous bookkeeper passed away. Christy seemed to be the best. Now after working with her for nine months I'm really pleased to have Christy on my team and highly recommend her.

She is very professional, knowledgeable and extremely easy to work with. She was always available for questions and was very timely in getting things done. I am currently using Pfeiffers Accounting and highly recommend her!

I'm a tax professional down near New Orleans and have known Lily for about a year. I'm very impressed with her attitude and passion to get the right answer to tax and bookkeeping related issues. She's taken the time to complete necessary Enrolled Agent exams and tests, and knowledge requirements. She's taken the time to work with a local CPA, studying his strengths while networking with many other experts around the country to build a thorough and diverse network. I feel sure you'll be very satisfied with her attention to detail, while balancing work and family responsibilities, with clients needs and demands.

Julie has been doing our accounting/bookkeeping work for the past five years on a weekly basis. She enters bills & payroll, prepares our quarterly reports, reconciles bank statements & works closely with our CPA to prepare our yearly tax returns. She posts our deposits & assists with making sure our QB class divisions are accurate so that our monthly/city reports for funding are processed timely. Pleasant to work with & flexible with her time - we can e-mail or call with questions or emergency needs & she gets right back to us.

I had a huge problem with my books before going to seek a CPA firm who can help me. I was too trusting when people tell me they are who they are and that they can do what they say they can do. Let me tell you that from that experience, I will be cautious when people just say things without history of good deeds. Before I went to William Bratton, CPA, I had 2 former bookkeepers who were not upfront with me regarding my records. Not only did they mess up, destroyed and lost my records, when I wanted them back, they refused to give them back to me. William Bratton took charge of reconstructing my Payroll Records and getting me caught up with filing to IRS and State agencies. William was very, very helpful with imparting information to me. He was also very helpful in getting my records (or whatever was salvaged and kept by the two people I trusted, the dreaded bookkeepers) back by calling on favors from his police officer friends. NOW, THAT IS GOING ABOVE AND BEYOND A CPA’S DUTIES. I will definitely continue to use William as my accountant from now on. Do I recommend him? You betcha. I am more than pleased with the services I received. I am over the moon with it. Sincerely, Shelly M.

Melanie has done a fine job of helping us to date with our minor bookkeeping needs, working with our "in house" bookkeeper with questions about QuickBooks, standard bookkeeping practice, etc. We use Melanie to perform a quarterly "audit" of the work our in house bookkeeper does, as well as having Melanie file our taxes. Her work in both these areas has been more than satisfactory; beyond that she is pleasant, personable, and easy to work with. She certainly has been an asset to our small business so far, and I am glad to be able to write this positive review.

Our taxes are little more difficult than most; especially with 2 special needs kids. Jim was wonderful in helping us get our taxes done and finding all of the deductions we needed. We will definitely be using him again this coming year!

Kaley Walsh jumped in shortly after my bookkeeper left my firm. She was able to learn our accounting and project management software in no time. She inherited problems created by the previous bookkeeper and was able to resolve the issues. She was on top of billing and created useful financial reports for my regular review. She's proactive and does much more than bookkeeping as she also learns the business she's working with.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to hire an accountant?

Accountants’ rates vary based on their education, licenses, experience, and the work for which they are being hired. An accountant may charge an hourly rate when a company or individual needs their services on a short-term basis, such as when performing an audit or requesting assistance setting up a financial database or process. Hourly rates can range as widely as $40 per hour to $300 or more per hour, depending on your geographic location and the accountant. Check out the average hourly rate for accounting services in your region.

Accountants may offer a package rate for weekly, monthly or annual services to reward ongoing customers. Many accountants offer online services where small businesses can access online accounting software and payroll assistance, and the accountant — for a monthly or other recurring fee — provides financial analysis and reporting of their numbers. For basic monthly accounting services, an accountant might charge anywhere from $75 to $500 or more, depending on what was included in a given package, the size of the client’s business, and the complexity of work requested. Nationally, full-time staff accountants earn between $40,000 and $80,000, depending on experience and other factors.

    Who can file my taxes?

Any individual with a preparer tax identification number (PTIN) is eligible to file your income taxes on your behalf. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean they will be the best candidate to provide the help you need with your income tax preparation. The IRS explains that CPAs, attorneys and enrolled agents are all allowed to legally represent their clients before the IRS. They have a more thorough understanding of tax code than an individual operating solely with a PTIN or an Annual Filing Season Program participant who provides their services on a volunteer basis. Consider the complexity of your tax return and what level of expertise you’ll require. Before entrusting someone with your private financial and personal information, do some research on their qualifications. The IRS has a searchable database where you can verify the background and credentials of your income tax preparation professional. Once you have selected someone, ask about their service fees and confirm their availability. Then provide them with all the documentation they require, including W-2s, 1099s and more. Always ask to review the paperwork before it is submitted, and never sign a blank tax return.

    What is an accountant?

Accountants are financial professionals who have received an accounting degree from a four-year university or college. By trade, accountants prepare, maintain and examine the financial statements of an individual, business or institution. An accountant prepares reports for tax purposes and can also perform audits of public companies. Common tasks include creating budgets, analyzing profits and losses of a company, processing payroll, preparing financial statements for company leadership, and creating and maintaining financial database systems for a company.

Accountants do not automatically have a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation unless they have passed the Uniform CPA Examination and received the proper license. Regardless of whether they are CPA certified or not, accountants can assist businesses and individuals with bookkeeping and financial reporting, while CPAs are more knowledgeable in tax codes as a result of the CPA licensing examination and continuing education requirements. CPAs are also eligible to represent clients before the IRS if audit support is required, while a non-CPA accountant is not. Academic background, years in the field and professional reputation all can affect an accountant’s rates.

How much does it cost to get taxes done?

Hiring a professional to help with income tax preparation can be priceless. Pro help can mean no mistakes and a maximized tax return. The cost to get your income taxes done depends on the professional you hire. Tax attorneys or in-demand CPAs will often have the highest rates for their services. Next in the pricing tier are enrolled agents, who will usually have higher rates than individuals solely working with a preparer tax identification number (PTIN). Nationally, the average cost of income tax preparation ranges from $150 to $190. Income tax preparation prices can also vary based on where you live and the complexity of your tax returns. Here are some examples of average income tax preparation prices from an enrolled agent:

    • Taxpayers filing only a W-2 tax form: $50.
    • Taxpayers filing a W-2 along with additional tax forms such 1099-INT and 1098-E: $150.
    • Taxpayers with several tax forms and one or two additional considerations such as a rental property, investment transactions, K-1 income, 1099-MISC or a simple small business: $225.
    • Taxpayers with multiple activities (rentals, K-1 income, small business, etc.), several stock transactions and more: $395.

Nationally, the average hourly rate nationally for a tax prep professional ranges between $150 and $450.
