I met Delores at a writing conference. I am a professional editor and Writing Coach. There I was facilitating a discussion on creating a proposal. She shared her work with me and the writing was solid, the topic well thought out and her obvious expertise was impressive. I meet dozens of writers every year in my line of work and Delores is an excellent writer, teacher and presenter.

Laura worked with me on an extensive book project on contemporary art for the University of Lüneburg, and her profound grasp of the subtleties of language was invaluable, particularly in editing such complex subject matter. As a translator it is extremely important to me to be able to work with a good editor, who is not only technically versed in grammar and punctuation, but also approaches each text with sensitivity and understanding, as Laura Freeburn certainly does.

After my session with Dorothy I went back to an article I had written and was able to edit it in one shot! With all of the notes I took from our session I gained a better understanding of where my areas of opportunity were to improve. She is a phenomenal teacher & excellent writer! Dorothy you saved my blog!

I’m very pleased to recommend Liz Richards as a ghost writer for your project. You will find that she is not only a talented writer but also a hard worker and highly ethical. Liz is an experienced writer who knows grammar inside and out. It is, however, her ability to work together that would set her apart for your project. In my experience, not all good writers are good collaborators. While working together, I discovered that she was especially skilled at listening to my ideas and asking pertinent questions before encapsulating my thoughts into concise, readable text. It sometimes felt like she could see inside my head and put it down on paper. I was also impressed by her stamina. If a draft was needed quickly, she put in the extra hours to be sure it was done correctly and on time. She offered thoughtful suggestions for changes without making me feel obligated to accept. Sometimes her suggestions prompted a conversation that uncovered ideas that neither one of us had previously thought of. All of this made her extremely easy to work with. Finally, ethics are critical because writing is a very personal endeavor. To be frank, you need to be able to trust the person you are working with to help communicate your ideas without without sharing them elsewhere. You can trust Liz Richards. She has a deep faith and a strong moral compass. I think she’s great and look forward to working together with her again in the future.

I’m writing this letter to recommend Sarah Dorfman for your current employment opportunities. When I was the Marketing Manager at The Wharf Marketplace in Monterey, California, I hired Sarah to write for the website, menus, and marketing materials. She is an excellent writer and detailed editor; a combination I was having trouble finding. After working with Sarah on those projects I realized her skills in other areas that I was becoming too busy to handle. She set our social media in motion and was not only successful at growing our likes and followers, but she was great at starting conversations and getting people to interact with our brand. At the time The Wharf Marketplace was a new business and Sarah had a major role in helping us stay on brand, gain loyal customers, earn the respect of fellow business partners. Sarah was very valuable to me, and I’m confident you would have the same results. Sincerely, Carrie Crook Former Marketing Manager for The Wharf Marketplace, Monterey, California. 2013-2015

I have worked with Steve on a variety of projects, as a contributor to his anthologies (he's a fine editor) and as a collaborator on stories. He has always displayed a great attention to detail and produces excellent work (check out his "Blue Kingdoms" series where he has designed covers, edited others and contributed fiction. First rate work and a perfect trifecta of skills). When I developed the idea for a serial fiction series, Steve was one of two writers I asked first to contribute.

Carla is a savvy communications guru who is astute, personable, motivational and authentic. She does more to help reposition and brand a business in three hours than others can in three days. I have benefited immensely from my association with Carla and would highly recommend her to anyone who is looking for an energetic, creative, hard-working writer or speaker, and overall authority on communications, and someone who provides practical tools that really work. In terms of the services she provides my small business, she was able to quickly assess areas of need and develop a plan to increase my customer base by creating clear and consistent messages across all social media platforms. Carla streamlined my business by bringing all the loose ends together, facilitating focus groups, gathering and sorting through the data to create a cohesive brand that is easily understood by my niche.

    About

The most difficult part of writing has nothing to do with writing. I've said this to myself as various points in my writing career for various reasons. I'm interested in helping others travel this same path. Besides writing a blog and publishing short stories, I’ve spent years in different writing groups, attending writing conferences as well as webinars. I pride myself on professional and individualized service and am ready to help you with your book. I can help with all aspects of the writing process, from brainstorming new ideas to polishing a final draft and from developing author websites to writing agent queries.

    About

I am an author of 50 novels (listed on Amazon.com, and elsewhere.) I have also written scores of nonfiction articles, fiction and nonfiction educational texts. Most recently I ghostwrote a book-length autobiography/history, WE WERE BERLINERS (The History Press, 2012.) I have worked extensively as a collaborative writer, and specialize in transcribing other people's ideas and rough drafts into smooth and compelling prose.

    About

I offer you over 25 years of computer technical training and experience with specialties in Windows, MS-Office, desktop and laptop computers, databases and lists (Excel, MS-Access, etc.) and web-based research. Virtual Office Admin Assistance I am available at home with an excellent workstation that can do most any computer task requiring powerful processing, a 22" HD widescreen and a stable broadband connection. Basic Image Processing I have minimal graphical and image processing skills if you just need your photo made into a banner, a Facebook cover page or fit any other need with specific image requirements. I can get an image ready for eBay, Facebook, Twitter or placement on a web page to fit size specifications using either Windows Paint or GIMP. Tasks I Can Do I can convert a scanned PDF to text or Excel and be sure the conversion is correct. I can search UPCs via web or desktop database file search. I am also familiar with online public data search as much of my data entry experience was entering mortgage data from 2006 to 2014. I know how to use GIS, Google Maps and other graphical applications. Computer Technical Help I have worked with desktop PC's since 1987. Laptops since 2006. If your computer is having issues, I can help you resolve it while you attend to other tasks. I may not be able to fix it myself, but can, at the very least establish what the problem is and then determine the next step to take before having to remove your computer from your home or office to a full-service repair shop. My method would be to get an assessment of the problem by phone or email. Then I come to your home or office with a means to address the most likely cause of the problem (such as malware). My focus is completing complicated, challenging tasks to your satisfaction with quality in mind while you focus on your business or other tasks. Don't let a bad computer or difficult computer task ruin your day. Give me a call, contact me on Facebook or send an email and I will deal with it.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

    • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
    • Strong writing skills.
    • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
    • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
    • Expertise in your target area.
    • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

    • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
    • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
    • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
    • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
