They did a fantastic job. Both my front and backyard had to be MAJORILY weeded and the trees/ bushes needed to be cut. John was on time, easy to contact when I called to confirm, and gave me a fair deal. I would HIGHLY recommend him and his team.

It was great to find a company that not only arrived on time for the estimate, but, also to do great work. My backyard was very overgrown after all the rain, and tall Orleanders with dead branches needed trimming. The estimate was not only fair, but, to my surprise, more work was done than I expected, such as trimming back a much needed job on a large cactus, and pod droppings in the front yard.. A very nice change after being taken advantage of from others in the past due, to being an older woman. I definately will be contacting him again in the future, as my yard and the clean up afterwards have never been done better. I highly recommend this service.

I hired Transformers do put a fire pit and seating in my backyard. I already had high expectations looking at their previous work but the finished product exceeded what I had in mind. The staff was courteous and professional and dealing with them was a pleasure. If I decide to do more work around the house, I will not hesitate to give them a call.

Larry helped remove two trees in the backyard. They were over 30 ft tall and in a tough spot between the wall and the hot tub. Larry did a great job, cleaned up properly, and was on time.

Oscar Silva did what he said he would do with excellent quality and responsiveness. He had very competitive prices, but never tried to cut quality. The work was excellent, and he kept me in the loop the entire time with pictures and texts when I was unable to be on site. I contracted him to take out the asphalt in my drive area and replaced it with concrete. I also asked him to build a carport wall, and put in a new patio with overhang in the backyard. All was completed exceeding my expectations. I will definitely use Oscar as my contractor in the future. He certainly knows what he's doing and how to get it done.

Forrest was super thorough and realistic with us the whole time. He is a friendly guy who wrote up a detailed quote quickly. Then, he got to work within a couple weeks. We wanted a simple low care (meaning no care) backyard and he did just that. The pavers are perfectly lined up and it really is great!

We hired Adolfo to cut our eucalyptus tree that grew too big and was swinging too much during the monsoon storms. He cut it down in one day, and left out backyard clean! We will be keeping him referenced for our next projects.

I needed my backyard leveled out so that rain runoff would not move towards the house/foundation. Part of my rear patio had dropped about an inch and it was cracked. It was discovered that my rear patio was about 2 inches too low. My yard was leveled and the excess soil removed. Then my patio was removed and a new one set in. Overall the job was done with little problems and with professional skill. I will hire Az Custom Landscaping again for some future work.

We chose Jesus due to his timeliness, professionalism and ability to fit what we wanted into our budget. We had a backyard in our new house of just dirt and weeds. It was so boring. Jesus transformed our backyard with turf, pavers, and rockscape. Super low maintenance but simply beautiful. We enjoy sitting outside all the time while the dogs lay in the sun. We can't wait to start planning some more yard project with Jesus.

We had pavers and grass installed in the back yard. From the initial estimate we felt that A.W. Turf was the right fit for our backyard transformation. The installers did an outstanding job on the entire project, Pavers & Grass.

Matthew did a great job on my backyard. He is very fair on the price although he did ask me for half up front. hey. The work done in a timely fashion and as we were completing the project if I had new ideas he took the time to listen and incorporate them. He did an excellent job with cleanup and offered me a 100% satisfaction guaranteed which he definitely achieved. My next big project or a small maintenance I'll definitely consider going him again.

I called Stone Steps and talked to Garrett, he gave a fair estimate and didn't charge extra even when I changed the design. He was fast, knowledgeable, on time and did a great clean up when done. He got my brick driveway done in 3 days, as well as some low border walls I added in my backyard also. The driveway is flawless, smooth as glass, all my neighbors keep asking me who I had to do it. I have recommended Stone Steps several times, and since then he actually did the my neighbors driveway as well. Easy company to deal with, no headaches, quick, clean, and professional.

Mario and his team did a wonderful job on my backyard and exceeded my expectations! They installed high quality turf with a paved border and lied down some gravel at a reasonable price and did it all in two days. They were also very punctual and professional any time I communicated with them. Highly recommend Mario and his staff for any work needed!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

How much does it cost to have your lawn mowed?

Regular lawn maintenance can do wonders for your home’s curb appeal. Professional lawn care prices will vary based on the regional cost to do business and regional cost of labor, the size of your lawn, and any additional services you may desire such as edging or mulching. The national average for lawn mowing costs is $30-$50. Pros may charge an hourly rate, a flat rate or by the square foot (an acre contains 43,560 square feet). Square footage rates factor in the professional’s time, the use of their equipment, and the gas to operate the mower. Distance may also affect cost: If you live outside the company’s standard service range, you may pay an additional travel fee. Here are some examples of average prices for mowing and lawn maintenance:

  • Up to 8,000-square-foot property: $30 per week/$120 per month.
    • Bimonthly: $40 per service/$80 per month.
    • One time only: $45 per service.
      • Prices include mowing all turf grass areas; trimming grass away from fences, structures, trees, and lawn edges; and clearing or blowing all grass trimmings from driveways, sidewalks, curbs, etc.
  • Hourly rate: $25 per hour (including travel, equipment costs and labor).
  • Lot size:
    • Smaller lots in subdivisions: $35.
    • Half-acre lot: $50.
    • One-acre lot: $100.
