We couldn't have been more pleased with Jon and his team. He went above and beyond to get our air conditioning up and running in our height temps exceeding 115. He even took a call from me at 7:00 pm to hear our story and as to what we had been experiencing with our air conditioner, and our recent event with another repair shop. J and J come out the very next morning and took the time, to explain all that was happening. He took photos to show us what the unit looked like and where the problem was. They explained and diagonsed the problem in less than 45 minutes. In fact, I learned more in that 45 minutes, than I learned in 3 hours from the day before with another repair shop. Excellent people! We will use them for any future repairs or maintenance needed. Thank you Jon!

We could not be happier! We get so frustrated with people coming to our house to try and sell new air conditioners vs fixing the problem and Dan was absolutely fantastic. He was 10 MINUTES EARLY. Gave us a low quote with warranty and was super fast. We are now jokingly complaining its too cold. :) Thanks Dan. We will be calling again and will send referrals/friends your way.

Mr. Chris Rees is one kind, honest and knowledgeable man. He arrived on time to check out an evap cooler and air conditioner. Instead of just verbal descriptions, he took pictures to show us and explained everything so that we (two elderly sisters) exactly understood what needed to be done and why. We're grateful for his patient expertise.

Checked operation of AC unit. AC unit operating normal, by not cooling (iced over on prior days). Checked Freon level and found to be low. Added Freon to system and it appears to have solved the problem of not cooling. Will keep a close watch on units future performance. Ken did a good job in refilling the Air Conditioner's Freon and inspecting the whole unit.

We were very pleased with the work we had Pacific Stone Flooring complete. We had Ivan and his crew raise our ceiling from an 8ft ceiling to a vaulted ceiling and it turned out great. They also did the drywall and texturing of the entire ceiling of the house. They wired and did the recessed lighting in the house, moved some of the air ducts as well. In addition to that we had him do the flooring in the house too!! The floor turned out great too! I would recommend Pacific Stone to anyone that needs some work done on their house.

Mike did an excellent job with the HVAC piece of my remodel. This included relocating the main air intake and splitting a single duct into 2 on a very high ceiling.

I like the thoroughness of their efforts as well as the approach in which they take when it comes to finding the reason your air quality is not not operating at best potential. Speaking from experience, in the past I have delt with air-personnel in my home who were in a hurry to get in and out. I get it, AZ is hot! However, my bill continues to rise with the escape of air I pay for! I work hard for my money and do not like paying for a bill that continues to rise because of a leak in the flow. With your company, I feel my concerns were heard, hence delt with in a manner that would identify the actual problem verses feeding me information that has nothing to do with the problem at hand when it comes to my A.C. Barak was the auditor who serviced my home on 08/09/18 and I am very happy with his deliverance with ON POINT CUSTOMER SERRVICE!!! I heard about your company via Midday viewer special and I am thankful for tuning in when I did. I am thankful for your auditor and his service in my home. Thank you so much for assisting in making the air quality in my home better. I appreciate you! NicoleRodriguez

I needed some help with my air conditioning, I spoke with a different company and called Cutting Edge. They came out at the time requested, found the source of my problem and fixed it. These guys were timely, they worked within my budget, and got cold air very fast, I would highly recommend this company, they were polite and honest, stayed long enough to ensure the AC worked and left. Overall, these guys know what they are doing, and not out to rip off the people who call them, and will call them again if I have future problems

My air conditioner was running constantly and not keeping the house very cool. Ken came over the next morning and cleaned it and added refrigerant. He was very efficient, friendly and professional. That night I had to turn my air up as my house was too cold!! I'm very happy with the service and will continue to use Baker Heating and Cooling.

I got a home energy audit from Mountain Peak Air before the summer hit and I'm SO glad I did! They found a huge hole in my old rotted hard duct work. I ended up replacing all my duct work with nice insulated flex duct work and the air flow is 1000x better. Also added insulation in my attic since I barely had anything and re-did the weather stripping on my exterior doors. My electric bills have been way lower (because I'm not cooling my attic!!) and we are much more comfortable. They were professional, got the work done quickly, and it was super reasonable especially since I got $700 back from SRP rebates. Highly recommend this company.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

How much does it cost for a new air conditioning unit?

If you’re ready for a new air conditioning unit, it’s time to start exploring HVAC prices. The price will vary depending on the type of air conditioner you buy and its cooling capacity. Window units, which require minimal installation, are one of the most affordable options on the market. If you’re purchasing from a big-box store, you can expect to pay approximately $120-$1,000 for a window unit. Window units are appealing for their quick setup and relatively low cost, but they can use more energy over time than central air and only cool the room in which they’re installed. Portable air conditioners don’t have the cooling power of a window unit, but they do have the perk of being transportable from room to room. Expect to pay between $225 and $800 for a portable air conditioner, on average. For a whole-house air conditioning system with coils, condenser and line (not including installation or ductwork), the cost from a big-box store can range from approximately $2,000 to $4,000 or more. If you don’t have (and don’t want to put in) ducts, a ductless mini-split air conditioner is a good option, although pricey up front. Pricing can range from $650 to $4,250 per unit on average; you’ll need one unit for each room in which you want temperature control.
