So far, we've had Michael Cole, the chef/owner of Artistic Touch, come to our house for a tasting. There were 3 of us at the tasting, and he came in and first asked us what the rules were of the kitchen. That was terrific - we asked for no sauce on the marble countertops since it would etch the surface. He noticed we had white throw rugs on the ground, and said that they'd make sure those were removed and bring their own black mat instead, to avoid scuffing or staining. He had a large cooler and carried it through the house rather than dragging it across our wood floor - a thoughtful and much appreciated attention to detail. He made sure that it didn't leak before coming in the house with it, too. The samples were numerous and required loads of prep work on his part prior to showing up at our house. We had so many options to try for appetizer ideas, from meatball lollipops with two sauce flavors, beef wellington pastries, bruchetta, salmon-cream cheese mousse on small crackers, jambalaya skewers, apple and cheese crackers, and even more things that I can't even remember them all right now! He made up a special lobster red-pepper bisque for my husband to try, based on his special request on the phone call. He made us a salad with raspberry viniagrette and arugula and mango cubes - yum! He made us a salmon plate with fresh, beautiful salmon - nothing frozen. The "Well-Done Only" girl in our group got hers caramelized which made her happy, the rest of us got medium rare which was terrific, and the sauce flavors were lovely - the rice wasn't dull. He made an apple slaw to put on top. His garnishes were all colorful and pretty so the plates were thoughtfully done with lovely, appealing presentation in mind. We also tried a filet mignon with mushroom sauce and whipped up mashed potatoes that were to die for. He knew that oftentimes, one extra person might show up at the table during the tastings, so he had an extra plate's worth of food from the tasting and put it in a to-go container which he had brought with him, so we could keep the leftovers in our fridge for later. He made three different types of desserts - Death by Chocolate was my favorite one, but there was another one with caramel and gingerbread, and another one with vanilla pudding and shaved coconut. All of them had hand-whipped cream on top. None of them were "too sugary sweet," they were just rich and savory and in single-size containers. It's clear that Chef Michael Cole is passionate about what he does and listens to his clients requests. He's going to bring a baked mac and cheese for the pickiest eater in our group, for instance, just to be safe. His price for the overall dinner for ten for us is incredibly reasonable and achievable for ordinary folks. He has Michelle Cole handle the finance and operations side of the business, and he handles everything that happens in the kitchen. We're excited to work with him and expect to hear from Michelle or Michael soon to arrange a deposit for our event.

Unfortunately, I was unable to go with Scratch Catering, due to a conflict with our venue. However, I absolutely LOVED Chef Giovanni and Ali, they were both so friendly and professional. My fiancé and I had a tasting with them, and it was a great experience. The food was incredible, and I loved that Chef didn't hover around us while we ate. He allowed us ample time to discuss the food and enjoy each bite, without the pressure of having to compliment him after each taste. I can't say enough great things about this caterer, and their food. Although our venue required us to choose one of their caterers, we will definitely be using Scratch Catering in the future for other events!

We had a lovely Christmas Party catered by Unique Luxury Catering. Chef Steve helped me pick out the perfect menu for our venue. Carol Ann coordinated everything: chairs, tables, linens, food, ice. Everything was included which made my job easier. Chef Alice prepared items which satisfied us all, including those that were vegetarians. The service was incredible. They were friendly and took care of all of our needs. Great job! Rose

Meat Lovers delight !! We had 2 groups of 14 people each. Started with appetizers of sliced sausage, baby backs and veggies. Second course of Caesar salad. The main course was Rib Eyes and smoked prawns. Finished the meal off with apple cobbler topped with a scoop of ice cream !!! Cook and server came to house, prepared servings, barbecued on site, cleaned up. Very professional. I would highly recommend these guys. Iver - Norwood Waterworks, Edmonton, Alberta

Chef Christine made our Mother's 90th birthday celebration amazing!! She made a special Spanish Tapas menu in keeping with our Spanish theme. We began with a spectacular Summer Artisan Cheese Board; then Spanish Potato Bombas; Shrimp Tapas w/Mango Shooters; Chimichurri Pork and Chicken Skewers; Marinated Flank Steak Crostini and ending with Bananas Foster Vanilla Bean Tempura Ice Cream with Caramel Sauce. Are you hungry yet? Best of all Chef Christine set up; cooked; served and cleaned up. Hiring a personal chef was genius. Christine was prompt, professional and personable. We were extremely impressed and will be using her again in the future. The Kriz Family

We hired Whitney for my brother’s engagement party and we couldn’t have asked for a better bartender. She is personable, energetic and made awesome drinks. I even got a text from her as she was on her way asking if I needed her to pick up ice or anything else for the party. In addition to making drinks, she went above and beyond by refilling coolers, accommodating special requests from guests and keeping everything clean throughout the night. Multiple guests asked for her contact info for future parties. I highly recommend her!

I tried them out since it was something new for our annual event and it was way better than what I expected. The service was great and the poke burritos were awesome!! It was convenient, new, and delicious. Our guests loved it also and it made our event so much more exciting. They came with all the equipments including tables and made the burritos when ordered. I think they said they make their own sauce which gave such a good flavor for the burritos. They gave seaweed salad as appetizers and even brought home made green tea ice cream!! I would definitely arrange another event with them.

Serving Therapy With A Cherry since 1986 & Catering

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

How much should catering cost per person?

Catering prices can range from about $10 per guest on the low end to $150 or more per person on the high end. Catering costs represent the quality of food, presentation, variety, ingredients and service. But catering prices are more than the cost to cook the food that will be at your party; they also include the cost for the company to do business. Here is a simple breakdown of catering prices:

    • Menu: The food you serve your guests will directly affect the price per person. Organic ingredients, complex recipes, elaborate presentations, or high-ticket items like lobster or filet mignon all add to the cost.
    • Service: Buffet, family style, plated dinners — how you serve the food affects the cost per person. For example, a true plated meal can cost about twice the price of a staff-assisted buffet because of staffing costs. Hiring waiters, bartenders and cleanup crew will all be calculated into the per-person catering price.
    • Drinks: Providing beverages and alcoholic drinks for guests greatly increases your catering budget. Hosting an open bar can cost as much per person as the meal.
    • Rentals: Seating, plates, glassware, etc., will all have an effect on the cost per person for catering. For example, a plastic conference table that seats 10 costs about $6 to rent on average, while a wooden farmhouse table is about $80 to rent on average.
    • Business costs: Any catering cost will also include the cost for the company to do business such as insurance, employee wages, commercial kitchen space and more.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
