Josh and his partner Moses were amazing. They were highly responsive and provided me with a fair estimate for a small kitchen remodel. The timeframe they were able to work in was ideal and the job turn-around fast, although the work wasn't rushed in the least. The quality of CWAG's demo/install is top-notch and their attention to detail is obvious. Everything looks beautiful down to the grout on the tile backsplash. I couldn't be happier. Highly recommended!

I needed new recessed can lights installed in my kitchen. Zeev recommended LED lights. He went and got the materials and installed them perfectly. Plus, I was having car trouble and needed a jump. He helped me push my car down the driveway to get near his vehicle. He jumped my car. What customer service! He said...I help you today...next time, I might need help. What a good worker and genuine good person. I will be calling him again!

Keenie is a personable man with a full bag of skills! He demands perfection of himself and is not willing to settle for less. He installed our new kitchen faucet and removed an old, unused Instahot. He also replaced some old fittings that were ready to cause problems. We have already talked with Keenie about some other projects we have in mind!

Daniel did a great job installing my IKEA cabinets in my storage/laundry room, working with the dimensions I had. He cleaned up after the work (although I have to get rid of all the boxes), and was very pleasant to have in my home. I will definitely hire him for more work: doorways, window and hopefully kitchen down the line!

He installed kick plates to the under cabinets also using leftover flooring, (he was skillfully able to recreate the pieces of wood to fit & look perfectly, using incredible focus to detail & my satisfaction & repurposing what I'd already purchased which kept my cost of material list at FREE..very nice !! Daniel & his wife are lovely lovely people & a privilege to know. I am quite particular & am very happy ! 😊😊😊😊😊 Thank you very very much !

Tim is excellent! And he did a fantastic job! We have worked with him before (this is our third time), recommend him to friends and family, and will definitely work with him again. Way back in 2013 we did a full home remodel and those contractors did a dreadful job on the walls. The texture was huge and gloppy, out of character with our 1945 home, and just poorly done. I'd been giving it the evil eye for years, but assumed it was cost prohibitive to fix. In comes Tim to save the day! He primed the terrible textured walls of our entire living area: Kitchen, Dining Room, Living Room, Hallway, and Bathroom. Then he did three coats of smooth skim coat to get rid of the terrible texture. Then we had him prime and paint the finished product. I can't even tell you how beautiful it looks!! We are SO grateful to finally have clean, consistently textured, beautiful walls. It seems like a small thing, but it makes all the difference feeling comfortable in our house. In the midst of planning this project, we also had a plumbing issue in the basement that required some drywall repair. Tim made it happen without a second thought.

Logan has helped me figure out the source of my kitchen ceiling leak and provided a sensible solution. I really appreciate how he is willing to repair and salvage existing material. His is very responsive and reliable. I trust the quality of his work. I have continued to hire him for several other projects like repairing my deck and extending my gutter system. I have been extremely satisfied.

Did an excellent job. They color-matched all my oak cabinets to match what was already in the kitchen. They worked with me in painting molding I had hung myself and in painting a set of cabinets that was veneer instead of real wood, and was difficult to get paint to adhere to. This makes up for them taking longer to start the job than first expected. Would hire again!

I would highly recommend him to anyone interested in getting tile work done. You will be more than pleased with his pricing and craftsmanship. I am already thinking about other areas in my house I might have him work on.

Victor got in touch with me and was able to come out to temporarily solve our issue with water. He git here just before 1pm and just left before 10pm. Turns out it was a tee in the hot water feed to the kitchen ssink and dishwasher split. The pipe is some sort of PVC and splitting as he kept trying to repair. He finally had to put an exterior sleeve around by bad pipe and then his replacement into the other side of the sleeve. We figured the pressure “thump” of hot water turn on/off plus some syof bad PVC (maybe it was exposed to UV before installation 21+ years ago?). Victor did not give up until we had water again and his repair will last!! I will definitely hire this company again and ask specifically for Victor!! I’m also going to call the company Monday and tell them what a great guy they have!

Josh has done an amazing job on all the work that he has done for us so far. He's done at least three different jobs for us in which the type of work was completely different than the last and in 3 different areas of the house ( kitchen, bathroom, shed.) I have yet to be anything less than pleased with the end results. In fact he has gone above and beyond on multiple occasions to make sure that we are getting exactly but we want. For being a single owned and operated business, Josh has been extremely efficient, providing excellent work at a fair price. Hes got wonderful time management skills and you can really tell he knows what he's doing. At the end of the day, you'd never be able to tell that all the work was done by one man and in such a timely manner at that. I will definitely be calling him again when it comes time for the next project we have planned for remodeling our home. 😊

We had Gavin do a variety of items (reconnect a bathroom vanity, hang a mirror, install bathroom items, install closet door guides, vertical blinds in the dining room, reconnect the kitchen sink, reconnect an electric cooktop and install smoke/carbon monoxide detectors). He was a great communicator before he arrived to verify the time he needed to arrive (had to coordinate with a countertop installer and carpet shampoo company). He arrived on time, very personable and asked if there was any additional work. Gavin is very nice and performed everything on our list without hesitation.

Steve and his crew did a wonderful job of making our vision for our kitchen a reality. We kept our existing cabinetry and hired DNA to update our kitchen, including removing a pocket door and half wall to open up our 1966 daylight ranch upstairs floor plan. Great attention to detail was appreciated in doing our remodel. The tile work was done beautifully and care was taken to keep our home clean throughout the project. We have just hired them again to remodel 2 bathrooms. Many thanks to Steve and his team for helping us update and customize our home.

"JR was very professional and friendly. He was answered all of our questions at the estimate visit. The estimate was complete, including detailed drawings of the remodel which made it easy to see the vision of the completed remodel (we got 4 estimates in total for our kitchen remodel, all of the other contractors wanted to charge for any drawings of the remodel AND we would only get them after we signed a contract). JR met with us to pick out the granite and answered many (and I do mean a lot) of our questions about the process of the remodel. The estimate for the remodel was exact, and there wasn't any additional or hidden fees in our remodel. We love our new kitchen. We will recommend Accurate Construction to all of family and friends. Thank you James and Angie Anderson

Our kitchen was gutted due to a flood, and we chose Kitchen Concepts to redo it for us based on meeting with Dave Warren and several recommendations from other contractors and customers. Dave designed our new layout, and we purchased our cabinets, sink, and granite countertops from him. Installation was done in a reasonable timeframe and though there were several small problems that cropped up, Dave and his subs resolved each as quickly as possible and we were quite satisfied! The new layout works beautifully for us, and the finished work is stunning! Dave knows his business, we love our new kitchen, and we would happily work with Dave again!

It was my lucky day when I contacted Summit Design LLC for an appraisal for a kitchen remodel. I interviewed several companies, and when I met Dima and Vik Koslov, it was easy to tell that they were the best and I had no hesitation in hiring them. The Koslov's worked with me to assure that the remodeling of my kitchen (something I had dreamed about for several years) would be completed in a very strict timeline and within a strict budget. They were extremely helpful in all aspects, even so far as to pushing me around in a wheelchair to pick out the new interior for my kitchen. Not only are they pure gentlemen, but they put in overtime to complete the project on time and always responded to any phone calls I made to them, any changes made and any ideas that I wanted implemented, that had not been on the original plans. Summit Design is extremely professional in all aspects and you can be sure that they will do the best job for you, no matter what it entails. I cannot give them enough praise for all they accomplished. I would be most happy and privileged to provide any references for them. You will definitely be happy to hire Summit Design at any time. Dima Koslov has done a remarkable job at developing his company, and I am so happy that I was privileged to hire them. Thank you Dima and Vik for everything. Nancy M Dezsofi

He did an amazing job!! So glad to use this service. It was easy to schedule and he got our commercial kitchen done quickly. We had an emergency and couldn't get our kitchen done before the company opened but the Ikea specialist came to the rescue and got it done asap. Thanks again!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
