Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does landscaping cost?

The price of landscaping varies widely due to the range of choices that can be made, but you can expect to pay anywhere from $320 and $20,000 for your landscaping work. The national average cost for a landscaping project is $2,600.

Factors like the choice of plants, the amount and type of hardscaping, the square footage of your landscaped area, and the region you live in will have a significant effect on your landscaping cost.

Is hiring a landscaper worth it?

A landscaper is worth it if you don't want to invest a significant amount of time and effort into planting, trimming, raking, weeding and performing other operations on your garden or yard. Hiring a landscaper to perform regular maintenance in your yards and complete bigger projects is valuable if you’re looking to sell your house. A professional landscaper can make your house more appealing to potential buyers.

Some landscapers may perform maintenance duties — remove leaves, mow lawns, trim trees and shrubs, etc. —  but they can also help you bring bigger projects to life. This may include adding a misting system, an outdoor fireplace, water features, artificial turf, a patio and much more.

Start contacting landscapers near you to get free estimates and start planning your project today.

Where can you buy landscaping rocks?

You can shop for landscaping rocks from a variety of different sources. The first option is large chain retail stores specializing in home improvement and gardening. Often, landscaping rocks like slate and other slabs arrive on pallets and are sold in bulk, giving you a great deal. Your local landscaping store also carries rocks, and you may even have a stone or quarry seller nearby who can sell you the rocks you need. When in doubt, contact landscaping companies near you to see if they have rocks you can purchase.

What is landscaping?

Landscaping is the intentional placement and maintenance of living plants on an area of land or in your yard. This can include trees, lawn, flowers, bushes and other plant life and often incorporates mulch and other organic matter. The primary purpose of landscaping is to provide beauty to the house or building it surrounds.

Many landscaping companies also offer design, architecture and construction services. For example, they can help you design a yard that incorporates a patio, deck, pool, fire pit, lighting, walkways, retaining walls and more.

What is landscape design?

Landscaping design refers to the art of analyzing an existing landscape, planning how to transform it through flora and fauna design and working with a client to ensure goals are met. Landscape designers may completely transform an outdoor space or make minor modifications to enhance it. They may also call for grading and the construction of hardscaping surfaces like walkways or patios to add to the enjoyment of the space.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

I hired Four Seasons to clean up a rental property that the landscaping had gone awry. They were prompt and cleaned up the property in half the time I imagined it would take. It looks like a whole different house. I have set up monthly maintenance and could not be more please with their service!

Roberto and his crew did a very professional and excellent job removing a large mesquite tree from my front yard, including digging up the stump. They cleaned up and hauled away all traces of the tree and left my yard in very good condition. I would highly recommend Reberto for all landscaping needs.

Great work!! I had a very sore eye of a backyard full of weeds and dead plants. I asked for a clean plain dirt layout and that’s what I got. I got quoted an estimate on-site and they were ready to work that same day! You will not be disappointed. I will DEFINITELY recommend JV Landscaping to others!!

The agreement with Vega's landscaping was for them to remove the weeds from my yard, spray the yard to prevent weeds coming back and then lay down landscaping fabric to also keep weeds from growing through. When the job was done the yard looked good and the rock was spread well, but just a month or so later there are weeds growing back all over the yard. I reached out to them several times to have them remove the weeds over the course of several months. I received a phone call once saying they would be out to take care of it, never showed and will not respond to texts. The communication with this company was terrible from the start and I should have went with my instinct to not use this company. Don't not use this company if you want the job done right and proper follow through.

Chris and his team were awesome to work with. I needed landscape fabric, 13 tons of decorative rock, a few boulders, a border and some land contouring. They quoted me a fair price for the work, scheduled the start of work and completed everything within a couple of days. Chris and team were professional and they made sure that we were happy with the work done. My front yard looks great!

Outstanding, professional service from a man who gets it. We had a sandlot with nothing for landscaping and now we feel like we live at a resort. G Michael's crew was on time, finished ahead of schedule, cleaned up everything when they were done and did everything we discussed and more. He kept us in the loop every step of the way and the final price was exactly as discussed. (Incredibily reasonable as well). I would not only recommend G Michael but will use him myself for any project I need done in the future. Top notch all the way

We hired Sergio for help with a project to level our lawn in the backyard, overseed for perennial rye, and remove a dead queen palm from this wild Summer heat we had. He came out on short notice to provide a free estimate, and then we continued exchanging messages to game plan what to do. Sergio and his colleague came out as promised and completed all projects in about a half day and from what I can tell so far looks like they did an amazing job, at a fair price and quick turnaround time. I’ll be sure to recommend him to more friends and family members looking for honest work at good prices. Thanks again Sergio @ Laurean Landscaping!

Shawn and his guys were amazing! He promptly returned all my inquiries. When initially setting up a time, we spoke on a Thurs and set up a time for the following Mon. Shawn said he'd call on Sun to give a time window. He was true to his word and called Sunday afternoon, but said he was available the same day! He and two guys came out during the time promised and were very thorough in their work. Our yard was a disaster and they made it immaculate. They had lots of rocks to contend with, a pool, as well as our neighbor's large ficus tree, but they worked efficiently. I would highly recommend his services to anyone and will definitely use him again for our future landscaping needs.

Jorge did an amazing job with my weed-infested, overgrown yard!! Not only did he do everything I asked, but even went the extra step and did things I didn't even think about (cleaning up a patch a crab grass in my front yard, ripping out weeds in the side yard, cleaning up my own trimming mess from months before). I would HIGHLY recommend him to anyone looking for someone whose not only going to get the job done, but really take the time to make sure it's done well. He was prompt, responsive, and affordable. We will definitely be using J&J 360 Landscaping again! Absolutely overwhelmed with my yard transformation!

The project for Chris and his crew was to prep front yard, lay brick border and spread rock. I meet with three different landscaping companies and Numbero Uno Tree and Palms had the best price by far. What impressed me the most was the time Chris spent with me during the initial quote. Chris spent a good 45 minutes talking through the project. He was on time for the appointment, actually early which never happens. In addition, during the appointment Chris recommended an outstanding palm tree person. I got the name from Chris and Lucio was everything Chris spoke about. He did an outstanding job on my trees and now I have Lucio for life to do my palm trees. I do want to say that Chris and his brother have done an outstanding job. I got to be part of the process which I really appreciated. Both Chris and his brother were very polite, I could ask questions throughout the process. What I really like the best was that they did not rush through the project. Numero Uno Tree and Palms will be the company I use from here on out for all project at my house. They are definitely Numero Uno in my book. Thanks Chris and Adrian for a job well done.

Logan had decided to be Mr Fix It and fill in the old pool in the backyard... well 2 years later, the backyard was still a dirt hole with all sizes of concrete and rocks mixed in. I hired Eddie and his team to make the mess a masterpiece. Seconds after I signed up for Thumbtack, Eddie contacted me. I'm from New York; I like people who work fast. He came out personally the next morning to give us an estimate on a myriad of jobs to get the backyard how we(mainly how I) wanted it. From filling and grading the yard, to installing irrigation for the sprinkler system, deciding on turf or sod, and putting pavers in. Eddie had a lot of knowledge and worked with our ideas as if they were his own. I wish I could attach pictures to show the before and after. We decided on a curved patio using travertine pavers. We went with sod instead of turf. Eddie and his team (who are all very professional and nice and respectful of the property) even suggested little additions that Logan and I had not thought of, but that definitely helped to really make the project complete. The backyard was completed after a few days well within our budget and we love it! Eddies team came back a few days later to patch up some of the travertine that settled in and since then, Eddie has come by to check on the sod and instruct us to either water more or less and when to mow. Also to adjust a sprinkler head for us. We appreciate his work and honesty and passion for what he does. Overall HomeScape LLC has 10 stars from us. As soon as I think of more landscape improvements, we will definitely be calling Eddie.
