FAQs
- What types of customers have you worked with?
My jobs span all ages and styles of dance which I absolutely enjoy. My weekly classes include early childhood dance, ballet and tap, through Parks and Recreation, senior centers, pre-schools, and after school programs. Additional freelance gigs to do parties and workshops in a variety of venues and occasions can be anything from a "Luau" party, a "Tarantella" to celebrate Columbus day, or African dance for Black History Month. I have instructed girl scouts, church groups, home schooling groups, and presented at festivals. My summers are especially delightful as I lead folk dance and movement at a summer day camp.
- Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?
I have just been rehired as choreographer for the multi-cultural show in my local public school for Spring 2012. Last year was my 5th year. Each year the music teacher chose musical selections and taught the children the songs while I created a dance piece to showcase each selection. I worked with parents on costuming and have always been pleased to see how the collaborative process always comes together. It truly does take a village! In a small town like mine the 2 shows are usually a "full house". Boys and girls are involved in the production and younger children look forward to when they are old enough to be a dancer in the show. All children are welcome as long as they can make rehearsals. These often take place before school making it even more of a challenge for the students and their parents who drive them there. We have covered material from Asia, Europe, Africa and North and South America. It is an honor to be invited back each year and a delight to run into my dancers around town who call me 'Miss Holly'.
- What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
If you are a parent really respect the age and desires of your child. There is a time and place for formal training but if a child is looking for an avenue of self expression it is best to make sure that there is a good balance of structure and creativity so the joy of dance isn't discouraged. I always include moments of free style within my structured classes. I teach Checcetti technique because I believe that it more respectful to work with the body in a natural way, never forcing the body. For anyone of any age dance is a wonderful aerobic activity and can be a social gathering that leaves everyone happy and energized. Tap and folk dance can stimulate brain activity and increase balance which is especially helpful to seniors. Dance can be a wonderful way for people to be exposed to a variety of musical experiences from classical, musical theater, various ethnic music and more. Gaining music appreciation and responding to rhythms is also an aid in learning a musical instrument.
