Sylvia came over, to give us advice on our 4 month old Yorkie/Havanese pup - Yoda, who is a handful. She answered all our queries and concerns, spent time teaching us commands for Yoda as well as training Yoda to follow them. We were impressed with how well she handled Yoda and taught him to respond. She is very informative, knowledgeable, patient and passionate about what she does. We like the fact that Sylvia came home to train Yoda in his home environment. We also like the fact that she available via a phone call and can be contacted anytime we have any concerns. We recommend her if you are looking for a good dog trainer. We will definitely be using her for our next dog training session. Thanks Sylvia for easing our minds. Yoda is already showing signs of improvement.

Thank you Martha! I was very hesitant about getting a trainer, only because it is a little bit of a financial commitment and I think a lot of us think that we can do things ourselves, but I was really having a hard time with one of my dogs and decided that it was worth it to try a trainer. She was great. She was very responsive and attentive before I even hired her, and even more so after. She works with you to make sure you get what you want/need out of the session. She met my two dogs and helped me better understand why they were misbehaving and how I could make them better. She listened to all my concerns and addressed all of them, and best of all once she works with you, you can call her anytime for additional help which is very reassuring. On a side note she is also very fair, and if money is a concern she can definitely work with you to try to keep the time frame within your budget which was very appreciated. If you are looking for a dog trainer, I definitely recommend Martha!

Ada was prompt in responding to my initial request for dog trainers near my home and after discussing what needs to be accomplished explained what she believed would be necessary and how much it would cost giving me the opportunity to talk it over with my daughter (the dog's real owner) who will get back with me tomorrow about the degree of commitment to help pay for the service. Ada kindly accepted the delay and pleasantly offered the suggestion that if it didn't work out just now she would be happy to help whenever we were ready. So, I already know we are going to hire her because she is so flexible and considerate regarding our circumstances and needs.

I am absolutely pleased. Robert met with me on short notice and was very responsive. He was professional, organized and has a very good manner with my dog. The whole service is fantastic, not only the walk but the follow up email. I love the map detailing the route and the pictures of my dog, I look forward to seeing that from every walk! I know my dog is in good hands. Two very big thumbs up!

I took my dog in for some behavioral issues... He likes to jump on people when I'm out walking him. Anne was very knowledgeable and offered straightforward advice and clear directions for helping this issue. I'd definitely recommend Anne's services to anyone looking for a dog trainer.

Cindy Wilson is an excellent dog trainer. She even trained my dog to ring the bill to let me know when he wants to go out. I still call her till this day when I have dog training questions. Even though she's now in another state. I highly recommend her services.

Patti is amazing! She gave me practical tips on training my dogs and gave me insight into how their minds work. She showed me processes to help me work with them and gave me hope that I will be able to train them properly. She saw my dogs as loving, sweet and good dogs - like I do! Even just 24 hrs later I see a marked difference in their listening and wanting to change direction! I have 2 mastiffs and needed someone to come to my home since it wasn't possible to take them both somewhere by myself for training and she was able to do that. Patti is kind and gentle and I am so thankful for her help! I would definitely recommend her to anyone.

We love Zoom Room! The staff are amazing, especially Olivia at the front desk! The owner Cheryl is truly a gifted dog trainer and an all-around awesome person. Zoom Room offers numerous classes and you will find no trainer more dedicated to you and your pup than Cheryl; she has taught me so much about being a good handler and my dog Xedo loves her. Xedo has excelled at Agility under her awesome direction and insight. Even now, while he is recovering from ACL surgery, Cheryl has been so awesome, checking on him and offering ideas and encouragement. Cheryl is going to help us build strength in his knee, by utilizing one of her class specialties, “Puplates”! Best of all Zoom Room is a community gathering place where like-minded, fun loving dog owners and their awesome pups can meet up; whether it’s for "Agility League Night" (a friendly competition for pups and their peeps!) or celebrating while playing games and enjoying lite fare. Xedo even had his 6th birthday party at Zoom Room! Boy was that fun!! We have so many favorite events at Zoom Room it's hard to name them all! Cheryl is so awesome at putting together parties to celebrate every new season, including holiday photos shoots for pups and their owners. There is no better training studio around! If you are looking for a great community to connect with while learning tons about training your dog and having lots of fun while doing it, look no further! Zoom Room is perfect!

Nancy has provided me with pet sitting services for years, and she has been outstanding from the start. She is one of the handful of people that I would trust in my home without me. Over the years, she has been a favorite with the cats and dogs we have owned (we currently have 2 cats and 1 older dog), and she always has excellent pet advise. She is versitle and flexible. She gives our pets love, attention, and when necessary, shots and other medications. When we go away for a weekend or a week, we enjoy ourselves so much more knowing Nancy is caring for our "family" that has to stay behind.

I started training with Jessica in December (2014) and I am crazy about her! I have never had good luck with personal trainers, they never seemed to sincerely care about me and my success. But Jessica is truly one of a kind. She is excited about the workout, and that is contagious! She modifies the workout based on my capabilities and never ever makes me feel bad or like a failure for needing the modifications. She sets the bar extremely high, expects you to clear it and encourages you the entire time. I find myself wanting to work harder and push myself harder just to make her proud! She is the best, you won't be sorry when you sign up with her.

Thomas is a great dog trainer! He knows what our dog is thinking and can very simply communicate with her. Our dog seems to learn from Thomas so quickly and effortlessly. We are the ones who need the extra work. But even we get it in a few tries! It is so wonderful to have a dog that is well trained and well mannered! Especially a rather big dog like our dog, Anoush is!!!! We are so happy to have found Thomas and hope to continue with him until our dog earns her "PHD"!!!!!!

Shawna was great with our troubled twosome. They are a work in progress but she helped us understand what they were doing and why they were doing it. We are seeing great improvements with them every day! They loved her which helped a great deal. She had a very good way with the dogs and they responded to her beautifully and always greeted her as an old friend, which is surprising with Lhasas. They aren't that good with people they see every day! We would highly recommend her!

To whom it may concern: Cara provided pet sitting services in my home on numerous occasions beginning in November, 2012. Cara proved to be capable and responsible as well as a great communicator. During this time, I had no issues with the services she provided, in fact it was a relief to leave home knowing that my dog, Toby, as well as my home, were both so reliably cared for. Cara was on time and was wonderful in keeping me informed of how Toby was feeling and behaving. I recommend anyone that is looking for a pet sitting service to rely on Cara. I was fully satisfied and confident that my dog was in the best hands. Sincerely, Donna

Awesome experience. I have an older dog who is getting more aggressive with strangers and she managed to win him over and one dog that is much younger and a total sweetheart. She successfully help me while I was on vacation and my husband and daughter works long and odd hours. We did not want to leave them created for too long. Angelica came in with a key and walked the dogs. I really loved her app, that shared with me pictures and their adventures together. I am very grateful for her help.

Jacqui was asked to jump into a very difficult situation and she was absolutely marvelous. I watched Jacqui train four dogs for a commercial shoot, in which, she had very little time to prepare and time was of the essence. It was a complete success! Jacqui has a confident demeanor and knows how to work with animals proficiently. With over 6 years of experience, I can't think of a better trainer for our commercial shoot. Jacqui is kind and respectful and was the lynchpin in ensuring the success of our shoot and ultimately our commercial spot. We could not have done it without her. If you need your dog trained, call her right now! You will not be disappointed. Thank you, Jacqui for all of your help! I will be calling you again, when my director tells me that our talent is a bunch of pooches. You rock!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

      • What type of training methods do you use?
      • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
      • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
