Introduction: I customize piano and flute lessons for you based on how you learn - music is way more fun when you truly understand what you're doing! I have a ridiculous sense of humor. I believe in stickers, high fives, and celebratory fist-bumps. That goes for the adults as well! For middle-school through adult students, I have devised a program that allows you to become fluent in reading 4 octaves of music in only one month! It's great to get the difficulty of reading out of the way so you can focus on the fun of playing. I always looked forward to my lessons because they were so fun, even if I knew I hadn't practiced enough. That is exactly what I try to create for every student I work with. Besides the humor, I customize lesson plans to fit you. Not just the types of music you want to learn, but HOW you learn. My number one goal is that you completely understand what you are learning. I don't mind in the least if I need to explain a new lesson 10 different ways - we will work together until you really get it! Understanding what you're doing makes it so much more fun.

I have been learning piano with Kat for a year and all my experience with her are wonderful! I started with zero musical background and Kat is super patient and helpful and she makes every lesson lots of fun! I will highly recommend Kat as a piano teacher to everyone!

Kat is an amazing piano teacher. My daughter was completely disenchanted with piano with her previous teacher. Every class day there were tears and sudden tummy aches. Practicing. Ughhhh, only with many bribes. Kat used flash cards, laughter, and chooses music that Isabella wants to learn. I definitely recommend Kat Downs!!

Kat is awesome! I've been taking lessons with her for several years now. She brings the academia that comes with being a classically trained pianist as well as the experience and energy (and awesomeness) of a contemporary rock musician. And perhaps most importantly, she's a lot of fun to hang out with! Lessons with Kat are educational, fun, and motivating.

Kat is a fabulous piano teacher! I am so happy I found her. I'm getting back into piano after decades, and finally learning to read music, and she has been an excellent teacher- patient, encouraging and fun! She works with kids and adults, and as soon as my son is old enough I will have him take lessons from Kat too. She's awesome!! :D

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
My rate is $70 per hour pro-rated ($35 for 30 min, $53 for 45 min) for younger kids I recommend 30 minutes to start. For older kids and adults I recommend 45 minutes because adults ask more questions and those 30 minutes fly by! A lot of times I do have adult students that start at 30 minutes and then increase to 45 or an hour as well.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
At the first lesson, I will ask you a LOT of questions to help me create a plan that is just for you! Then we decide together what pace you want to go at. That goes for kids as well - we work as a team!
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a BA in Music from St. Norbert College in DePere, WI. I'm also a current Gold Status teacher through Take Lessons.com I teach part of the week in San Francisco and part of the week near Santa Cruz and the surrounding areas.
