Working with Sabina Islam was a great experience for me as she not only displayed high professionalism, but it was obvious she cared about my website and its success by the amount of work and detail she put it into it. From the start, she was upfront with the complexity and the costs involved. Because this was not an easy project, she first had to put a lot of thought into it by putting together a technical documentation based on my needs with a timeline of milestones and deliverables. She communicated the progress well by answering all of my questions on an item-by-item basis, continually kept me updated with lengthy phone calls and detailed emails. Her team went above and beyond by putting together an algorithm for my doubles tennis league that automated member registration, pairing up of doubles teams, submission of match results, generating a season standing, and depositing it all in a history page of all matches played by each member. I told her my vision and she put all the moving parts together in a cohesive, user friendly website that members will keep going back to again and again. Her team even provide me an instructional video of how to manage the website as the administrator and has guaranteed me support for a full month after the project’s completion. My website ( - San Diego Junior Doubles League) is now something I can be proud to show to my members and future sponsors. I will definitely go back to her for my next project! Highly recommended.

I don't even know where to begin in telling you just how highly I recommend Tracy. As a first time author, it was a bit daunting to interview editors and select one. But I had 5 key-words in mind regarding how I wanted to feel while working with an editor, and when I spoke to Tracy, she fit them all. Those words were: Wisdom, Trust, Support, Joy, and Ease. So I hired her for a developmental edit, and I am so happy I did. In addition to being a skilled editor (and writer), I was impressed by her availability and her willingness to answer my ridiculously long list of questions that I sent over along with my manuscript! Tracy not only did the job I hired her to do in terms of a developmental edit, but she also helped me believe in myself as a writer and provided some major hand-holding during some stressful times in this process. Speaking of the stresses, I had already hired another editor for the copy/line edit, but I ended up going back to Tracy for that as well! I really wanted someone who would make my "already good" writing even *better*. And Tracy did just that. It was just a pleasure to work with her, and there were many times that her answers to my questions made me laugh or her line edits made me cry (because they were so good!). I feel much more confident about putting my first book, "The Multi-Orgasmic Diet," out into the world now, thanks to Tracy's beautiful edits and helpful guidance! So if you want someone with experience, skill, attention to detail, and who will truly care about your finished product, I highly recommend Tracy Teel.

My literature degree has, for over a decade, exposed me to varied genres and content. This diversity has trained me to to work quickly and efficiently on every project while keeping in mind the voice and wishes of every client. I was recently tasked with editing a Ph.D. candidate's essay for an academic journal. The work was turned in earlier than the allotted time I was given and my client was more than satisfied. He was kind enough to give me credit in his by-line upon presentation of his essay to the journal. I believe my genuine interest in his project and the open line of communication I established early on with him made for a positive and swiftly resolved interaction. My is broad-ranged. I have edited personal depositions for two legal custody hearings, multiple product descriptions, and numerous forms of business correspondence. I pride myself in my responsiveness and my flexibility in writing. I have the ability to adjust my style in keeping with the desired voice of the client.

By virtue of my formal education as a writer and having worked at the Los Angeles Times as a writer and started a monthly magazine for McGraw-Hill, where I was the editor, I am able to quickly and thoroughly present all critical and compelling information to provide readers with an engaging experience. Sounds easy, but is not and most other writers or editors cannot do it time and time again.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

      • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
      • Strong writing skills.
      • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
      • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
      • Expertise in your target area.
      • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

      • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
      • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
      • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
      • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
