Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How can I renovate my house cheaply?

There are a number of highly effective, budget-friendly renovations you can perform on your home. Here are some ideas to consider:

  • Pressure wash your home’s exterior
  • Paint your front door
  • Replace your light fixtures
  • Get new door knobs
  • Remove your popcorn ceiling
  • Add new wallpaper
  • Paint your kitchen cabinets

And the list goes on. Chat with a few professionals to figure out how much your desired home renovations will cost you. If the prices exceed your budget, ask if the pros can suggest alternative upgrades that are more affordable.

What renovations are worth doing?

The most worthwhile renovations are the ones that will make your home more appealing to potential homebuyers in your market. But you should also consider renovations that will increase your own satisfaction and make your home more enjoyable for your household.

Explore remodeling ideas for your kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, attic, garage — any part of your home. If you get inspired, start researching prices and come up with a budget. Then, contact a few remodeling contractors to discuss your vision and get accurate cost estimates.

How much does it cost to completely renovate a house?

Some homeowners pay as much as $25,000 to remodel a home. But you can pay more or less depending on:

  • The age of the home. Older homes tend to involve more work to update.
  • The size of the home. Larger homes tend to cost more to renovate than smaller ones.
  • The condition of the home. Homes requiring structural changes or architectural plans will also cost more to renovate.

Additional cost factors include building permits, as well as the costs of the required materials, paints, and flooring materials and labor. To get a better understanding of how much your home renovation will cost, discuss your project with several remodeling contractors and ask for price estimates.

Where do I start when renovating a house?

The first step is making a detailed plan for your home improvement project, which includes researching designs and appliances, and creating blueprints. Next, work out an exact budget for your home renovation, allowing extra money for unexpected expenses or emergencies.

Search for home renovation and remodeling contractors and make your decision after interviewing three to five promising candidates. Finally, make a timeline for the project, then begin packing up and preparing for the renovation to start.

Is it worth remodeling an old home?

It depends on the home’s condition and what you plan to do with it. For example, if you plan to live in the home for a long time, performing renovations could make the home more livable and enjoyable. If your intention is to resell it, it might be worth the time, money and effort. Old homes typically cost less than new ones, giving you a built-in budget to perform the renovations. The home’s unique character might even provide a significant boost in value once the renovations have brought the rest of it up to date.

However, you need to conduct research to fully answer this question. Figure out how much it will cost to remodel the old home and decide if the return on investment is enough for you.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up a consultation or appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by performing an online search for local professionals near you.

Message the contractor, and see if they are willing to set up a video consultation call instead of an in-person site visit. With video chat, the contractor may be able to assess the scale of the project, give you better information on what needs to be done and perhaps provide an estimate. Be sure to discuss virtual payments, as well as general strategies for staying safe.

Can I use digital payments to pay for general contractor services?

Currently, many general contractors are using common digital payment services like PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash, Zelle, Google Pay and more. And more will likely adopt these and similar platforms as coronavirus continues to force companies to take on digital capabilities.

Contact general contractors beforehand to discuss whether they accept digital payments, and take all necessary measures to meet social distancing recommendations. You can also compare general contractors side-by-side online to see which ones accept digital payments.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

Elias and his business majorly saved me from what could have been a remodeling disaster! I had previously almost hired a HORRIBLE contractor who wasn’t doing anything. I fired him and then found on Thumbtack app the business info of Elias. Elias and Rey were EXACTLY what I dreamed of as a contractor! They both work carefully, listen, and advise as needed. They helped me redesign my kitchen and it’s a thing of beauty now! Elias’s business transformed my ugly 70s fixer upper into a modern aqua and grey themed house! I cannot give them enough praise, I am lucky to have hired them. If I save money to do even more remodeling improvements next year, I will absolutely be hiring them again. I can’t think of any other contractors I would want to work with!

Wow, where to begin? Cliff was amazing from the start by responding to my request within an hour and was able to stop by my house within a few days to assess my project. I had a broad spectrum of ideas and he was extremely helpful in guiding me to realistic but amazing options. He spent quality time looking at my home and hearing me out .. and then put together a quote quite a bit lower than the other contractor. He even explained it to me in detail. Cliff was able to work my rather large project into his schedule fairly soon. There were several projects he got done for me. The big one was reorganizing a bathroom and a half bath that were oddly situated .. creating an amazing master bathroom. He had to remove a wall, remove tub/toilets/sinks/vanities and then start over. I now have a beautiful new bathroom with a luxurious vibe. He paid attention to the small details too .. getting the mirror just the right height (as a tall lady that is very important). The next big project was combining 2 smaller bedrooms into a large master suite and creating a master walk in closet. He removed a wall here as well and had to rewire outlets, move lights, add a support beam. Also, adding a custom walk in closet one only dreams about. He was very open to my own ideas of what I wanted and even improved on those ideas. He kept me informed every step of the way and moved quickly but efficiently. There were some "old house" issues he was able to assess and help me out as well. I had planned on these (noted to me at the home inspection when I purchased the house) but Cliff added these necessary fixes into the plans .. the poor guy had to get up into the roof and under the house so many times. There were some electrical wiring issues, fuser box had some issues and some exterior items. Previous owners had done some very inventive repairs that I am now paying for .. thankfully Cliff is knowledgeable and provided quality work at great prices. He was also patient with my many "add ons" such as removing an oven vent to replace it with a microwave .. he is so good I asked him to pick it out as I trusted his judgement. An oddly placed hall closet door was switched from the living room side to the hallway, all doors were replaced, the entire house was painted, windows cleaned (inside and out) and basically anything I asked he has the talent and knowledge to do. Carpentry, electrical, plumbing, construction, design, ect .. such so much. I have several more projects I will be booking with him ... a laundry room refresh, a kitchen remodel and some exterior issues. The most amazing thing is how easy Cliff is to work with. He is communicative, informative, funny and experienced. Simply a gem of a find. I can't speak highly enough of Cliff and literally had no project on my mind that he could not do. This guy is one in a million
