Learning English with Rebecca is fun. She started with doing an assessment of my level and adjusted to it, so we could pick up right there with improving my English. In our teaching lessons, we concentrated on different topics, such as idioms, and had different study books that I used for my homework as well. Thanks to Rebecca, I could expand my vocabulary and grammar. During the conversations with her that are part of her teaching, she kindly corrected mistakes I made what helped me to improve as well. She is a very nice person that creates a good atmosphere, what is an enjoyable experience and helped me in improving my English. In addition to educating the language itself, she also tried to impart additional information for example about the country and region where I live now to better acquaint myself with the environment. I can recommend her as teacher.

I found Louisa's tutoring services very helpful and insightful. I'm a Ph.D.student in psychology writing on challenging topics and Louisa was able to provide me sound, constructive feedback on my writing. Some simple exercises during our session provided me tools and new ways to approach the writing in creative ways. I think Louisa has a good ability to evaluate a writer's ability, and then apply the appropriate techniques and lessons to bring the writer along. She did this for me.

Scott was my tutor for French as I want to brush up on my language skills to go again to France in the spring. He was just a superb "coach" in getting me through the complexities of French. I immensely profited from my working with Scott, and as the new year arrives, I am going to meet with him occasionally to "re-charge" my language skills.

Becky is a wonderful teacher. I hired her two years ago and have really enjoyed learning Spanish. I'm slow! But Becky is patient, funny, kind, knowledgeable, and flexible. She teaches at a number of local community colleges, so she's not just someone who hung out a shingle. She knows how to teach languages.

Monica has been teaching my 5 year old for the past few weeks. She uses a lot of encouraging words, which is what many kids at 4-5-6 years old need. She tunes her pace of teaching based on the kid's pace. She slows down and repeats as many times when my 5 year old gets stuck at any note. She focuses on making sure the child understands the fundamentals. She uses appropriate lesson material and gives interesting take away practice material. Unlike other piano teachers I have encountered, she is well prepared with tailored instruction material for the child. She is punctual, available and flexible. I can go on and on about her. I am very happy that I found the right piano teacher for my child's temperament.

Patricia is amazing. She helped Aniruddh rampup quickly on English and helped him get better grades. We moved from India when Aniruddh was 7. English was not his primary language, that made him struggle at school. Patricia came to the rescue and helped Aniruddh gradually pick the language, both written and spoken. Patricia has tremendous experience working with all kinds of children, and she adapts her curriculum according to each Student. In teaching experience helps. In addition to a great teacher, she is also a wonderful person and awesome baker. She is very punctual, polite and helpful. I learned a few baking tips from her on the side when she was teaching. My kids still miss Patricia. Thanks for ask the help.

Laura taught me English for several weeks. I received excellent corrections on pronounciation and grammar. The fun about learning at Laura's has been one-to-one Skype sessions, direct feedback, socially oriented outline of topics, flexible approach. I chose for personal lessons and learning in a group would do the job as well!

I started working with Theo in February 2015. I found him very engaged and very enthusiastic about the subjects he teaches. He has a very deep understanding of the language arts and always willing to work with you on a curriculum based on the student's needs. I am an adjunct instructor at UW, and I will gladly recommend Theo any day. Don't hesitate to call me for references. Best, Ilanko.

Jean had good rapport with my son, who enjoyed this first experience with guitar lessons. Jean's sense of humor was appreciated. The varied approach included basic music theory, warm-up exercises, chords and popular songs. Jean is an excellent guitar teacher and we enthusiastically recommend him.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.
