Justin from Count on it Construction had his hands full with my repair job. My upstairs bathroom was flooded and the house was built in 1920. Justin and his team worked hard to put it back together. During the renovations with a day or two left the upstairs bathroom flooded again, due to a faulty fitting on the toilet. Justin came to the house within 10 minutes of my panicked phone call and had his team on sight within 30. He and his team worked tirelessly to make it write and get the house repaired for the second time. For a terrible situation I couldn't have asked for a better contractor to work with. Justin worked miracles and got the house up and ready to go back on the market within 2 weeks. Thank you to you and your team for working so diligently to get us back up and running. Great, honest, responsive, and genuine contractor to work with.

Luis has been a delight to work with. He has met all our expectations as well as come up with good ideas and suggestions for us. He is prompt with his work, pleasant to interact with, and easy to contact. These qualities have made our whole-house renovation as easy and low stress as it can possibly be. Thank you, Luis. Well done!

Great and easy to work with. As a new homeowner who doesn't "speak" home improvement, he was very helpful in making sure I understood the process! Thanks so much! The house/window trim and deck look great! Look forward to working together again.

Josh answered immediately and got the job done in 48 hours--very nice person with lots of experience doing his own rental homes. Will definitely use him for other projects around my house. I am a widow and am skeptical of having strange men coming to my house but I felt completely comfortable and safe with Josh.

We had our house painted by WoodRun Homes. A couple of pieces of the siding needed replaced and other spots repaired which were done perfectly. You couldn't tell there were any bad spots when they were done. The painting was done beautifully. The Project Manager Kevin Brown went above board in the little things that he noticed and fixed along the way. They cleaned up everything when finished and all that was left was a beautifully painted fresh looking house. Many thanks.

We meet with Ted Thornton from Thornton Homes LLC, he was very knowledgeable and professional. I would feel confident in having him build our home. Unfortunately we are going to need to be more prepared financially on our end, to get the house we want to build. He was great friendly and willing to take time with us. Thank you!

Dustin really turned to and had our design package to us in 1 week. Not a big job enclosing an over-garage deck, but his responsiveness at this time when all designers and builders are extremely busy was very much appreciated. Also, like that he does the design work himself, is easy to communicate with and very accommodating.

Acts29 replaced several old windows in my house. Old meaning wood frame, single pane. They put in exactly what I wanted and even did extra paperwork so I could get an energy rebate for the upgrade. They take care to details. Great job.

Kim and Chuck do such a thorough job and went above and beyond to make sure we’re happy with the results. They showed up when they told us they would, made suggestions on the best materials to use and were even willing to fix issues that we came across that was totally outside the work we hired them for! Their prices is very fair and you just know that they are dealing with you upfront and honestly! They work hard and make sure they get the job done right. How happy with the several projects they have done for us.

The Acme Hardwood Flooring experts are professional, very skilled, clean, and committed to completing the job on time. We just had our second encounter with the owner of Acme. Nine years ago, we had the hardwoods in our house refinished. Our floors looked great and proved to be durable over the years. We recently moved and needed to replace the carpet flooring in our bathroom. The owner at Acme gave us an estimate right away, providing different options that would fit our budget. We are extremely happy with the results and highly recommend Acme Hardwood Flooring to anyone needing a service for hardwood flooring!

Deshone and his helper moved the biggest/heaviest furniture from an apartment to a house in the same neighborhood. It was hard work--stairs involved--but they worked solidly for more than four hours. While it is not the kind of work they normally do, they did a good job of it.

Flaim Construction was there for us after the windstorm back in November. A tree fell on our roof and smashed up the house. They fixed the eaves, roof, gutters, and chimney. Now everything looks better than before the storm!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
