I was recommended to Emerald Flooring and Carpentry through a friend of mine who spoke highly of John Coffey's services. He was very professional and easy to work with. The laminate flooring and baseboard came out beautifully. Highly recommended.

Chris was great from start to finish! We started having him paint our kitchen and dining room which turned out great. We found out he provided other services and hired him to install backsplash in our kitchen, as well as wood floors in our dining room. Everything looks great! He always kept us informed of progress, showed up when he said he would, and even gave suggestions on how we could save money in the process...who does that?! We are very greatful to have found him, and will definitely be hiring him again in the future!

Andy has worked with us since 2006. He has remodeled bathrooms, done indoor and outdoor painting projects, installed hardwood floor and carpet, built sheds, helped us put in a circular cobblestone driveway, supervised a roof project, installed a water heater, built retaining walls, paths, a vegetable garden, done landscaping, repaired our swimming pool and spa, installed kitchen appliances, done woodworking and built furniture. He has come to our rescue many times for emergency repairs. He is great about setting up projects for us to help with labor or to do ourselves. Andy's main concern in any project is safety. He is also interested in saving the customer money whenever possible but never at the expense of quality. He is an environmentally conscious contractor. He will always come back and do warranty work if needed. His records are always thorough and specific. In an effort to do the extra little things we request, he can run behind schedule and the job may take a bit longer than first projected. The main reason we bring Andy back for project after project is his honesty and integrity. We have worked with many contractors in our 30 plus years of marriage and have never found anyone we trust this much.

I had some basic handyman kinds of projects I needed done in my home. A friend suggested Jeff from Ten day kitchen and Bath.Jeff was very knowledgeable, professional, and completed what I needed done quickly and on time. I he was very friendly while on the job,and made some great suggestions for some other projects I want to do in the near future. I was very pleased with the work he did...very detail oriented, and his prices were resonable. I would highly recommend him for future projects.

I am a finish painter, and I have had the pleasure of painting Paul's finish carpentry! Any painter will tell you that a large part of our job is to conceal or remediate the dings and gaps in the carpenter's woodwork. Paul's work is so fine that my work could just sail along! I highly recommend Paul, excellent work!

Gordon helped do a lot of work to finish our basement -- priming and painting floor and ceilings, staining wood, various woodworking, installing a door frame and door, and other odds and ends. He's done great work and has been professional, timely, and friendly. We'll definitely work with him again and recommend him highly!

      About

I have over 20 years of experience working all over the Puget Sound area on a wide variety of projects. I have considerable experience working on medium to large scale wood-framed residential structures (2500-13,000 sq.ft.) clad with masonry, cement-board, wood, stucco as well as low to high rise mixed use structures employing wood and metal framing, clad with stucco, masonry, curtain wall, cement-board, wood, concrete, and metal. I am a master AutoCAD user and proficient at Revit Architecture 2012. In addition to this, I've spent several years working for RW Beck, Woodward-Clyde, URS-Greiner, Kennedy-Jenks, Berger-Abam, HDR-EES and others on a variety of projects, involving water treatment and transmission, surface water management, stream remediation, landfill crown and remediation, structural design, etc. Please have a look at my resume, I think it will speak for itself. It is only a partial list of my clients and employers over this period. I've often worked two or more projects simultaneously and employed professionals myself. Project engineers and architects appreciate the fact that I rose through the ranks in the construction trades, working on many of the high-rises in downtown Seattle as a journey carpenter. I enjoy my work, and I am going to be happy wherever I land, so please give me a call or send me an email so that we can arrange to meet. I have credible references available upon request.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

      Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
