Michele has been giving my little sister piano lessons for the past two months and it has been such a great experience. My little sister has Down Syndrome and she was completely new to music at the beginning. Michele has been so patient with my little sister and has really established a great connection with her that my little sister looks forward to going back to lessons. Not only that, but her piano playing has exceeded beyond my expectation. I am so happy to have Michele as her piano teacher. If you are looking to learn how to play the piano, Michele is a really wonderful and talented person that will be able to help you or your children with your musical endeavors!

I took two years of Mary Wagner's group piano class at Saguaro High School. I am a percussionist and planned on going into Music Education at the time, and thought it would be worth my time to also learn piano. Mary is definitely the best piano teacher in the area. I played so much piano literature, and progressed extremely well under her instruction. She not only made sure I could play songs, but she made sure I had the knowledge and understanding of what I was reading. She did more than just improve my piano skills; she improved my musicianship. I'm now at ASU's School of Music studying Music Education, and even tested out of first semester piano; and my music theory class isn't a big challenge. Also, my sight-reading skills on mallet percussion are quite good. All of that is a direct result of studying under Mary. I've seen her work with all different levels of students, and all of her students achieve success in some way. Studying under Mary will make you a great pianist and musician. I truly believe that if you want to learn piano and are in the area, definitely go to Mary for lessons!

I am delighted to recommend Maryanne Kremer-Ames as a guitar teacher. She is simply wonderful. I feel that studying with her has made me not just a better guitarist but also a better musician, as my ear for music has steadily developed in a way that allows me to appreciate all kinds of music more deeply. After going through four guitar teachers in seven years, I finally found Maryanne and have never looked back. I can truly say that since studying with Maryanne, I have learned how to • Improve the quality of sound I get from my guitar • Get the most out of my practice time • Phrase the music I am learning so I am truly making music instead of just hitting the right notes • Conquer difficult passages by breaking them down into smaller chunks so I can more readily identify the underlying problem that is holding me back • Lock in the correct fundamentals of posture, hand position, fingernail shape, and so on that will improve my sound and increase my joy in playing • Prepare for playing in front of an audience As a teacher Maryanne is patient and easy to work with. She creates a pressure-free learning environment in which everything is adapted to my individual goals and needs. Thanks to her positive approach, I really enjoy the lessons – they actually offer relief from my daily stress! I can’t say enough good things about her as an instructor. She’s definitely the best guitar teacher I have ever had.

I have been bringing my daughter to the piano lessons of Jeff Ouper for the last six months. I’ve seen my daughter able to follow his instructions and accomplish the lessons, but most important is the fact of seeing Jeff focused in passing the information to her each lesson. She can be talkative and distracted at her early age, but he has managed to get her attention well. Jeff has shown me his commitment and engagement to his teachings, his patience with my daughter and someone who is not rushing every lesson. He has been always flexible to my schedule, very professional and his prices are very good compared to other options.

Michele is an excellent piano teacher. I chose her because from the start it was clear that she is passionate about music and the piano and sharing that joy. I am in my early thirties with little acquaintance with the piano prior to starting with Michele. Despite the difficulties of starting at a relatively old age, she has been very patient with me yet structured in her lessons, always with a clear path forward for me to progress in my skills. She is very easy to work with and I hope to continue to grow with her help for a long time to come. I recommend her to anyone who has always wanted to learn the piano and is looking for a professional and engaging teacher.

I would highly recommend Michael. I"m 55 and recently decided to give singing a try. I had a noticeable hole between my low and higher speaking voice. Michael immediately pick up on it explained the cause to me; allergies causing my vocal cords to not vibrate properly. After just a few lessons I noticed that my singing was much better, had a better range and a much smaller hole in my range. Sadly, the allergies are forcing me to postpone my attempt at replacing Rob Halford, but if the Doctors can solve my issue I will immediately return to lessons with Michael. If you're thinking about taking lessons, give Michael a call. You will not be disappointed.

Alex has really made an impression on my 7 yo son and he has only had two lessons. He practices guitar nearly every day and is showing me how to play without getting my thumb lasered off. (This is apparently what happens if one’s thumb is visible above the neck). Alex is very good with my son even though his attention span is short. He is showing him the correct way to hold and play the guitar and my son is really enjoying the lessons. So far, Alex has been very conscientious and reliable. I would certainly recommend him as a guitar instructor.

I take piano lessons from Chris and I highly recommend him. Chris is an extremely talented pianist and a great teacher. He is very flexible in finding material that the student will enjoy playing while still suiting the music to the students skill level and is able to isolate techniques. One thing I particularly enjoy about my lessons is that Chris does a great job of doing more than just helping me learning to play a song. He helps apply techniques of good piano playing to the pieces I am working on and explains how those techniques will affect the sound of the piece so it can be more emotional and entertaining. Now that I have been doing lessons with Chris for a while, we have started to adjust the structure of the lesson to add activities in our lessons that are geared toward my interests like music theory work or help strengthen some of my weaknesses like sight reading. Above all, Chris is an extremely kind person who genuinely cares about his students, their progress, and that they are enjoying both their lessons and learning the instrument as a whole.

I have known Masood personally and professionally for over 35 years. He is an extremely patient and hardworking individual. I have had the opportunity to work with him and have referred students to him on numerous occasions while my niece has been taking piano lessons from him for the past year or so and has made excellent progress. I would definitely recommend Masood for anyone’s music endeavor.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is CPR training?

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (better known as CPR) is a lifesaving manual technique that pumps oxygenated blood back into the body’s organs if someone’s heart or breathing has stopped. A variety of CPR training is available to community members, employees and healthcare providers. CPR training may last two to five hours or more, depending on the content and the target audience. During the training, students will learn how to recognize and respond to an emergency situation. There are different CPR techniques for adults and children, but with both you will learn how to determine whether the person is conscious before administering chest compression. During the training you’ll learn chest compression techniques for adults and different techniques for children between the ages of 1 and 8. Students learn how to properly administer chest compressions, when the technique is appropriate and when it is not, and how long you must perform rescue measures. Students also learn what an automatic external defibrillator (AED) is and how to use it if necessary to shock a patient before administering CPR chest compressions.

How do I become CPR and first aid certified?

You can earn CPR training and receive first aid certification in a number of ways. Choose an online course to learn the materials remotely and then find a testing location to complete the certification process with an in-person demonstration of your knowledge and skills. Encourage your workplace to host a first aid and CPR training so employees can learn what to do in case of a workplace emergency and how to respond with lifesaving techniques. You may also be able to take a CPR or first aid class in your community. A basic CPR training may run four to five hours. After receiving CPR training, you’ll know how to respond if an adult or a child goes into cardiac arrest or stops breathing. You’ll learn how to use chest compressions to keep blood pumping to a person’s organs, which can keep them alive until an emergency responder can arrive. First aid and CPR training can also include education about how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED).

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

What is first aid training?

With first aid training, you may be able to help save a life. First aid training can teach people who are not medical professionals how to help a sick or injured person in crisis before an ambulance arrives on the scene. Most commonly, first aid training helps teach you how to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and use automated external defibrillators (AEDs).

First aid training can teach you how to respond in a variety of emergency situations, including:

  • Asthma attack
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Burns
  • Choking
  • Diabetic emergencies
  • External bleeding
  • Heart attack
  • Poisoning
  • Neck, head or back injury
  • Stroke
  • Seizure

First aid training classes may be offered by professionals who are affiliated with the Red Cross, which offers online, in-person, and blended training classes. First aid classes are also often offered through local recreation centers, city services, schools, hospitals and private companies.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.
