Jon and his crew were absolutely amazing. Let me caveat this by saying I have never been as impressed as I have been with my experience with Jon and his crew! They sanded every imperfection out of the floors. We have red oak and ended up going with espresso to darken them. We are going with the theme of white trim, gray walls, and black doors and preferred the look of dark floors over the traditional lighter look found in many homes in our area. They absolutely take pride in their work, they did our entire house, four bedrooms with closets, living room, dining room, stairs, and upstairs landing area. It turned out amazing. We were concerned about the darkness of the color, so we were really picky...Jon fielded my late evening and early morning texts during our decision making period. His crew was absolutely timely, professional, and very nice. I spent weeks looking through reviews on Thumbtack, but once we met Jon, it just seemed like a slam dunk easy decision! Very competitively priced! Jon is honest, you just don't find that with any old contractor! I absolutely positively, undoubtedly recommend Jon for your hardwood floor project. Look at his reviews, they all express their extreme happiness for his work. If I could give more stars I absolutely would have! Thanks Jon and his team!

David & his team at JDM did a phenomenal job remodeling our bathroom on a budget. They gutted the original builders bathroom where there had been a leak in the shower behind the tile. They installed all new fixtures, including new vanity, new exhaust fan, new toilet, new sink/top, new vanity light, primed and color change the walls and ceiling. The tile work is FaNtAsTiC with custom niche in the shower. Their design suggestions regarding the tile, tile trim, and appointments helped us receive a much nicer bathroom than ANY of the other contractors we spoke to would have done for the budget... Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

We had the pleasure of having Tech Tile Inc remodel our Master Bedroom/Master Bath and install a wooden floor. José was very professional and patient with my husband and I. They did an excellent job on the remodel. I highly recommend Jose and his team for what ever your project may be, big or small. José goes the extra mile to make sure that you are pleased and is the one to trust. I love the work he did and we are planning on having him do other projects for us. Please consider Tech Tile Inc first before choosing anyone else

Absolutely fabulous! We had a really great experience working with Master Craft & Design. They remodeled both our guest bathroom and deck in July 2018. Both projects exceeded our expectations!! Ed and his crew showed up on time every day and were very professional and friendly. They treated our house as if it were their own - taking care of the space and cleaning up at the end of every day. They were like family when they were in our home. In fact, we miss having them around! Both projects were finished on time and very close to our original quote. Ed was also very responsive and accommodated all of my requests which was important to me. The bathroom included updating the plumbing, laying new tile in the shower and floor and repairing the drywall. The bathroom is gorgeous and the attention to detail with the tilework was amazing. Josh offered his design suggestions along the way and we were so thankful for that since we had never done a remodel before. Ed and his crew took our small crappy deck and turned it into a true outdoor sanctuary! They reinforced the old frame, replaced all of the deck boards, added a ton of new square footage, and gave us a gorgeous new railing. Every time I walk now outside my heart smiles. We absolutely love our new deck and enjoy spending time out there! We couldn’t be happier with the way both projects turned out. I would highly recommend Master Craft & Design. We will definitely be using them again in the future!

LaRue was awesome! He was able to comeby quickly (within 24 hrs of contact) and did a great job installing insulation in our basement that was required by the City of Racine. Very friendly, personable and very knowledgeable. He will be the handyman we turn to first for future projects. We highly recommend him.

Hello, My sister recommended me to have GTC/Steamatic do repairs painting and mold removal for our house. Most of the mold was located in a closet off the kitchen and we wanted the first floor painted. The job was done in about 3 weeks as they had to rebuild an archway from the living room to dining room. We are very happy with all the work done and Bo gave us the best price with a bundle discount compared to the other contractors. Otherwise we wouldn't have gotten to rebuild the archway. My new furniture arrives next week and it looks like a total remodel I highly recommend Bo Tony and Marina for any project you've got going on in your home!

Hard working crew of four. We had a special request regarding moving a section of carpeting from the living/dining room to the back hallway. FCI accommodated that request and we can barely see where the "new" carpeting joins the carpeting in the bedrooms. The new hardwood floor looks fine and adds a new richness to our home. Michelle kept tabs on everything and went the extra mile for us.

As a repeat customer of the Floorstore, I highly recommend them for your carpet and floor needs. Over the years I have had carpet, vinyl flooring and hardwood floors installed by them. They have always have a great selection, done excellent installation, stayed on schedule, and cleaned up before leaving. I will definitely use the Floorstore again and have and will continue to share their name with my friends.

We are currently in the planning stages of our project and will begin work in June. Thus far, Chris and Jason have been simply amazing. We are planning a total reno of our backyard and were not quite sure what we wanted to do. Premier Service Group came out and looked at our yard and within a few days came back with computer generated images of a base plan so we could envision how it would look. We discussed different options and they were very helpful with knowledgeable suggestions that made it a lot of fun to work with them, no stress. Chris went above and beyond in researching safe options for our pets and foster dogs to be around. We are so looking forward to working with this group, cannot wait to see our finished product!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
