After calling multiple caterers Jon was the only one to answer his phone. His follow up fantastic. The food was amazing. Michael was as concerned as I was that my event was a success. It is wonderful to find a vendor that still believes in quality customer service

I actually attended opening day. I purchase two Pound cake Banana Pudding in a jar desert. It was simply amazing. I am very proud of this African American entrepreneur and the establishment of her new restaurant. Please stop by and have a bite to eat. It will be so worth it.

After emailing and leaving unreturned voicemails for two caterers that I won't mention, I found Artistic Touch Catering. Immediately, I knew that I was in great hands because of our interaction. Chef Michael dove right in and was present every step of the way! Being a foodie, the food is a major part of my day and I didn't want the typical Hors d'oeuvre. Chef Michael called me and I explained my vision to him and he just got it. When I mentioned that I wanted out guests to have a foodgasm when they tasted it. After emailing and finalizing a menu, my fiance and I scheduled a tasting, which was no additional charge. When we arrived, Chef Michael greeted us personally. Although it was our first time meeting, you would have never guessed it! He has such a sparkling personality and has a level of professionalism that I haven't seen in a long time. From that very first moment, I knew that I could let go and trust that Chef Michael saw vision and after that first bite, I realized that not only did he meet it, he exceed it! His food is PHENOMENAL, the service EXQUISITE! The table setting was beautiful, which he had set up in the kitchen. Many caterers will sit you outside of their kitchen area and you're unable to actually see the food prepared and plated. They did everything in front of us and seeing him work with his staff and the level of respect that have for each other is admirable! Chef Michael has the experience and the passion and it's evident in everything that he does! Chef Michael, Nicole and the rest of the staff at Artistic has not only set the bar high, but also given me peace of mind! Thank you, Chef Michael, Nicole and the rest of your amazing staff! I can't wait to see you on my BIG DAY!

We had an absolutely delicious dinner with Chef Steve from Unique Luxury Catering. Steve and his assistant Carol Ann did a great job communicating and staying in touch during our planning of my dinner party. He arrived on time, prepared a fabulous meal and cleaned up the kitchen entirely when he was finished and before he left. I would highly recommend Unique Luxury Catering. The food was excellent!

Working with Stacey was wonderful. She listened and worked with me to get the catering experience and services I was needing. Stacey provided a flexible menu which could be tailor made to fit the event. The food presentation, added touches, wide variety of menu choices. and her welcoming personality made a Celebration of Life a success and far less stressful to plan. Everyone loved Stacey's cuisine! Kelly, Faye, and I would not hesitate to recommend Stacey to anyone or to hire her again in the future. We were impressed!!!!

Chef Vic did a fantastic job catering our Thanksgiving dinner for 30. He delivered a hot & fresh meal to our counter at 2:00 on Thanksgiving Day--not many caterers are willing to work on the holiday but Vic & his staff made sure we were taken care of & the meal was better than anything I could have accomplished in my home with days of preparation. It was definitely homemade and the price he gave us was more than worth it! The chain stores & grocery stores we looked into were slightly cheaper but a lesser quality by far & required all the heating up & transferring to dishes that makes Thanksgiving so much work to begin with. Can't say enough about how happy we were & our guests were all impressed as well!

Anna was fantastic! My Brother hired her to cook food for me after I had surgery and she catered to my every taste pallet... her Tomato Soup had an elegant creamy texture and was spiced to a comfy perfection, a nicely roasted chicken accompanied the soup along with a delicious crunchy side of asparagus (which I couldn't get enough of). She even thru in some Christmas cookies to boot. Two days later, I found Enchiladas in the frig and they were absolutely to die for with a delicious red sauce. Later, she brought over Shrimp Scampi, steamed Articokes, Sloppy Joes and even went above and beyond the call of duty to get me some fresh fruit and cottage cheese. Not only is she a fantastic cook, but she took the time out to find out about me and my family and personalized the experience to make me feel cared for after a serious surgery over a holiday with no family around to help. I highly recommend her services to anyone and I am super grateful to my Brother for finding and choosing her on Thumbtack!!! Absolutely wonderful experience!

This was an awesome experience. We hired Giancarlo for our annual team dinner, which we normally go to local restaurants. This time Giancarlo and team came here and made a three course meal! It was fresh, delicious, and high quality. They were easy to work with and the entire team thought it was our best event since we started doing them 8 years ago!

Choosing AZ Inspirations to cater our state women’s retreat was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made! Nik was wonderful to work with. He was very helpful with menu selection and suggestions for how to tailor to the needs of my particular group. The prices are extremely reasonable and there were no hidden surprises. The agreement was clearly written and all was delivered as promised. The buffet set up was beautiful and the food was amazing. (Make sure to check out the lemon bundt cake). We chose the all inclusive taco bar for our dinner and the Cranberry Chicken Salad for lunch -- set up in a build-your-own salad bar presentation. Our guests raved about the food and went back for seconds (yes, there was more than plenty to eat). I would highly recommend AZ Inspirations and plan to use them for every future event. Thanks Nik and team!!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
