I have two different companies to inspect my mold problem, josh from asap restoration and the other guy. I got two different results. The other guy told me to do a total mold remediation and josh said the opposite. Josh told me nothing to worry about, it's non toxic mold, just spray with bleach cleaning solution, clean it, re-caulk, and fix the leak. Guess what?! It been about 1 month, smell is gone, mold is gone but I have not re-caulk it yet. I been using my other bathroom instead. Josh from asap is honest as it gets. Yes, I did spend double the cost for inspection but it was worth it. I would spend thousands if I believe the other guy.

We found mold in our bathroom and GroundZero definitely helped us clean that up. They redid the plumbing for our bathrooms that were built in 1959 and Nick stayed behind making sure that all the drywall was even and perfect! Thankful he stayed and did that as if it was his own home! Thank you Nick for that and for answering our questions so kindly!

From start to finish, Global Prevention Services was outstanding. I actually called them when the work was completed to ask if I could write a recommendation. Everyone was so helpful and so easy to work with. The work was done in less time than they thought and the workers were absolutely excellent. Everything about Global was amazing and I would recommend them to anyone who has mold or water damage.

My husband and I recently found mold in one of our bathrooms. My husband removed what he saw but we decided to look into mold remediation companies to check our house completely. We have a 21 month old son, and a 5 year old son who both were constantly sick with runny noses. My 21 month old son had been on antibiotics over 5 times in his little 21 month old life. This bothered us both greatly and we started looking into possible problems in our home. Our pediatrician had actually thought that they both had allergies to dust mites. He prescribed allergy medication to my youngest son daily; however, my husband and I did not want to give him daily medication at such a young age. We called several companies and left messages. Lee Milano with Mold Neutralizers called me back within 10 minutes. He came out to our house that very same day. He took air samples and samples of the places where my husband had removed mold the week prior by himself. Unsurprisingly, my husband had been very ill to his stomach following his removal of the mold he found. When Mr. Maglanoc came to our home he educated us on toxic mold. I don’t believe many people know the very severe risks of life, and illness that mold can bring to a family without this education. Within two days, Mr. Maglanoc got back to me with the unfortunate news that our house was filled with toxic mold. It was in two bathrooms, and basically gotten into the air we were breathing daily. I packed our bags and immediately got my boys out of the house. He and his crew began working on our house almost immediately, putting a couple of his other jobs on hold in my children’s best interest. He was compassionate, hardworking, kept in constant contact with my husband and I, and worked directly with our insurance company (which at the time was actually being extremely difficult to work with). The mold in our home had been making us sick and if he had not done what he did; my young children would have suffered the most in the long run. He not only got rid of the problem mold in our walls, under our bathtub and toilets, but he also completely rid our home of the mold in the air, in our humidifiers, in our AC, and even took it upon himself to make sure our cars were remediated also. He gave us an estimate at the very beginning of the work to be done not really knowing what he was getting himself into I think. I understand that there was much more mold and work to be done than what he probably thought because his estimate was much less than what I believe he and his crew deserved. They worked relentlessly for 6 days on our home. When we returned not only was the mold gone, but he had a sanitary company come in and completely sanitize our home making sure all mold and any chance of the mold returning was gone. His estimate never changed even though he ended up having to do extra work in our home. He actually basically became a friend during the process as I trusted him completely. He was sending me pictures of what they were doing all day long, as I never worried about anything that was going on. With the risk of sounding extremely emotional… My children do not have runny noses and we have been back in for over two weeks. I actually owe Lee Maglanoc and Mold Neutralizers so much more than what they asked for. I believe he saved my children’s life, because had this mold gone unnoticed, the neuro toxins would have eventually done more damage to my children. My husband has had severe mental illness as well and we believe with time, this will get better as well. It brings tears of joy to my eyes, because this man and his company with what they do daily, has changed my life and my children’s and our families life forever. I would recommend him to anyone, anywhere, anytime. Janeen Powers

Called and was worked into the schedule right away for a water leak under our sink. Showed up on time and was ready to work. Found the leak right away. (I had been searching for it and could not find it). Repaired the leak right away. Inspected, gave us some options and started getting it dried out. Came back to the house on time again. Again gave us our options and pricing. Started demo right away and hauled off the trash. Cleaned up, sprayed for mold even tho we did not find any as a precaution. When the new cabinet came in I was surprised to see it fit perfectly. When Austin was done we could not tell he had ever been there. In this day and age it is hard to find someone that will be honest and not try to make as much as they can off this kind of damage. I highly recommend them for any job. This was not a real large job by size. But he was equipped to do a big job if needed. Cannot thank them enough!

Phoenix Flood came to our rescue from a less than scrupulous remediation contractor who wanted to tear out non-contiguous partitions, including kitchen cabinets, backsplash and granite counter, in our condominium to address a relatively small mold problem, e.g. "This is what we have to do if you want to obtain a clean air certificate from our hygienist." Phoenix Flood and its subcontractors remediated the mold problem, reconstructed the affected area and encouraged the certified hygienist to give us an expedited inspection and testing so that the requisite certification was obtained in just over a week without close to the destruction, reconstruction and attendant expense which the original scaremonger contractor intended to visit upon us. They were prompt to answer our initial call, met all scheduled work on the dates they indicated and were just excellent in all regards.

Great service absolutely would highly recommend Vizcom contracting. I will contact his business once again for any other problems at home. Omar and his technicians were very polite and professional. They were able to fix the water flood and mold remediation inside my home. One thing that I appreciate from his company is that his technicians took extra precaution to not damage my home or cross-contaminate the clean areas while doing the mold remediation. Best thing was the affordable pricing.

We had a remediation project growing in our walls for many years but only learned of it when we moved aside some furniture to prepare for new carpet. As soon as I saw the stains on the drwall, I knew we had a problem. Chris Garcia and Everclear Environmental Services responded immediately, making our situation a priority - even with the holidays quickly approaching. They had the walls cleaned out within a week, and also cleaned out our HVAC vents. Within two weeks everything was put back together and the new carpet went in. We are happy with the results. I highly recommend Everclear if you need remediation.

I love the fact that there was no demolition required. Amazing product and service. And best yet, less than half the cost of traditional remediation and you also get your whole home freed of mold. And all done in just a few hours, not days. So much less invasive. Awesome work gents!

*DEFINATELY*DEFINATELY*WITHOUT DOUBT-I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS COMPANY !!! My daughter recently bought a home that unfortunately had a severe mold problem. She had several companies send her quotes along w/a few companies come out to her home & give her these OUTRAGES quotes. Needless to say she finally asked for my help, after many more OUTRAGEOUS quotes I myself started to feel discouraged w/how soon we'd be able to get the job done. Long story-short I went W/Az Extreme as they were the more affordable company & we all know a severe mold issue is not cheap. I must say i felt as though i paid the best company in the world to handle this mold issue. We got amazing customer service, Damon was very thorough w/his inspection. The camera, tools & gadgets he used for mold inspection & for air quality test were foreign to me prior to this day. He walked us through every little thing he did & explained repeatedly w/patience as my daughter wasn't fully comprehending. Damon did an outstanding job w/this mold issue that my daughter now sits in her home w/her family so content & happy it's as though there was never a problem. Thanks to Az Extreme- Damon for your great prices, outstanding service, exceptional communication & guarantee that I'm sure we won't need. But mostly for my daughter's smile when she walks thru her front door. You're AWESOME !!!

Brian from Imperative Cleaning Solutions exceeded all of my expectations. He was professional and thorough in explaining the scope, duration, and budget for the project. I initially hired Brian to complete a master bathroom remodel that included mold removal in my home. Brian performed the mold removal, demo work, and complete remodel of my bathroom within my budget and time frame. I was so pleased with his work that I hired him for additional projects around my home which included carpentry work (kitchen cabinets), custom stain work on staircase railings, and painting. I highly recommend him for anything you need done in your home. Not only does he produce high quality work but he also takes pride in what he does. I will definitely hire him again for future projects in my home.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a mold remediation?

Mold remediation is the process of identifying and removing unhealthy levels of mold that have colonized in a home, office, school or other building. Over time, if untreated, mold can destroy a home by breaking down cellulose-based materials (like wood or ceiling tiles) and causing a slow and messy decay. In the shorter term, a mold infestation can cause severe health problems. According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), mold can trigger respiratory problems, nasal and sinus congestion, eye irritation, nose or throat irritation, skin irritations, problems with your nervous system, and aches and pains. Mold inspection and mold remediation are often requested in tandem, although they are two separate services. Nationally, mold inspection costs range from $250 to $300. If mold has been positively identified in your house, either by visual examination or through mold testing, remediation can safely remove it. Properly trained and equipped professionals use specialized equipment (like vacuums and air scrubbers with HEPA filters) to keep mold spores contained while they remove contaminated materials and treat infested areas with antimicrobial spray. A key component to a successful mold remediation after eliminating the mold is ensuring that the water source that caused the mold infestation is also resolved.

How does mold remediation work?

Mold remediation can eliminate mold colonies from your home or business. Mold is a normal part of daily life, but in wet or humid settings mold can quickly colonize and spread by making spores. Whether visible or hidden, untreated mold can cause real health problems and cause extensive (and expensive) damage to your property. Mold remediation involves killing the mold, removing the dead mold and preventing future mold growth. Here is an example of the steps involved in professional mold remediation:

  • Contain work area and apply negative air pressure HEPA air purifiers to prevent cross-contamination. If spores spread, the colonies can easily regrow elsewhere in your home.
  • Mist an EPA-registered antimicrobial to suspend and kill mold spores.
  • Remove affected building surfaces.
  • Bag and dispose of contaminated materials properly.
  • Treat cavities/underlayment and dehumidify.
  • Abrasively remove dead loose mold.
  • Apply EPA-registered protective sealer.
  • Perform clearance testing.

Remove containment materials.

How is a mold test done?

Mold testing can help identify a mold infestation in your home or business. Mold inspection costs can vary based on the type of test you want done and the number of samples you request. The national average mold inspection cost is $250-$300. The EPA explains that if you have a visible mold problem, in most cases sampling and testing is unnecessary. However, if you have unexplained and potential mold-related illness or can smell mold in your house, mold inspection costs may be a good investment. To avoid unscrupulous testers, the EPA recommends working with a testing agency that adheres to the analytical methods laid out by professional organizations such as the American Industrial Hygiene Association or the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists. Mold inspection costs can vary based on the type of testing done. Prices can also vary, depending on the size of the home, the number of surface areas to be tested, and the extent of the mold infestation. Here are some examples of mold inspection average costs:

  • Swab testing: $200-$300
    • A professional collects a surface swab from a potentially infested area for testing in a lab. Some professionals have concerns about this being the sole test done because it only gathers a small amount of data from a certain area of the house. That’s why it’s frequently done in conjunction with air cell testing.
  • Air cell testing: $250-$350
    • A professional collects an air sample in the home to measure the amount of mold spores in the air. This test is frequently done in conjunction with swab testing to ensure more complete data. Costs are higher for this test because the equipment required of the contractor is more expensive.
  • Both air cell and swab tests provided by the same company: $400-$600.

How do you get rid of mold?

Mold is a naturally occurring and important part of our ecosystem. That said, excessive mold can actually be hazardous to your health. Mold remediation is usually the best strategy to get rid of unhealthy levels of mold in your home or office. If you’re not comfortable working with mold or the area is larger than 10 square feet (3 feet by 3 feet), it is highly recommended to hire a mold remediation professional to resolve the problem. However, if you’re DIY-savvy, don’t have any health risks, and are not freaked out by mold, the EPA gives homeowners the greenlight to clean mold areas that are less than 10 square feet. Here are some EPA-recommended DIY cleaning tips:

  • Fix plumbing leaks and other water problems as soon as possible. Dry all items completely.
  • Scrub mold off hard surfaces with detergent and water, and dry completely.
  • Throw away absorbent or porous materials (like ceiling tiles and carpet) if they become moldy.
  • Avoid exposing yourself or others to mold.
  • Do not paint or caulk moldy surfaces. Clean up the mold and dry the surfaces before painting. Paint applied over moldy surfaces is likely to peel.
  • If you are unsure about how to clean an item (art, fine furniture, etc.) consult a reputable specialist affiliated with a professional organization in their field.

Is mold damage covered by insurance?

Mold damage may or may not be covered by your homeowner's insurance. Mold damage is caused by standing water and excess moisture. Mold damage can be covered by insurance when an item already covered under your homeowners insurance breaks accidentally — for example, if your plumbing suddenly ruptures and water floods your house, the homeowners insurance will cover part or all of the costs for the plumbing repair and any mold remediation costs necessary as a direct result of the water damage.

But you may not be able to get insurance to pay for your mold remediation costs if the damage is a result of your neglect — for example, if you’ve had a slow leak under your bathroom sink for years and have ignored the issue. If the insurer can determine that the mold damage is a result of your negligence, they likely won’t cover mold remediation costs. Also, most homeowners insurance will usually not cover mold remediation costs after a flood unless you have a special insurance rider covering your home in case of a flood. To help prevent mold damage, always keep humidity levels in your house between 30 percent and 60 percent, clean up water spills and damp areas right away, and ensure you have exhaust fans in your kitchen and bathroom.
