I hired Kari to help furnish a 2BR/1bath condo. We scheduled an initial consultation in which Kari came and checked out the condo and provided an estimate. When Kari arrived, she was very professional and I could see that she had a lot of experience with interior design, and had a great portfolio to show it. She brought up great points in the initial meeting and gave me a reasonable price for the services. Kari has a great personality and working with her was fun. She also came for a final inspection once all the items were bought and arranged to provide some final suggestions. I would definitely choose Kari again in the future!

Before I hired Weston I spent time to go see his work, let me just say; he is one of the best designers in this area and maybe in this country. I love what he did to my home, no one designs like him, and his design process is extraordinary – Wow! Is all I can think to say -- there is nothing like what he does even on the internet. Jane V.

We hired Tom in September for exterior painting as well as evaluating water damage below the large windows of our front bedroom and in our rear sunroom. Tom was a source of valuable information in regards to finding solutions to the problem that caused this damage and gave advise on how to correct other problems he found while looking at our home. This attention to detail, as well as stating he was able to save our windows is why both my husband and I made our decision to move forward with Tom vs the numerous contractors we had interviewed. The exterior painting was done carefully and areas of greater need were addressed until it met his satisfaction. Our exterior front bedroom wall is currently under construction. Steps are being taken to carefully remove the brick for use after the internal work has been done. The interior garage wall is open to prepare for the anchors that will support the brick that is pulling away. The back wall will be addressed after the completion of the front areas of our home. We will definitely follow up at the completion of our project.

This is our first home and we wanted it be perfect. We didn’t have a big budget and when we were browsing furniture, it seemed like we only liked the really expensive pieces and were unsure how it would all go together. We were worried that we would end buying all the wrong pieces, in wrong sizes, spend way more than we should, and end up with a cookie cutter, characterless house. So we decided to sign on Laura as our Interior Designer. The thing that stood out about her was that she really listened to what we wanted. Laura nailed the design in her very first presentation and we barely made any changes. She worked well within our budget and took our vision to the next level. We definitely couldn’t have done it ourselves. Signing her on was the best home decision we made. Our home looks absolutely wonderful - every piece of furniture is unique and yet everything just goes so well together. It's cool, modern, warm and homely all at the same time. Everyone who visits us compliments our home and our furniture! I would recommend her in a heartbeat. Laura really gets it. Not even once have we regretted hiring her. Honestly, I can't wait to work with her again!

Caryn is perfect! My parents worked with an interior designer when I was growing up, and I remember she would always push really fancy expensive furniture on them, so I was hesitant to hire someone when we bought our new home. Caryn understands that we are DIY people, and works with that, and our budget, in mind. She doesn't overcharge, and we got SO much done in our one-hour consult with her. She picked out paint colors for the whole house and I LOVE them. I would have spend hours agonizing over it had I picked them out myself. Worth every penny! I can't wait to use her over the years to design our home!

Stephanie is one of the most insightful interior decorators, I have ever met. She has a knack of selecting just the right items that are bold but not outlandish. She brings a distinctive look to every room while maintaining a warm, natural feel that delivers enjoyment in a home or even an office. I am truly amazed at her attention to detail and the completeness she brings to every project.

I have been lucky enough to work with Esther on a number of projects. Esther has overseen the interior design of a number of new homes that were developed for individuals with disabilities. Esther created homes that were not only aesthetically stunning, but also functional and practical. No matter the challenge, Esther was able to find a creative and pleasing solution. With her lead on the projects, we were able to create homes that, according to our licensing agency, are "model homes - some of the best in Illinois". Esther was able to help us achieve that-- all while staying well under budget! I would highly recommend Premier Home Staging and ReDesign Consultants for any project. Esther is a dedicated, energetic and fun person and will work closely with you to create a warm and wonderful environment that reflects your own desires and personality.

Meg recently helped me design a shared boys room on a tight budget, and it is simply adorable! I have been following her blog, Peaches and Cake, for a long time and love her ideas. She helped me every step of the way, from creating an inspiration board to sending detailed links to all items she recommended purchasing on places ranging from Craigslist to Land of Nod. We designed the room completely via long distance - with lots of photo taking. She walked me through each purchase and how it would fit into the overall design of my sons' room. She has great taste and anytime I had a problem or question, she went above and beyond to find solutions to my design issues. She was very timely in all of her communications with me and I would definitely work with her again.

In & Out Design is really a wonderful company. I worked with Mary from In & Out Design the past couple years on creating a new landscape design for my entire property. The design has turned out so beautiful that I decided to work with Mary on updating the interior of my 1970’s home. She created a design for redecorating my outdated family room, kitchen, living room and dining room. I needed to keep costs to a minimum so Mary suggested we utilize some furnishings and accessories from throughout the house to "redesign" my interior spaces. We then purchased some new accessories and a much needed new sectional for the family room. This method really helped update the entire look of my four rooms while keeping me within my budget. The fee Mary charged was well worth the savings I incurred and I ended up with comfortable, beautiful, and functional spaces that we will enjoy for many years.

Excellent service, upfront and honest off the bat. We were looking for an interior designer to really alleviate the hassle of moving into a new home. We were low on time and wanted someone who would manage a project from start to finish. David's offer was to do a free consultation in home with a full walk through free of charge, and his website laid out how the entire process will work so it was 100% up front. From a project managers perspective, that's perfect. We are looking forward to working with David on creating our home and will leave a post review of how things went. Expecting things to go really well.

I'd love to recommend Magin to anyone who needs interior design work. Magin designed and sewed window treatments for me for an unusually large and too bright living room window. The result is classy and keeps the "airy" feeling in the room, just as I had wanted. Magin put me at ease so I could ask all the Qs I needed to. She has a great eye for interesting and contemporary style. Magin's cost estimate was right on, too. So refreshing. What really helped me was doing lots of the prep work on computer because I have such a busy schedule. One last remark, Magin's fresh ideas for my project just delighted me!

We had Claire come to help consult us on paint and siding color choices. Unlike other designers we had tried to work with, Claire was quick to respond, on time, and available on short notice. She went through most of our rooms and provided not just advice on paint color choices, but suggested changing some of the bulb types to improve the lighting (and paint appearance). We were very pleased with her services and would use her again for future projects.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

    • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
    • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
    • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
    • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

    • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
    • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
    • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
    • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
