I'm 67 years old and have been on every diet program there is, with varying degrees of short term success. However, I have never achieved permanent weight loss. Now, for the first time in my life, I think about what I eat, I no longer overeat, I eat anything I want...just a lot less of it, I enjoy the taste of what I eat more than ever before...bottom line, I've lost 13 lbs of 40 and am confident this is a permanent change. I'm very happy and highly recommend Bob to anyone struggling with a difficult issue to overcome. 10 stars!!

I quit smoking thru hypnotherapy that Susan offers.. Its a Smoking Free program and it really works... The transformation in myself after this session was amazing on many different levels... I really can't describe all that happened as it is very emotional and very informative to me as a private therapy session can be.. BUT if you want to quit smoking or lose weight these sessions Susan offers are the way to go... Thank you Susan for all the wonderful tips and ways to continue my healthy path for living...

Honestly I am amazed at how effective this hypnotherapy/coaching stuff can be. I would definitely suggest going to individual sessions (had an ineffective experience with group hypnosis years ago). Also going with someone, like Jillian, who knows what they're doing because I tried this before & it didn't work. This was a last ditch effort to work on both some anxiety/depression & really quit smoking (I smoke when I am stressed and/or socializing or anxious). I amazed to feel like a totally functional normal happy human being after just 1 appointment! I haven't felt like this is a very long time. The smoking has been much easier to say no to for sure. The anxiety/depression is also better for sure with the exception of a single event & even it was much less debilitating. Also, we didn't even really 'focus' the appointment on anxiety/depression (we focused mostly on smoking). It has been several days & she did say it usually takes a few appointments so I'm going back again next week. With everything I've seen in the first week I am really looking forward to how much this is going to change things for me. Also I wanted to mention her office is absolutely lovely! I feel like it had a great look & 'feel' to it - or great 'energy' to it. I felt very comfortable opening up to her, and kind of felt like the space had something to do with it (if that makes any sense). P.s. this is her Tempe (or Mesa...the 1 off the 101 and 60) office. Apparently she has 1 in Phx as well. So far I really can't reccomend her more highly. I do plan to update after my next appointment(s).

"The Weight's Coming Off! I have to admit to being a bit skeptical regarding the effectiveness of hypnosis. However, I heard of Vera's expertise and her success rate and I decided to give hypnosis a try for my obesity. She spent a good amount of time chatting with me to determine what I desired from hypnosis. We agreed that better self-control with food was my goal. Being hypnotized by Vera was very relaxing. Her friendly, calm manner and soothing voice sent me into a deep trance, allowing her to easily work with me. I left her office feeling refreshed and determined to experience weight-loss success. And I am! I have lost an impressive amount of weight in the two weeks since my first session. She is available to further support me, as I know that multiple sessions are typically required for weight loss. Her hypnosis recording she provided has been helpful. And my self-control has amazed me. I am effortlessly able to say "No thank you" to treats and to avoid temptation and over-eating. Thanks, Vera! I am no longer a skeptic!" Sami Wood

I am so glad to be sharing the life changing experience I had while being a part of your class – Weight Loss through Self Love. My original expectation was to just be hypnotized to lose weight but what I actually received were tools to help me live a more joy filled life. Before attending the class I really did not know what it meant to “love myself” and I had been in a serious depression for over a year. Learning and applying EFT was the key to changing my life, I have never felt such freedom. EFT is now a wonderful tool that I have learned to apply to not only weight loss and exercise but to any area of my life. After years of diets that have not worked I can truly say the combination of the EFT and the hypnosis are the keys to losing weight for me. Your hypnosis was so powerful and effective that I can say with confidence that today, I love and accept myself. Thank you for helping me!

I came to see Thom for weight loss and during our discussion I told him that I have a huge fear of flying and require it in my business sometimes twice a week. Thom was great with my weight loss I lost 25 pounds first month and continued until I met my goal. My fear if flying was removed in one session, I fly now relaxed and look forward to the downtime. Great help. Thank you.

I went to see Dr. Martha for weight loss in 2013. Since then I have managed to keep the 60lbs from a size I lost off(18/20 down to a 10) While going to her office for weight loss I discovered a whole lot more of great services her office has to offer. I was able to work on myself from the inside out and I feel like I am a completely different person today. I am no longer scared to leave the house by myself, I embrace it! I wish I could clone her so she was able to help more people because she truly is a god send!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How does hypnosis work?

Hypnosis is a wellness technique that works by promoting positive behavioral or cognitive changes. During successful hypnosis, the client should be eased into a state of deep relaxation in which the conscious mind takes a back seat and the subconscious mind becomes more active. The client is often able to let go of critical thoughts and become receptive to the therapist’s suggestions. In this state of hypnosis, motivating suggestions can bypass your usual mental resistance and internal defense mechanisms. For example, even if you want to quit overeating cupcakes, you may have some level of resistance that your rational mind can’t overcome. During hypnosis, the positive suggestions made by the hypnotherapist can bypass your usual blocks, helping you to achieve the formerly unachievable: stopping overeating, quitting smoking, mastering public speaking, or losing your fear of heights. The goal of hypnosis is to strengthen and empower the client’s motivation, commitment and focus. Consider working with someone who is not just trained in hypnosis but also is a licensed therapist or psychotherapist who can bring their academic background into your session.

What can hypnosis help you with?

According to many sources including the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) which is part of the United States National Library of Medicine and a branch of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), hypnosis is scientifically proven to help relieve both mental challenges and physical pains. Hypnosis can alleviate stress and reduce pain after surgeries, has been shown to relieve anxiety in children in the emergency room, and can be useful for managing pain associated with everything from arthritis to migraines. Hypnosis is non-invasive and gives you a way to control pain or discomfort that might otherwise seem out of your hands. Hypnosis shouldn’t be used as a substitute for medical care, but may be an excellent complementary tool that is best provided by a trained therapist or licensed medical provider. The University of Maryland Medical Center shares many conditions for which hypnosis can be useful:

  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Tension headaches
  • Alopecia areata
  • Asthma
  • Phobias
  • Insomnia
  • Addictions
  • Bedwetting
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Labor and delivery
  • Skin disorders, such as acne, psoriasis and eczema (atopic dermatitis)
  • Stress
  • Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
  • Cancer-related pain
  • Weight loss
  • Eating disorders
  • Warts
  • Indigestion (dyspepsia)
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder
  • Smoking cessation

How is hypnosis used in therapy?

Hypnosis is a powerful tool to help clients overcome challenging issues such as anxiety, phobias, pain management, hot flashes and more. Hypnosis is also a way to help let go of addictions like smoking, overeating and gambling. In and of itself, hypnosis is not a therapy, but it can be used in conjunction with therapy to empower and encourage the person receiving it to make positive change. Some people are more susceptible to hypnosis and will benefit more from hypnotherapy than others.

According to Dr. Clifford N. Lazarus, speaking for Psychology Today, hypnosis is a “genuine psychological phenomenon that has valid uses in clinical practice … hypnosis is a state of highly focused attention or concentration, often associated with relaxation, and heightened suggestibility. While under hypnosis (i.e., in a hypnotic trance), it seems many people are much more open to helpful suggestions than they usually are.” The suggestions made in a therapeutic setting get deep into a person’s brain, beyond their conscious thinking, leading to behavior change and the ability to overcome challenges that might otherwise seem insurmountable.

What is the effectiveness of hypnosis?

The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services recognizes the healing power of hypnosis and its proven effectiveness for anxiety, pain control, smoking cessation, headaches and more. Hypnosis may be safe and complementary way to augment medical attention you are receiving for a chronic illness or pain, or a way to resolve an addiction or phobia that you are otherwise unable to control. Hypnosis does not work on every person. When scientists began studying hypnosis in earnest, a report published by Stanford University titled “The Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale” demonstrated that different brains respond to hypnosis in varying degrees, and a very few do not respond at all. Working with a trained psychologist, you’ll soon determine whether you are a good candidate for the healing benefits of hypnotherapy.

During a hypnotherapy session, the therapist will bring you into a state of deep relaxation in which the critical, conscious part of your brain recedes and the subconscious mind becomes alert and focused. The therapist will make suggestions, based on your intended goals, that will take root in your subconscious mind. These suggestions should affect your thinking in a positive way and empower you to make change.
