Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

How do I protect my furniture when moving?

To protect furniture when moving, get furniture protectors. These will help cushion accidental impacts that may occur while making your way through tight spaces. You can also use furniture sliders for hardwood floors, which can make moving heavy or awkward furniture across your floors a lot easier than lugging it all the way.

A professional mover near you will likely have these and other moving equipment to ensure your furniture remains intact and doesn’t damage your new — or old — home.

Can you hire movers to move one item?

Yes, you can hire movers to move one item. Single-item movers are usually more than happy to give you a quote, which will likely be based on a few factors.

One of the primary things to take into consideration is the number of movers it takes to move one item. For instance, if you want to move one item of furniture, it may take several movers — particularly if it is a challenging move involving multiple floors.

Contact single-item movers near you to find out what services they offer, and get free estimates.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Is it cheaper to move your stuff or buy new stuff?

It often makes more financial sense to buy new stuff when you have the chance to sell furniture to offset the cost. The cost of moving your current furniture can sometimes be more than buying new things, particularly if the furniture is large or cumbersome to move. You can sell furniture online, or make a furniture donation and deduct it from your taxes (if it qualifies as a charitable contribution). Some places near you may even offer free furniture pickup when you choose to donate.

If you have valuable furniture that would be costly to replace, however, it may be cheaper to move them. To find out which option is best for you, contact professional movers in your area to receive quotes and estimates.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

How much does it cost to move a couch?

It costs around $290, on average, to move a couch. However, your actual cost will depend on a variety of factors. Couch movers will often quote the job based on the size of the couch, as well as how far it has to travel. A larger couch, such as a sectional, will likely cost more money to move.

On the other hand, smaller couches typically cost less, as there are fewer sections and fewer people are required to move it. Some couches may be very delicate due to their age, or they may have certain decorative details that complicate the moving process. These may cost more as well.

David and Robert did a great job moving our furniture! We also hired them for some additional moving and furniture assembly when they arrived since they had some available time in their schedule that morning. We would definitely hire them again!

The movers were absolutely wonderful! They went above and beyond helping us with our move and were extremely careful not to damage our furniture and items. I HIGHLY recommend them. They are also very reasonably priced and were worth every penny we spent. They did so good we tipped them extra! They were professional and very personable! Anyone who hires them will not be disappointed! We will be using them for any future move and will be recommending them to family and friends!!

The crew was extremely careful with our furniture, floors and walls. They came prepared to dismantle, move, and rebuild the pieces that needed it (including an extremely heavy oak bed frame up two flights of stairs). They were professional yet friendly. I have already recommended them to my parents, and we will definitely use them again.

I'm almost 7 months pregnant and restricted on weight I can lift. My husband had had a horrible week at work and was exahsted from that and flash packing in a day and a half with me (as we didn't know we had to move so quickly) so we agreed he would help watch our 6 year old, and dogs st the house while I instructed the movers and he'd unpack, and hire movers to do the heavy lifting. In approx. 4 hours, these guys moved our whole apartment of 1300 sf into a 17' truck. And we didnt have small or little amounts of furniture guys! Which they also came and unpacked the truck, all the while refusing to let me or my husband help. I wanted help with mainly big furniture, but these guys took everything they could, including heavy heavy boxes. AMAZING. You guys have got to book these people. So great! So respectful. And nothing was broken, or torn. Thank you Sergio and Abraham! Couldn't have done it without you guys.

These 2 young men come HIGHLY recommended! They were so respectful, so professional, and so very careful with everything. They were on time and stayed on track and were diligent with the schedule. My furniture is large and heavy, but I didn't have to worry about breakage. I SO wish I had found them before! I guarantee you will not be disappointed when you choose Rip City moving! Thank you for your help! You were wonderful!

Larry and his team were absolutely wonderful. We relocated back from the NY and had a big job that was POORLY packed and loaded from the team we hired on the east coast. They got everything out in record time and were super courteous and COVID careful 😊 They got everything into the proper room making unpacking easy on us. They also offered to reassemble furniture and if I had been more organized and really knew where I wanted everything, I would have taken them up on it. We're renting now but when we buy we'll be calling 503 Moving and Labor Services!

I rescheduled their service to Sunday because I just didn’t have everything ready by Friday. Then they cancelled and had to come on Monday so I had to extend my truck rental which cost me money. Then they showed up a half hour late and the first thing I told them to do was to load the truck to the top as much as possible to maximize the space as my truck was being delivered across several state lines. They failed to do this and left several gaps when packing. Even putting a 4ft doll house on the ground of the truck leaving all the space above it unable to fill so I had to pay some teenagers to move stuff around and strap the dollhouse on top of boxes to maximize the space. In addition I had to remind them several times to keep the screws for items with the items and to blanket and wrap my expensive furniture. Most times I saw my stuff on the truck and had to saw pull it out and wrap it. Also I paid extra to have three guys come out instead of two and the extra guy spend most of his time standing around consulting the other two instead of just picking things up and moving them. Then when it came time to pay they told me there was an extra fee to disconnect my washer and dryer and to move them down the stairs. Something that was never previously discussed. They never even asked if I had a washer and dryer. When I complained that it was never communicated the owner stuck by his policy and only dropped the fee after I brought up all the other issues. He acted like he was doing me a big favor to waive a fee that had never even been discussed. I have worked in banking for 15+ years and as someone who deals with sometimes upset customers I would never treat a customer this way. Especially after all the other issues. I am extremely disappointed with their service and the two 17 year olds I hired to fix their work for less than half the pay did a much better job. Used their brains to fill in gaps and best use the space and were able to get like 2/3 of my house into the 1/3 of the truck that the movers left open after their terrible loading job. Will try and post some pictures soon.
