Yesterday I had a problem and I called a large AC repair firm who came out and inspected my AC system that was making a loud noise when I turned it on cool for the first time this year. During the inspection while the technician was tinkering, the system got quiet and started working normally. When I asked the technician what he did to fix it, he avoided answering me and just said "that was strange." He turned the compressor off and continued on with his inspection including the air exchange unit inside the house. When done, he informed me that my compressor was dead and needed to be replaced at over $3500. Since that was a blow to my savings, he offered an extended payment plan on a new system for $8500 that had a 10-yr warranty, which he pitched as a better deal than spending $3500 on my used system. In March 2011, I installed a new 5-Ton Trane Heat Pump with Air Handler, but I did not get the extended warranty, so the limited warranty was up in July 2016. Regardless, this technician informed me that my system was dead and these were my 2 options, $3500 or $8500. I told him that I was in shock and needed some time. The next day I came to Thumbtack and found Jonathon Morgan of J and J HVAC. I explained to Jon what happened and he said he could be out between 4:30PM and 5:00PM today. He showed up just after 4:30PM. We set the thermostat to cool and went outside to start the compressor since the tech did something to keep it off. Jon's assistant pulled a panel and found the cover to the start solenoid removed. When they fired up the unit , it sounded quiet and was pulling the hot air from inside the house out through the fan. I ran inside and checked that the AC was putting out cold air and went back and told Jon that it was working fine. All along the only problem was the loud noise. Jon suggested that removing the start cover is what the technician did the day before that made the unit run quiet when I noticed that it began to work normally, and explained the noise that these solenoids can make and surmised that the cover was at least part of the problem with the noise. He inspected the solenoid to be good and the compressor was humming along quietly and pumping hot air out of the house. So, we were both satisfied that the problem was resolved with the removal of the solenoid cover that Jon insisted was sufficient repair. Since he was in the neighborhood already, he wasn't even going to charge me to come by, but I have asked him to send me the bill and I will gladly pay it. Not sure if he will or not. In summary, the first company tried to sell me an expensive service that I didn't need, and worse, a new system claiming mine was out of warranty and defective and likely going to cost more down the road. Then Jon came along and like magic, my problem was resolved with a $40 service call. How amazing the difference between these two service companies. One is a rip off taking advantage of customers none the wiser. The other is a decent company bent on serving the customer with no more or no less than needed to resolve the problem. Do yourself a favor and stay away from these companies with big advertising budgets on TV. They're sleek and slick, winning your confidence with smiles and personality. This technician showed me everything he was doing and explained each step, up until the part when the unit got quiet and started working. And then he got as quiet as my fully functional 6 year old compressor, yet had the audacity to lie to me and tell me that it was broken. Jon from J and J HVAC is my new AC guy if ever I need service again. He won me over with his professional demeanor and excellent support to not sell me anything I didn't need. Thank God that I came into contact with Jonathon Morgan. I was really stressing out on spending $3500. And now I don't have too.

Dave installed a new 50 gallon gas hot water heater for me. His price and workmanship were very good. He arrived on time (early actually, which I appreciated) and made sure everything was working well before he left. I will definitely be calling him in the future for any plumbing repairs/installs, and possibly AC ones as well, since he also does AC work. Thanks Dave!

Daniel did a great job working with the Rheem part supplier. Sadly it would have been fixed fast if they had only believed him when he told them which part needed replacing. He was reasonably priced and made time for us in the evening when the right part finally arrived, so we could have hot water again.

The communication was very good, the price was fair, there were no surprises or delays and he was not creepy. I felt comfortable while he was in my home & he offered both to remove the old hot water heater as well as to guarantee his work. I would hire him again.

Kent was very professional and got the job done quickly. We also had our hot water heater replace by him on the same day as well. His pricing is very reasonable and would recommend him to any one. The one thing he did forget to do tho was turn the breaker back on to power the hot water heater back on. So we were with out hot water for a night. As we didn't notice it till late at night. But all in all it was what we needed

Charles is a lifesaver! He was the first person I ever hired through thumbtack and it made me a believer in the service-and have used it again because of him (successfully-different state though). I won't need Thumbtack again in AZ since Charles is now in my phone and does way more than I even knew when I first called him. My tenants had been without hot water for 3 days due to miscommunication and when I realized we needed someone, and quick, he arrived within 10 hours of our first call and did the work perfectly at an exceptionally reasonable price. I'm an out of state landlord and have been searching for Charles all my life (well at least the last 10 years). Now that I found him, I'll gladly share him with you but he's all mine forever; I'm ecstatic! Kind, courteous and flexible, you hardly find someone you can trust anymore but he's your man!

I had a potential buyer for my home and during the inspection it was noted that the hot water heater had corrosion and was on an improper base. To make matters worse, it was a 75 gallon water heater; not always in stock. Michael Defrates put in a very reasonable bid and performed the work within 48 hours. He brought everything with him and even did a terrific clean up job. His work is top notch and I highly recommend him. The potential buyers signed the contract thanks to his fast work.

Carlos replaced a hot water heater for us. Carlos was professional, friendly and very accommodating about answering all our questions. The job was done in a very timely manner and as quoted. His price was very good and although he had to replace some parts that he did not expect, there was no extra charge for this. I would not hesitate to recommend him.

I have used One Call Plumbing Services for about 8 years. They provide exceptional service, are technically knowledgeable and very professional. I have always had annual contracts which includes an annual inspection, access to 24/7 emergency services (which I have needed) and a discount on purchases. I trust their recommendations. Through One Call, I’ve had two toilets installed, drains repaired, shower repaired, and hot water heater replaced. I also learned about Bio One from them – an organic products used to keep my drains clean and running. It is a great product – without using harsh chemicals and I buy bottles with each annual check. I value that they are a locally owned business. I highly recommend them – I wouldn’t use any other plumbing service! Cyndi A

I was happy with the results of increased water pressure in our home. Micheal explained exactly what and why he was able to do some things and not others, and offered alternatives. Electronic invoices are convenient. I was called with an ETA before they arrived which I appreciated.

I discovered a leak in the hot water heater and posted on thumbtack about 1:30 PM. I chose to call West plumbing at 2:00 PM, Jim was here before 3:00 to inspect the heater. He checked to see if the heater was still under warranty and found it was still covered. He left to pick up new heater, returned and had to do some extra plumbing. All work was completed and the work area cleaned before 6:00 PM. I would recommend West Plumbing to everyone.

The company was very responsive and was able to send someone to help on a Sunday, when everyone else wanted me to wait until Monday to have my water heater fixed, which would have meant no hot water for the weekend. Gary really went above and beyond installing the water heater, configuring a difficult pipe connection without complaining or even discussing the problems as they came up. His expertise and experience was clear as he resolved every problem without skipping a beat. Gary was professional, so much more than competent, and cleared away everything after the job. I didn't lift a finger during or after the job. This is what customer service is supposed to be like. Well done.

I had an issue with my water softener that I was not comfortable with trying to fix (brine tank was full of water and would not drain). I found tons of companies through Google, but Thumbtack led me to Lifewater Solutions LLC. I called the phone number and talked to Scott about my dilemma, and from that point on everything was great. He was at my house first thing in the morning and everything was fixed, checked, and rechecked. I had such a great experience that I might just break something on purpose so that they can come back. Thank you, Scott!!

Super responsive and thorough. Had a small water issue and they jumped right on it within hours. Tech was very polite and knowledgeable. Left drying equipment in house overnight and picked up the next day. If the tech was representative of the company's overall performance, it's a very good company.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

When is it time to replace a water heater?

Although regular water heater maintenance and water heater repair may extend the life of your hot water heater, it won’t last forever. Most water heaters have a life expectancy of about 10 years. Many water heaters need to be replaced when they’re 8-12 years old — that’s when they start to show signs of fatal wear, such as leaking around the base of the tank. A water heater should be replaced when it fails to sufficiently heat water for the home; if your heater is operating erratically, check first for a blown fuse or a tripped breaker to make sure an electrical issue isn’t causing the problem. Another time to replace a water heater is when you want to upgrade to either a larger model or a more energy-efficient one.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

Who can fix a water heater?

When a water heater stops running effectively, it’s best to hire a water heater repair professional to troubleshoot the problem. Whether it’s a plumbing company that offers water heater repair services or a provider specializing in water heater repair and maintenance, most repair companies offer same-day service as well as weekend and after-hours emergency calls. Usually, water heater repair professionals are experts in both electric and gas systems, as well as tank and tankless heaters, and can repair any kind of unit.

Why is my hot water not working?

The most common complaint among homeowners is that their hot water isn’t working — and the water heater is generally the culprit. Typically, it isn’t making the water as hot as you’d like it to be. When the water isn’t hot enough — or isn’t hot at all — run through this troubleshooting checklist for basic water heater repair tasks:

  • Make sure the power is connected to the heater, then reset the thermostat.
  • If it’s a gas water heater, make sure the pilot light is lit.
  • Raise the temperature setting on the thermostat.

If these stops don’t lead to hot water, it’s time to either check the heating element in an electric water heater or the burner unit and gas control valve in a gas-powered heater. A water heater repair and maintenance company can handle these repair jobs. However, if your hot water heater is eight years or older, it may be time to replace the water heater instead of repairing it.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
