Ben worked with us extremely well as another contractor on our remodeling project had numerous setbacks and schedule changes. Ben adjusted to when we needed him. Quality work, and we plan to use him on more things around our house.

I cannot say enough about the workmanship of DP Electrical. We bought a foreclosure that needed a lot of TLC and updating. Over the last year, we have had several contractors helping us with the projects that are out of our comfort zone. I have to say Dave is a credit to his profession and we appreciated his knowledge and willingness to answer questions and help us make an outbuilding safe and useable. We will be using DP Electrical again, without hesitation.

The contractor installed a pedestal sink, replaced the toilet seal, repaired the tub opening and closing device. He was efficient, clean, friendly and polite. He came at the time he said and he stayed with the job until finished.

We were looking for a complete tear out and redo of our bathroom and building a walk-in closet in out master bedroom. Of the 4 contractors we reviewed they were the most organized and professional. The work donewas excellent and they always met their time line for completion of tasks. Their attention to the smallest detail was amazing and it shows in the quality of their work. The employees that worked at our house were extremely courteous and professional. We could not be happier with our experience and we will definitely use them for our basement buildout this summer.

David & his team at JDM did a phenomenal job remodeling our bathroom on a budget. They gutted the original builders bathroom where there had been a leak in the shower behind the tile. They installed all new fixtures, including new vanity, new exhaust fan, new toilet, new sink/top, new vanity light, primed and color change the walls and ceiling. The tile work is FaNtAsTiC with custom niche in the shower. Their design suggestions regarding the tile, tile trim, and appointments helped us receive a much nicer bathroom than ANY of the other contractors we spoke to would have done for the budget... Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

I called and spoke to Brian, the contractor, on a Monday about a custom mailbox that I needed to be constructed on my house. He came out the next day and properly told me how much time he needed to find all the components and the custom paint in order to comply with the home owners association regulations. The job was done in less time than estimated, his craftsmanship was impressive and he was very diligent. The final cost of the mailbox was reasonable and cost effective compared to the rest of contractors in the area. I rate this contractor 5 stars. I will l hire them for future work and recommend him to my neighbors.

We couldn't be happier with Jeremy and J&S Exterior! He came out and advised us about what he could do with our siding both repairs with painting or siding. Then left it up to us which way to go with more information than we had been given by 4 other contractors. We chose the siding and it is beautiful and done with professionalism and on time. Thanks 😊

We took on a rather large project in our new home, which included a full kitchen remodel, not done by MasterCraft - and what I can say is that Eddie and his team were by FAR the best contractors we worked with during this process. He was extremely helpful and communicative - any time I needed something, he responded quickly and entirely. Outside of that - his pricing was extremely fair and he did a top-notch, job. Every detail was gone over to ensure that it met both my and his standards. There was a complete transformation made to our home in a timely fashion, and Eddie was also up front with what was going on. I never felt as though we were being slighted or that the work done did not match our expectations. In fact, everything exceeded the expectations and we even enlisted Eddie to do a few other things. We wish we had even MORE in our home for him and his team to do because they did such a fantastic job.

I hired Rick and Room 2 Room to replace windows and clean a house in Pleasant Prairie. As an attorney that represents every major general contractor in Chicago, I was hopeful that Rick and his crew could pull off a very difficult job in short time and at a reasonable price. Let me tell you, they not only did everything with excellence, but also within budget and in time. None of my clients would have come close! I can't give a higher rating, but I wish I could. Room 2 Room is the best!

Larue and his son are a pleasure to work with. I have worked with many contractors over the years and Larue is different. He is professional, a great communicator and takes pride in his work. He replaced the sink and countertop in my laundry room and it looks beautiful. He is a hard worker and trustworthy. Hire him :)

Hello, My sister recommended me to have GTC/Steamatic do repairs painting and mold removal for our house. Most of the mold was located in a closet off the kitchen and we wanted the first floor painted. The job was done in about 3 weeks as they had to rebuild an archway from the living room to dining room. We are very happy with all the work done and Bo gave us the best price with a bundle discount compared to the other contractors. Otherwise we wouldn't have gotten to rebuild the archway. My new furniture arrives next week and it looks like a total remodel I highly recommend Bo Tony and Marina for any project you've got going on in your home!

My husband and I had been planning a tub-to-shower conversion for awhile but were not looking forward to dealing with the mess and issues that come with home improvement projects. We met with Dennis (the owner of Bath Consultants Inc.) and he was able to put together a design and estimate on the 1st visit. His estimate was much lower than other contractors and he was able to answer all our questions and concerns so we hire him. When it was time to install the shower his team was able to complete the project in 1 day and they did an excellent job. We strongly recommend using Bath Consultants Inc.. The workers were very careful, clean and hauled away all the old material. They made our bathroom project stress-free and beautiful. Attached is photo of our finished shower.

I cannot say enough good things about these guys. This is my first house and the roof needed replacing immediately. There was water coming in through the ceiling and walls. I was furious at the home inspector ("well the bowl [in the attic] was dry when we saw it..."), scared about being a homeowner and living alone in the city, and didn't know a thing about finding reputable contractors. Enter Jason. He showed up, we hit it off immediately, and he gave it to me straight. Unlike some of the other bidders, he didn't resort to scare tactics or sweet talk and flattery- much appreciated. He answered all my questions, discussed all the pros and cons of various shingles, venting systems, and materials, and was overall amazing. I feel like the price was very fair, and I got a great deal. The crew very carefully moved flower pots and bird feeders out of the way, swept up all debris (including on my neighbor's yard!) and carted away all the old shingles for recycling. Not only is it a major relief to have a solid roof over my head, but I feel 100% confident in the job and will absolutely be calling them again if I need any repairs or remodeling!

Nick and his crew of contractors did a great job on my kitchen remodel. I knew what I wanted and he was open to my ideas and the project turned out wonderful. I just had them back to gut and install the master bath. Again very satisfied with their work.

Mike rebuilt a front porch on my house that was falling apart from water damage and poor original construction. Mike worked day and night rebuilding the structure and suggested employing better made and more efficient raw materials. The rebuilt porch looks great and although new, has held up beautifully during recent rain and snow events. I have also used mike to do some general repairs and modifications to my house and I’ve been most pleased with the overall high quality workmanship employed. With Mike, you’ll get outstanding results at a fair price, and the job will be completed in a timely manner.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.
