Brian Phelps (Clear Choice Roofing and Construction, LLC) was awesome. He and his assistant were professional and friendly. Not only did they complete the task at hand for a negotiated rate, but they pointed out other issues that could improve our home and made repair recommendations. We will definitely select them again.

I worked construction work to help pay for my Civil Engineering degree from Auburn University. After graduation, I have worked as a consulting engineer, a contractor, and a civil servant for over 51 years. my 56 years total construction experience has taught me that a good contractor will carefully follow the instructions of the architect or engineer, while a great contractor will offer suggestions based on his or her years of experience, and then do exactly what the architect or engineer says to do. A great architect or engineer will consider the contractors’ suggestions, apply applicable code and sound engineering principles, and guide the contactor accordingly. Dycus Construction is a great contractor. His years of experience in all phases of home construction proved valuable on this project.

With the heavy rain we had on Oct. 10th we developed a small leak in our 1/2 bath ceiling and wall. I wasn't sure of the source of the leak and since I didn't know any roofing contractors I immediately entered a Thumbtack request for local roofers. After submitting our request Bryan contacted us within minutes and we set up a roof inspection for the next day at 2:00 pm. Bryan called me back around noon and said he was in the area asking if he could come early! He showed up exactly when he said he would and inspected our roof completely, finding no roof issues that could cause our leak. It's nice to find a local contractor who's prompt and honest these days. I wouldn't hesitate to call him back for any roof related work.

To date, Rick and his team have completed three jobs for me: 1) Replace rotten garage door opening trim board and paint to match as well as fix a loose shingle and flashing around my chimney, 2) New replacement double gate and replace several boards on my fence, 3) Stain new gate and replaced boards. I can be a tough customer. As an engineer, I expect work to be done to my standards - as I would do it. Not only did Advanced Roofing Solutions complete all of these tasks on time and on budget, but the quality of their work was excellent. I have found Rick and his team to be honest and trustworthy people who take pride in their work, and it shows. They will be back in the Fall to stain my entire fence. I have found it difficult to find a company here in Huntsville that does good work at a reasonable price. My search is over. There is no question that I would call Advanced Roofing Solutions for any work I need taken care of around the house.

I was hesitant to use a service like Thumbtack for such a major job, but couldn't be happier with the results. Tom, Bentley, and their crew were responsive, professional, competent, and efficient. Tom was very patient while my wife and I pestered him for additional shingle samples before making our decision. He was also proactive in working with my insurance company to ensure his already competitive quote resulted in minimal out-of-pocket expense to me. Best of all, my new roof is tight as a drum and looks fantastic. The job was done in a day and a half, and the crew left hardly any evidence they'd been there; I've yet to find a single nail in my yard. I'd wholeheartedly recommend BP Construction for any residential roofing job.

Roof Tech was originally hired to do a small project of finishing and painting my laundry room walls. The job was so beautifully completed with an extra touch of air freshener added to the paint so that my house did not have the paint odor, that I talked to him about applying my backsplash once the cabinets were installed. I also talked to him about a roof and door issue that we had been having for years. Both estimates far exceeded my expectations and the work was performed in a very meticulous, professional, and timely manner. His crew were very respectful and professional. They were on time and cleaned up after ward, including going over our yard several times with a magnet to pick up loose nails. Mike Raby is a pleasure to work with. He's very professional and takes obvious pride in the end product/job. I could not ask for a better contractor to work with. He gave advice when needed and displayed integrity, knowledge and concern in our satisfaction of the completed job. My husband and I will definitely be hiring him again for future projects. And we highly recommend him and his company to friends neighbors and strangers. We truly appreciate Mike.

I originally hired Sam and his crew to complete a remodel on my master bath. I received bids from several contractors. Not only was Sam well under in price, but his overall demeanor and customer service made me feel instantly at ease. Throughout the project, Sam and his crew were professional, courteous, and overall a pleasure to work with. The bathroom turned out so amazing that I hired them a few months later to build a screened in porch off the back of the house. Once again, the quality and value were top notch. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Pro Building Solutions to my friends and family and will be calling them in the future for any of my projects, big or small. They are the only contractor in Huntsville I’ll use!!

Chris and his company installed a new metal roof on my father's home for us. They were professional, courteous and timely. It'sgood to see that there are still contractors that are willing to help and not just after your money.

The guys at Camko Roofing did a phenomenal job at putting a new roof on our home. The crew showed up the day after I hired them. They covered the landscaping along the house with tarps and were immediately removing the old roof. The new roof was completely finished the same day. the last time that we had a new roof put on, the contractor left a lot of trash behind, so I was very happy to see that I could not find one single scrap of trash after the crew left. The supervisor, Will, came by our house at least 3 times throughout the day to check on the progress. He was there as they were finishing up and asked my husband and I to walk around the house with him and make certain that everything looked good to us. It did! The roof looks fabulous! Also, at my request, they added "ridge vent" and got rid of the huge, ugly vents that were on our roof before. We would implore anyone to highly consider Camko Roofing for their next roof! I have scheduled for them to come back out next week to tear down and rebuild our back deck. Thank you so much for your great work and your lack of pushiness:)

Daniel and his crew did an excellent job on replacing my roof. They were able to remove many layers of shingles and decking in a fast and professional manor. Service after the sale was also good. When I noticed a small problem days later, his crew came out immediately and fixed it. Competitive prices too.

I had a tree fall and damage part of the roof. Southern Pride responded quickly to cover it and prevent more damage. They repaired the roof, gutters, and trim promptly. The price was fair, the repair was quick and professional.

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a standing seam metal roof?

A standing seam metal roof may be a strong, durable, safe choice when you’re considering metal roofing installation options. A standing seam refers to the raised seam where the sheet metal roofing panels join. Traditionally, shingles and roof panels lie flush to the roof, making them more prone to rust or penetration by water at their seams. In a standing seam metal roof, the raised (or standing) seams run vertically from the roof ridge to the eaves, with no horizontal seams. In addition, the fasteners joining the metal panels together are concealed, providing even fewer opportunities for water or moisture to build up. The cost to install a standing seam metal roof will depend on the type of metal you select, the size of your roof, and the cost of roofing labor in your region. Materials will play a major role in your metal roofing installation costs. If you select standard galvanized steel, the cost per square (100 square feet) might be in the $150-$300 range, while a high-end choice such as copper or zinc could be between $1,000 and $1,500 per square. Here is one example of cost:

      • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
        • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.

Can a metal roof be installed over shingles?

Metal roofs are durable, environmentally friendly, safe and budget-friendly. If you’re considering an update, metal roofing installation doesn’t have to mean completely removing your old roof. In many cases, metal roofing can be installed over your existing shingles. Research building codes in your state, as many require that after two roofs have been installed, all roofing materials must be completely removed before a third roof can be put on. This protects your home’s structural integrity and your family’s safety. Carefully read contractor reviews and choose someone with extensive experience with metal roofing installation. One concern when installing metal over shingles is that over time, condensation can build on the shingles and cause the metal to rust. This will lead to rust around the panels, making them more likely to come loose in a storm. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000. The wide price range represents different roof sizes, different types of metal, and the cost of labor in different parts of the country — and can also include the cost of removing an old shingle roof prior to installing the metal. As a line item, the average cost of removing an old roof to prepare for installing a new roof, plus adding new roof decking, costs on average about $45-$75 per square (the pro roofer’s term for 100 square feet), depending on the pitch of the roof. Always make sure you have a clearly written contract and a warranty on both the labor and the metal.

How much does it cost for a metal roof?

Metal roofing installation is an attractive option thanks to metal’s long lifespan, hardiness and fire-retardant properties. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000.There are different types of metal roofs, each with their own installation needs and materials costs. Roof size also affects your metal roofing installation costs, as do regional labor rates. Roof size is measured in squares; one square equals 100 square feet. Here are some examples of the average cost for a metal roof:

      • Standard metal roof: $120-$150 per square to start, including materials and labor
        • A 30-square roof (a 3,000-square-foot roof) could cost between $3,600 and $4,500 for a typical three-bedroom home.
      • Snap-Loc metal roof: $200-$225 per square to start, including materials and labor.
        • A 30-square roof could cost $6,000-$6,750.
      • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
        • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.
      • Tuff-Rib metal roof: $250-$350 per square to start, including materials and labor.
        • A 30-square roof could cost $7,500-$10,500.
      • Mid-range metal roof package, including all accessories: $300-$500 per square.
        • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000-$15,000.
      • High-end metal roof package — such as zinc or copper — and all accessories: $1,000-$1,500 per square.
        • A 30-square roof could cost $30,000-$45,000.
